Locked Product Key Update tool for XP media center

Does anyone know when Microsoft are planning to release a version of the product key update tool for XP media centre edition?

Surely a corporation the size of Microsoft should have the resources to release versions of this software for the whole family of XP operating systems simultaneously.

By this oversight do I take it that as a user of XP Media Center I am considered a second class customer?

As a customer of Microsoft who has purchased genuine software I feel let down by this oversight. I think my next media centre purchase will be a Mac as clearly by this lack of support for XP Media Centre customers, Microsoft do not consider themselves serious players in this market segment.

    Neilos,

Windows XP Media Center Edition has never been sold directly to the public by MS.  All MCE copies are OEM copies, and as with all OEM software, the OEM has the responsibility to you for support.

that's not quiet right. everyone can go to his local pc dealer and buy the MCE System Builder Package. So MCE is freely available to the public. so why not provide the same tool for MCE? especially because MCE is widely the same as XP Prof.

    Omikron99,

That's right, you can go to a PC Dealer, the OEM, and buy an OEM license for MCE.  You are not buying it at retail from MS, as you would be if you went to a major merchant (Best Buy, Fry's, Circuit City, etc) and bought a retail copy of XP Home or Pro off the shelf.

MCE is hardware dependent - and has various driver and hardware requirements that we cannot account for in a small utility such as the PKUT (Product Key Update Tool).

In addition, the MCE is only availible as OEM/System Builder and is designed to be sold with a new PC, much like XP Tablet Edition.

I had a hard disk failure and I took my media center pc into a repair shop to get fixed. they re-installed windows and put in a product key that does not match the one on the case of the PC. Now my pc fails the WGA test and the product update key doesnt work with MCE. The repairer has since disappeared.

    What can I do???????

    Neilos,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

    Dirnus,

I am sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is with Windows XP Professional and why it is not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install the operating system is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VL editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and versions of MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you MAY be  seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of Windows XP Pro is an unauthorized installation. In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation of the operating system to alleviate any complications which may arise from the non-genuine status of your system. As a customer there are options available to you for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine.  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.
First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the blocked PID status. Demand they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy which was originally paid for. Curious was your computer turned in for repairs/upgrades and was the hard drive reformatted?   In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation to alleviate any complications.

Again, I am sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation or reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Hello Kinfolk,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Yes you definetely need to take your system along with all your original Dell software back to the repair store. In turn explain what has happened and request they restore your system with your original software.  Please read the enclosed information as it will provide you with valuable information.  Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. Unfortunately, the product key used to install both your operating system and Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers.          This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer.  You will need to uninstall Office before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are available options you may choose for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. ButterflyAva,

Thank you for providing the information. Curious after you ran the diagnostic test were you able to copy and past the diagnostic results as Dan indicated? We really need to have the results so we may analyze your current situation. In turn we can formulate a resolve and post back. You mentioned a 299 error code. This is an issue with yoru XML services on the computer.  If you compare your Diagnostic Report to others on the forum, you will notice that yours is missing a bunch of text below the "Office Details" line. Please run the diagnostic test following the steps Dan provided and you can see what I am mentioning. We commonly refer to this area as the XML blob. This is caused by a missing Registry Key.

I will provide you the steps to resolve this XML issue.

     Fix (Part 1):

    1) Click “Start” button, then “Run”
    2) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll  <Click OK>
(Note: This will register the msxml3.dll and the registry entry ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSXML.DOMDocument’ will be generated)
If this does not work, the msxml3.dll may be missing or corrupt. Follow the below Fix (Part 2), in that case:

     Fix (Part 2):

    1) Go to the Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7) download page at:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28494391-052b-42ff-9674-f752bdca9582&DisplayLang=en
    2) From the files available, download “msxml3.msi”
    3) Double click the file and follow the steps to install.
    4) Click “Start” button, then “Run...”
    5) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll  <Click OK>

Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk prior making any changes in the registry. You should be okay because the files are being registried and no changes but still a good idea to ensure any critical data is saved. Please let us know if the above steps resolved your issues. Have a great weekend.

