Windows 7 within a Domain (WIndows Server 2003 R2 - note all updates applied to 11/23/2009

I just bought and installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit and I'm less then thrilled with internet related throughput and response time. I suspect that I'm timing out on certain sites I attempt to access. The basic question that anyone will ask is whether file and printer sharing and network discovery is turned on.

I'm using a quad core 2.83 GHZ processor. FSB >1066, 8 GB of RAM with IE 8 (and/or Firefox 3.55). The client is connected to a Netgear Gigabit smart switch, which is connected to a domain controller with the xeon dual core processor (1.8666GHZ) and 4GB of RAM. The cabling is all CAT 5e and the router is a Cisco Small Business 1GBS (RVS4400). The modem is a Motorola Surfboard type.

Now this is the only box that I'm having internet performance issues with. The XP and linux boxes are fine. Within the box, windows 7 is fine, no performance issues at all.

Has anyone noticed degraded internet performance with windows 7 coupled with IE 8?

cannot install one care on windows7

I have one care installed on my 2 other comps with vista using 2 license. I want to use the 3rd license on onother comp with win 7 and get a compatability issue. Is there a fix for this prob? I suppose an add on is necessary for this to work??

Hi all, I am having trouble with my headset. When I plug it in everthing is channelled to my headset but because its of poor quality I only want voice chat to go through my headset and everything else such as all game sounds or music to go through my speakers. Is this an XP setting or something else? I have a seperate sound card too.

Will Windows 7 work on my laptop with the following specification?

Well I have HP Dv5000 system with Genuine Intel CPU / T2050 1.60 Centrino Duo, 2 GB of RAM and 256MB of NVidia GeForce And oh yes, it is 32-Bit Processor.
Well I am really looking forward to installing and trying out Windows 7. Currently I have Windows XP running. So if I could get an answer to that, then I will think about getting my hands on Windows 7.

I am looking to buy a no-frills 4G MP3 player in the $50 range. I have yet to find a player that states in its specs that it is compatible with the Windows 7 OS. Can anyone direct me to one? Thanks.

Hi guys, here is the problem,i am using windoxs XP,and i had deleted direct x folder in the registry since finding no way to uninstall the direct x. then i thougt that after reboot windows will reinstall the original direct x 8.1. but it never happen. and i think it might the reason i can't install any type of direct x. No matter how many time i had try...it still dispoint me.

After deleted the registry value, then i reboot. and i did install direct x 8.1 manually after windows din't reinstall it, and it doesn't show any problem during and after the installation. when i check the registry, there is a directx folder. and i though every thing is gonna be just fine, and when i check my directx using DXdiag, it show "directx version no found". And when i install any of the latest directx like 9.0c, 10 all show the same erro,

WIndows Live OneCare is being discontinued?????? What's with this.

I just recieved a notice that Windows LiveOneCare is being discontinued in late 2010 --- will this affect the operation of my systems it is monitoring? Will it just keep on doing what it does with my networking of three computers and two printers or am I back to square one.

I am also worried that if I delete it in late 2010 that it will leave me with no protection. GOOD ole Microsoft does it again. LOL

I "accidently" erased DirectX in the registry while trying to fix an issue with playing video on my pc (Screen would flicker and only sound would play) and when I tried to reinstall DX 9 I get "An internal system error occured// Please refer to DXerror.log and Directx.log...". I am new to these forums and stuff both I will add whatever I can. PLEASE HELP!

I was just wondering if there was going to be any way to hook 1-4 tunercards SDTV/HDTV to the WHS pc to stream live cable-tv over the home network? I think that this would be a great opertunity to have a central "box" that does all that WHS does plus streams Media, becomes a DVR, and more. Then all you should need is a Media center pc, media extender possibly with HDMI. I'm thinking of saving power consumption rather than build a seperate "box" next to the WHS just for a media server/dvr/NAS ect...

I am hoping I am in the correct forum; however if I am not please direct me. I had a PIII in my closet for a couple years and my son wanted to hook it up to his big TV for games. I hooked it up and it froze at the desktop. Tried last known.. and still froze in the same place. Two time I tried the Windows/Repair and also froze. Three times I did a fresh install and froze one windows was installed and did its reboot. Any suggestions!

