XP SP2 won't install. Genuine Advantage passes no problem

Hi, I have tried installing XP SP2 many times and it's getting stuck at the same point every time. Cannot find a direct hit searching for tips so decided to post. My computer passes the Validate Windows check on the Genuine Advantage site so that's not the problem. But it looks like SP2 doesn't like something about my Product key...

1. The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard screen displays and it starts fine. But looks to lock/freeze at the same step. I have screen shots if needed, but basically the step is 'Inspecting your current configuration' and the details say 'Checking product key'. So, that's why I'm here at this forum as it seems to be something Genuine Advantage related.

Please advise if anyone can assist and/or point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Have you validated your Windows Operating system? Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the "Validate Windows" button located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. Follow the instructions provided after you click on this button. Next restart your computer once you have completed the Windows Validation process. Now please try updating Windows. Was the updating process successful or did you receive any error codes or messaging reflecting Windows Updating problems?

Please run the Windows Diagnostic Tool. This tool will provide detailed information which will allow us to analyze any possible problems you may be experiencing. Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

You may also consider self help options detailed below. This forum specializes with WU problems.

Have found a way around this problem copy and past the red text into notepad and save it to your desktop as sp2 fix.bat ( then open it. a black window will come up, it will ask to delete a file, hit the y key and push enter. reboot your computer and keep pushing F8. you need to enter in safe mode and then you can install sp2! )