I dont know what was going on. I did forget to post the diagnostics and I am sorry. I also probably didnt copy the part I am missing in what I posted. As I said I dont know what the problem was, it came suddenly yesterday and today it's gone. The non valadation thing was in my task bar and it came up when I turned the computer on and asked me to verify again. This time it did it verify like it always has when I download from the MS website. I am at a loss to explain what happened unless when I ran that program you have to check whats wrong and I clicked resolve now, I needed to reboot and that was all. Thank you for the help. I was kind of freaking out when I saw staff members say Best Buy does not sell the sony vaio media center edition. I bought mine there in 2004. I guess they meant they dont sell it anymore. Anyway, thanks again for the rapid response and the help

From what I've read I think I may be screwed Smile   I bought my laptop about 9 months ago from a Fry's out in Seattle. All was fine and dandy till I picked up a bug. I tried the system restore but noticed it was only letting me restore to the same day....every day. After spending a couple hundred dollars on the internet fix it's to no avail I decided to reformat using the "recovery console". That hung up on the first run, second run........AAHAA, but I did burn off a set of recovery disks when I first got the PC.....I put those in, and wouldn't you know........not for the right computer....go figure. Well, it's a good thing a still had my copy of Windows XP from the puter I junked a couple years back. I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Home Edition and now get an Incorrect Product Key when I try to activate it. I've done the phone thing and they give me a different number to call everytime I call. Microsoft says it's a vendor problem, the vendor says it's a Microsoft problem. Refurbished piece of counterfeited poo. So:

    1. The freshly installed OS is XP Home, the COA on the PC says XP Media Center Edition 2005.
    2. It doesn't have OEM anything on it. Says Microsoft and has the www.microsoft.com/piracy/howtotell URL, also it has a part of the sticker that's been rubbed down and you can see the GENUINE strip coming through.

So now I'm wondering if I buy ANOTHER Windows XP disk whether or not I'll be up the same crick without a paddle. Here is the log:

Hi Dan (sorry for my english but I am Italian), I have the same problem:

I bought a Pc Packard Bell with WINDOWS XP MEDIA CENTER EDITION 2005 PACKARD BELL preinstalled (with the COA on the machine).

I had a virus and i decided to format the pc and reinstall the operator system. I don't have

the Cd of Windows XP MCE but i had only the Recovery Utility in a hide partition (i

formatted all the disk). So, i decided to reinstall the o.s. with a cd of my friend, but

when during the installation asked me the product key, i tried to insert my original product

key but was not accepted; so i insert the product key of my friend and the installation

continued. After, I want to activate my copy of Windows in internet changing the product key

with my original, but was not accepted again.
    Can you help me, please?
I have the COA on the machine with this information:
WINDOWS XP MEDIA CENTER EDITION 2005
    PACKARD BELL
(other numbers if you want tell me)
This are the information about the software you indicated:

    Courtney B,

As you have seen, an installation of XP Home will not accept a Product Key from XP Media Center.

Your best option is to contact HP to order a set of Recovery CDs for your HP laptop.  Please follow this link:  https://warp2.external.hp.com/driver/dr_country_select.asp?Product=419038-001&lang=en&cc=us

    Good Luck!

    Onelovekir,

Your best option is to contat Dell and order a replacement Operating System Reinstallation CD.  Dell OS CDs are usually very reasonably priced, normally less than $15 USD.

    Good Luck!

    Fabiodnc,

Your situation is exactly like Boki5's in this thread:  http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2168603&SiteID=25

In your case, if you have not mistakenly repartitioned the disk and wiped out the Recovery Partition supplied by Packard Bell, my first choice would be to have you try to run a destuctive recovery from the Recovery Partition.  You will want to visit the support pages at the Packard bell support website for your exact model of Packard Bell in order to learn how to do this.

If for some reason the above suggestion does not work or you have erased the recovery partition, your next best choice would be to contact Packard Bell to request a set of Recovery CDs for your model.

If Packard Bell cannot supply the CDs, then your next best choice would be to borrow the genuine systembuilder/OEM CDs for XP Media Center from a friend, or ask a local computer shop to make copies for you--accept only copies made from the genuine hologrammed CDs (there are two CDs for XP Media Center).  You can use the genuine systembuilder/OEM CDs to install MCE onto your computer using the Product Key on the CoA.  Once installed, you will only be able to activate by using the Telephonic Activation in the Activation Wizard.

    Good Luck!

    Hey Courtney,

Sounds like you have not had a very good experience and we are sorry to hear about this. You have attempted many efforts as well as done your homework. First have you taken the Pavilion dv8000 computer back to Seattle Frys and explained your experiences as a customer?  This would be a great starting point. As far as installing the older XP this may or may not work depending on the licensing version. Right now I think your best solution is contacting HP technicial support. In turn explain all the details such as the recovery media you made didn't work. Request them to provide you with the proper reinstallation recovery media software for your particular model. Below I have provided some contact information for HP.  Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity. Take care Courtney and hopefully the information will point you in the right direction for an expediate resolve.

    OK, where do I start,

Download a program called bspayer and installed it. Caused wndows to show active desktop picture and no icons, no toolbar nothing, mouse moved around but right clicking did nothing.

Followed a number of forum pages to see if I could fix it to no avail, as a last resort formated the hard drive, no documentation from NEC about whether or not XP OEM  MCE was in a hidden partition or not, disk only had drivers for sound, video etc.