Batch File For/If Loop problem

Alright, so I like to think I'm good with batch, but inevitably I miss something really silly and end up scratching my head for days. I've asked a lot of people that I work with, and no one seems to have an answer aside from "Well, don't use batch use (insert scripting language that I don't know here)". While I'm working on learning other languages, I'm still a big fan of batch, and it's what I've used for years. Anyway, to my problem...

There is a specific application installed throughout our domain on random computers which needs to go away. The easiest way I can see to do this is to have a batch file called from the startup scripts that checks the machine for the files, and if it finds them, it kills them. Here's what I've got...

Now then, here's the various problems that I've run into.

If I put the IF loop outside of the For loop so that %%i is updated each time for use in the DWRPATH variable. When I do that, %%i never truly gets updated, even if I try to use an increment variable counter to know how many times I've been through the loops, because it thinks each execution of the For loop is the first execution (which logically it is).

I can't pass a wildcard to the If statement to try and match the file path, hence the need for the variable DWRPATH, and parsing only the last x characters of the string given by the data file for the compare statement.

With the If statement embedded WITHIN the For Loop, %%i never actually gets updated. Here's the kicker. If DWRPATH has a value BEFORE the loop begins (i.e. after i've run the batch file, but didn't clean up the variables, or just set the variable beforehand for testing) then the IF statements work fine (in that the variable is present, and gets compared). If DWRPATH does **NOT** have a value prior to the batch file being run, the If statement doesn't work at all. It doesn't like me trying to parse a variable that doesn't exist (13 was unexpected at this time.)

If I embed the If loop outside of the For loop sure the variable gets updated, but by the time the If Loop gets to it, it's the final line of the file and no good. Or, I goto the If loop from within the for loop (i.e. Goto Loop2), and the file just loops infinitely because the For loop only ever grabs the first line of the text file.

Also, I tried it with SetLocal EnableDelayedExtensions but the If statements choke on the ! in place of %.

I think I'm out of tricks at this point. Hoping someone more skilled in the ways of the almighty batch file might have some insight.

Having used Windows products since Win95, I've had various ups and downs using them. But I've about had it........ I'm tired of the constant problems that keep cropping up and the lackluster Microsoft responses to fix them. I've been using the Win7 Beta since they've released on one of my home systems and had actually bought the release thinking the nit-pick problems had been fixed on the final version.

First problem- Hard drives- I can't say if this is a system wide problem, but it is an oddity that I've noticed. I ran a 1TB WD in the system before installing the Win7 Beta for about a year with no problems. After installing the beta; then the release, and then the final, all 3 kept on coming up with data errors on the drive. To be sure of the fact (since the drive could of been going bad), I pulled it out and tested it on a linux system and a WinXP Pro system. Result, no problems detected. I tested it using the WD program, and 3 other hard drive testing programs. I reinstalled it back into the system and came up with the data problems again (on the release version of Win7 UL.) I disassembled the system installing new cables and also used another drive with linux installed to stress test the MB. No problems detected. But re-installing the drive with Win 7 came up with data errors again. I installed it on 3 other drives that I had bought at the same time of the same type, and 3 out of the 4 drives had the same problems with win7 but ran fine with other operating systems installed and all passed the WD checks and other HD checking programs. If the drives passed the manufacturers program checks and also passed 3 seperate companies checks, but fails the Win7 checks, then something may be wrong with Win 7's self checks. Also of note, if I used a 750gb or smaller drive (300gb Velociraptor, 200gb Seagate, 500gb Maxtor, 200gb WD, 750gb WD, 500gb WD) I didn't have the same problem. I even went back to a 12 year old 50gb drive that passed on Win 7. Right now, I installed Linux on that first drive and have run checks on it daily (the WD program and 1 of the other disk check programs at random) and the data error problem still hasn't popped up (in 2 weeks.) I took Win 7 and its serial number and placed it into storage. I may pull it out in the future, but at the moment its staying off of any of my systems. Had a co-worker who repairs computers for the company I work for who tried Win7 as well from the Beta stage as well and noticed the problem with large capacity drives (as the primary) as well (but his were 1.5 and 2tb.), but no problems with lower capacity HD's.

