    After a PC crash I reinstalled Money 2005 .  Version 14.0.120.1105 is running.  Windows XP

    When attempting to restore from backup, I am prompted to enter my Microsoft Passport sign in name and password in order to open the file.

    However, I have never used a Microsoft passport to backup or open a Money file, so I am unable to open it.

    2005 had an odd update which after 1/1/11 you will not be able to access again. Use google and search for creating a 2005 update disc. Try creating a new empty file and letting all updates run. Then try to open your file again. Can you sign in offline?