Anyway friend formated and reinstalled windows and bam, WGA failed, no assistance from microsoft website so far, hoping this windows forum can help. I have downloaded ran and copied info you suggested, see below

    Hello Russell,

Thank you for running the MGA diagnostic test and providing the results for us to analyze. Your question is off topic. The purpose of this forum is the support of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program but I would like to provide you with some information after reading the Diagnostic results and reading your post.

I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. The product key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a  key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA). You will find numerous sites where this key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the last 15 digits of the product key:  9MT6X-PGKC8-J4JTM.

Russell you mentioned downloading a program called bspayer. I would highly recommend not using this site.      Under NO circumstances should you try to download an ISO image for software from a P2P file sharing site, or use a second-hand burned copy of an XP CDROM.  These have been shown to be full of root kits, malware, viruses and who knows what else---you'd be worse off than you are now.

Why would you take the risk of using one of those?  Research has shown that about half of the copies of  software available on P2P download sites are infected with root kits, spyware, Trojans, and who knows what else.

Your best course of action is to contact NEC technical support. Inquire what the cost is for a recovery/restoration media disc and order the appropriate recovery media for your model number. This disc will restore your computer back to factory settings. There are other options available also such as purchasing software directly from Microsoft @ http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/ . Also please research the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) for all the correct usage agreements. If you have any questions please contact me.

    Thank you,

    Stephen Holm, MS

    Thankyou for your quick reply,

I do have a authentic COA and therefor should not need to purchase anything at all, the recovery disk that came with the computer has apps and drivers but none are anything like WinXP OEM or anything like that. I understand I also have Windowws XP MCE 2005, which again was my origianl OS anyway, so why doesnt windows get off thier you know what a make a keytool for about 60% of end users and stop just catering for the corperate world. This is why alot of people in the know are opting for other forms of OS like OS2.

I seen no reason why Microsoft cannot make and have available a keytool. I have as I said and authentic only used once ( by me ) code that I can use again. The COA number in on the side panel of the tower, it is a NEC powermate m9002c.

I welcome your other suggestions, short of paying for anything.

    thankyou

    Wizard,

You’re welcome for the quick response.  Right now the MGA diagnostic results indicate you have an invalid product key.  Windows Media Center is an OEM licensing program. You mentioned the NEC disc you have only has drivers for sound video etc.  Please I recommend you visit NEC's technical support site located here:  http://www.nec-computers.com/page.asp?id=158  and request recovery software for you particular model system. I am not aware if NEC places restoration points on their systems or not. Unfortunately this would not provide you any help because as you indicated the system has been reformatted. Some manufactures do place restorations points on their systems and some provide users with recovery software media. Also it is each manufacturer's program how they disseminate information as well as provide guidance to customers for backing up the restore point. Each customer would then be responsible to make their image based on the manufacturer's guidance.

Wizard, the scope of this forum is for Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA).  The forum can't provide support for non-Microsoft software customer’s install on their systems. Also should you visit the forum for a non WGA question about Microsoft software we would try to re-direct you for help. Again I would recommend for you to please visit the following link and post your question:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter .  Please post questions if you have questions about Media Center that is non-WGA related.

Previously mentioned you downloaded a program called bspayer then installed it. As previously explained I would highly recommend not using this program. Under NO circumstances should you try to download software from a P2P file sharing site.  As I explained these sites have been known to be full of root kits, malware, viruses and who knows what else---you'd be worse off than you are now. Curious did you only download the program called bspayer and start to experience problems? Or did you download a program within the site and then start experiencing problems? Thank you and I hope the information provided in my two previous posts will provide you with guidance.

Yes, and when you call OEM, as for me "Best Buy", I get some tech geek who makes $5/hr and hates his job who gives me a number to microsoft that lands me in Malaysia on the phone for 4 HOURS with a sweet young lady who doesn't understand a word I'm saying...after all was said and done, I was provided with a Product Code that did not work. When I called her back, she referred me back to "Best Buy". They did nothing to help me. I paid $3,000 for this computer in 12/2004, not counting the extra $500 for Office software. When my PC crashed, "Best Buy" did give me FINALLY a product key for XP but would not give me one for Office stating it was on a yellow sticker on the back of the CD case. Yeah, well, they installed my software and when they ripped the celophane it ripped the last 5 digits of the Office product key along with it. After 2 months of going back and forth between best buy and malaysia, I am screwed. I home school my kids, run a small home based business, had a complete computer crash and now can't use the office products to support my children's cirriculum. I have works and it works, but it sucks and I feel very very cheated and disappointed. Or couldn't ya tell... Sorry to vent on Thanksgiving...I've been looking over the website again for the last 4 hours trying to see if anyone else has had this happen...I had given up but my grandmother is dying as we speak and I needed to distract myself with something stupid so I don't have to feel the real stuff right now...it's not working. now i'm just broken hearted, pissed off and still without resources to educate my kids...

anyone have any ideas? literally...i have the Office cd case, the cd, the small booklet insert, and the F'd Up yellow sticker with all but the last 5 digits of my product code....come on...make me thankful today Smile anyone???? Thank you, sorry to vent...

