Chieftom35,
Please follow these steps for assistance:
Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.
Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
Note: If the "Resolve" button on the Windows tab is NOT grayed out, that means the Utility found problems with your installation of Windows that it may be able to repair on its own. Please click the "Resolve" button and follow any displayed instructions.

Hi Chieftom,
I may be wrong, but I beleive that if you have an Validation number, that you need to Activate Windows, not install an ActiveX.
If you cannot successfully activate via the internet, then choose the alternative option to "activate by phone".
How to activate Windows XP by phone:
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:
1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
Or,
click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
Or,
clicking Start button, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then press the Enter key located on your keyboard.2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".How to activate Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890/en-us
Or, If you do, in fact, need to install the active X control, please try going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ click the "Start Diagnostic" button. the site will look at your system and see if there is any problems with the settings.(i.e. activeX not installed, activeX not allowed to install, Windows not activated, any Cryptography errors...so on. If any errors are found, click the "Resolve Now" button. The site will try to fix the issue by itself, but if it can not, it will provide steps for you to resolve the issue.
Thank you,
Darin Smith