Video Card- This ones a bit tougher to place blame on. The 2 drivers I can use is the Windows generic and the manufacturers. The generic one has better features (video sizes and refresh rates), but has constant errors that freezes the system. The manufacturers has a little less on features (refresh rates and video sizes,) but Win7 views it as an outdated driver (even if its newer) and wants to replace it with every update. This is the second reason why I put Win7 in storage. I tried using the Win7 generic driver with the refresh rates and screen sizes that come with the manufacturers program/driver (I was thinking that the generic had incompatible settings in it,) but I still had the screen freezes. With the manufacturers driver I had 1 freeze in 3 weeks, and the generic I had 8+ in 2 days of using it.

IE8- This is one of the things I almost never use, but I at least had to give it a shot. And I was disappointed. I ran IE8 with only Java and Microsoft Silverlight installed, and it was very choosy on if it wanted to work or not. Even when going to MSN.com, it didn't always want to work and came up with "loaded with errors" (I can't remember the exact error wording that pops up on the bottom of the screen) where the links of the pictures/ads wouldn't work. Sometimes a refresh would get it to work, but not all the time. The next items is with the tabs. If you right click on a link on a page (I'll use MSNBC as an example) and open it in a new tab, it doesn't always load. It will sit there with the connecting notice up, but won't go past that point. Opening up another tab, and pasting the address into the new tab works most of the time to correct the problem, but not all the time. An update that came out in pre-release for Win7 lessened the chance of it happening, but if I went to the MSNBC and click on 5 stories that I want to read using right click->open in new tab at least 1 tab will freeze.

Media Player and Media Center- Biggest waste of time that I had. I can get smaller programs with more features that use less resources, yet get more out of them. Media Player doesn't have half the features of free media programs, and yet uses more resources. Media Center is a joke with longer loading times, over bloated with items that I will never use (and can't remove them easily without getting a BSD if at all), lame internet video content, a picture organizing/side show that takes too many steps to implement every time, and an organizational system that would get me fired for incompetence if I tried to implement it at my company. It was a good attempt to try to get things organized into one area, but it seems to have lost direction between planning and programming/implementation.

Live Mail- I use this on my Winxp systems (Home and Pro) to keep my work mail, ISP e-mails, and free email in one spot. I considered it since I only use office on one of my home systems and didn't want to pay to place the email program on what would of been my other 2 Windows systems (my XP home system and what would of been my Win7 system.) I installed it on the Win7 Beta when I first installed it, and suffered through the non-closing error that many others have written about. Since the pre-release came out, the error has occurred less and less, but still hits me at odd times.

Program Compatibility- This I actually have praises for. When it works, it does the job perfectly. I've run 1993+ MS-Dos games with no problems, but sometimes it can get real fussy. One day, I can play a game with no problems loading or playing; and on the next, it will take several loads or restarts to run the same game. When it works, it runs great.... But sometimes it litereraly gets a bug up it's nether-section. Games and work programs I have run with it run from MS-Dos to WinXP.

Removable devices- This has a some tweaking that needs to be done. I've had devices that are read as the wrong item, windows can't find the drivers even when they are pointed out to it (Win7 or Vista drivers depending on the item), or continually read as being there even when they are disconnected. During the time of using the Beta, pre-release, and the release versions, I found it was easier to just disconnect the item without going through remove devices and ended up with less errors and problems. I've had the problems with Crowen, Ipod, Creative, memory cards, digital video camera, USB headsets, thumb drives, and wireless printers. One of the most annoying items that kept coming up when I had Win7 installed was the fact that it kept on saying I had a 3 1/2 floppy on a computer where the board doesn't even have a floppy connector. I never did find out what it considered my floppy even when I disconnected the DVD drives, all but 1 HD, and nothing but the keyboard/mouse connected to the computer (I even disconnected the card reader USB and Sata connections).

Win Explorer- This is another reason why I pulled Win 7 off my system. Unexplained system freezes with no errors, info, or messages coming up in the logs; programs (new and old) freezing when closed or opened (not on screen and not freezing the computer, but in the task manager showing it not responding before finally closing out.) I had MOH: Airborne freeze in the taskmanager for almost 10 mins one time after I closed it out (the cooling fan had kicked in to a higher setting making me curious so I opened up the task manager to see what was using (and heating up) the CPU.) A little bit of a delay is to be expected when closing out some of the more memory and cpu/video intensive games, but on a hunch I kept task manager up for a day and on Spider Solitare it took 3 mins to finally close out. It doesn't happen every time, and doesn't happen the same way with every game; but sometimes it gets an urge to not close something down properly.