    Hello Renewed,

Periodically Microsoft customers have misplaced discs of a purchased program and inquire about replacements.  Please review the following Knowledge Base (KB) article, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/326246, “How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and product upgrades, or replace product manuals.

If your XP Pro CD was a system builder/OEM CD, request a replacement from your system builder.  If they cannot help, order a replacement from Microsoft:

    Hi,

We are a system builder and small shop, we repair people computers. We often get machines with Media Center license on it and we are unable to put their own original keys on to them, like we do for XP PRO, HOME and Vista machines. What is advised in this case? How we can do a better job by not installing VLK on to that machines.

    Help is greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Talkways

    Talkways,

When customers bring MCE computers to you for repair, here are your options:

    1.  If from a major manufacturer, before the customer leaves the store after dropping off, call up major manufacturer and have customer place an order for the MCE recovery CDs/DVDs from that manufacturer, or have customers go home and bring back the media that shipped with the computer.

When the customer brings you the recovery CDs/DVDs, make copies and keep on file for the next customer with that particular brand of computer.

    2.  If a systembuilder/OEM license and not from major manufacturer, then BUY a systembuilder/OEM license kit for MCE from your distributor and use those CDs and the PK on the customer computer's MCE CoA  to do the installation of MCE.

Still no way to change product key? I recently reinstalled win MCE from a SP3 cd so I wouldn't have to do the miljon updates after reinstalling. However I couldn't use my legit product key when installing. Also contacting OEM privider Fujutsi siemens is totaly worthless since all they say is reinstall from provided cd which really sucks since it's a real pain reinstalling and doing all the updates.

Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

Yeah I really feel like WGA is helping me right now, seems to be alot less problem if I would have installed a pirated XP sp3 than trying to be legit and use MCE and my own product key.  Because I'm simply not installing a 3-4 year old version of windows.

I recently started having problems with my Dell Media Center PC - the genuine windows validation tool won't work anymore and now my media center extender won't connect.  It has worked just fine for years.  Seems like the problem started after I updated to SP3?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Changing product key hopefully.
Begin by opening the Registry and navigating to (Start, run, cmd)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click the ODBETimer binary value and select Modify. Change at least one character of this value to either a number from 0 to 9 or to a letter from A to F, then click OK and close the Registry Editor. This makes the current product key invalid.

Now, reactivate Windows using your new product key. Click Start , Run and enter the command:

    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a

At this point, Windows will launch the Product Activation Wizard so that you can put in your new product key.

oddly enough, the WIndows Media Center is NOT available as a Retail purchase. I'm afraid you've been a victim of software counterfeiting.

I would suggest returning the PC back to the reseller.

This is not true. You can purchase MS XP MCE right now from TigerDirect, Infotel, and CompUSA (Yes, I know they are all the same company).

Please help, a friend took his computer to a place for repair (motherboard), they must have reinstalled the OS also... they didn't install the drivers, so I have done this, however, windows will not validate.

Please see below. The computer is a Gateway, but does not have a product key sticker anywhere on the case.

Please help, a friend took his computer to a place for repair (motherboard), they must have reinstalled the OS also... they didn't install the drivers, so I have done this, however, windows will not validate.

Please see below. The computer is a Gateway, but does not have a product key sticker anywhere on the case.

The case maybe a Gateway - but the motherboard is a Retail one, and as such the chances are that the installation is using a hacker's Loader program to try and fool the OS into thinking it's on a valid board.
The original OS license was tied to the motherboard - and is no longer valid (since you say that the motherboard was replaced out of warranty).
Your friend will have to purchase a new Windows License.

    Hello securegamer

To fix this the easy way,

is to go to the manufacture web side

and download the manufacturer up-dated BIOS

for the new (same is original OEM MoBo Same part number but made by Intel) ...

Example: Gateway  D845 motherboard was manufactured by Intel

YOU need a Gateway BIOS instead of Intel ... than your window is valid.

Ask some one that works with computers on daily bases to assist you with this.

Do not load a wrong BIOS!!! It will kill your MoBo!!!

I don't know if I'll have time to help you... My e-mail is  soroka69(at)hotmail.com

do NOT attempt to flash the BIOS with anything other than the manufacturer's proper flash - or you WILL end up with a very expensive doorstop,
You CANNOT put a Gateway BIOS into a retail motherboard.