I don't mean to sound like I'm whining and moaning (going over what I wrote, it seems that way even to me,) but it just seems to me that the bigger OS with the extra bells and whistles isn't working and start out with more problems and bugs then ever. I pre-bought the release when it was offered to me a couple of months ago, and actually received it within a day or so of its release (I was on vacation during that time and didn't install it until a few days later.) I expected better of the final version since I didn't expect them to release any updates for the the pre-release. I was sorely disappointed. Is it better then Vista when it came out? Yes, it is. Is it more user friendly? Yes. Is it better looking? Debatable, but it depends on your tastes (to me its a cleaner interface which I like.) It's just the problems that have turned me off. It has less problems then Vista, but the problems I've had has made me decide to keep with the OS's I have installed on my systems and present. So the disk and serial number have been placed into my un-used program box and I'll probably pull it out in a few months to see if it has improved. I'll stick with my XP's and Linux systems for now.

Windows 7 RC1 - Audio not working

Hi,

I have tried installing Realtek AC97 audio and HD Audio for Windows 7. The installation seems to complete, however for example, the control panel for the Realtek software is not displayed in the control panel. I have on board sound (no additional sound card). I have also tried installing the nVidia chipset drivers for 680i SLI and GeForce 8800 GPU (still audio doesnt work). Also in the playback devices, I have disabled Digital Audio S/PDIF (because it wasn't working) but also I have noticed that the Speakers are not plugged in. I have checked that the speakers green jack is plugged in at the back and is powered. And I know they work because they work on XP (on a dual boot)

Nvidia 680i SLI
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GPU

If any body is able to help of shed some light in what I am doing incorrectly, it would be greatly appreciated.

Internet explorer Script error 1514 when using AT & T Self Support Tool

Hi,

My Internet provider is AT& T. My old modem died so I got a new one. I have Interent Explorer 6 on Windows XP Home. Up to the switch of the new Modem, I was able to use the AT & T Self Support Tool with no problems. When I got the new Modem, automatically the AT & T Support tool was updated to the new version and the old one deleted. Now when I open the AT& T Self Support Tool to check the computer and click on the Tools and Settings tab, it goes through the motions but the Internet Script Error 1514 comes up.
I have removed and reinstalled the program several times without success. I have talked to and AT& T technician but got no results since it appears to be an Internet Explorer problem. I have check the "disable script debugging" in Internet Explorer. I have done a complete Scan Disk. Deleted cookies, temporary files ect. No results.
I don't need to use this program but it bothers me that I cannot fix it.

At first my video card was working alright when my OS was WinXP.But then, I switched to Vista a few months ago. at first it was okay so I installed a few games. I tested Left4dead, but while in-game, the PC freezes just a few seconds after the loading screen finshes and there's no option but to reboot. and when i tried playing C&C generals, the PC still freezes just in the menu. And later I found out that everytime 3d rendering is present, the PC would freeze. and so i called a friend and he told me that NVIDIA GeForce 7 Series drivers had many issues when it comes to Vista. So i reverted to WinXP, but now everytime i try to install something or just load up an application, the system just freezes. Can someone tell me what went wrong? did my video card got screwed?

1. Take registry backup in customer computer 2. save this zip file to your desktop 3. Upload this zip file to customer computer using Easy assist transfer 4. Download this zip file in customer computer 5. Extract this zip file in customer computer 6. Right click on the extracted registry file and choose "Merge"

7. Restart the computer.

It worked 2 times. But after that it never worked. Please advice any other solutions.

My wireless N usb network adapter keeps getting updated to Ralink version 3.0.1.0 driver date 5/25/2009. However Microsoft version 3.0.0.61 driver date 2/26/2009 has more features and gves me speeds of 270mbps whereas the Ralink driver onluy gives me a maximum of 54mbps. I am having a serious problem trying to play Call of Duty 4 on Windows 7. It plays fine for a short time then the audio kind of sticks, repeats it self like it is stuttering, then just closes the game. I went to the web site for Activision and they said there that I need to change the Realtek audio drivers to Microsoft Audio driver 6.0 available from Microsoft.com. I searched every way I could think of and can not find this driver. I really want to fix this since COD 4 looks like a great game, from what little I have been able to play. I am running Windows 7 build 7100, Realtek on board audio, Nvidia 9400 GTS vidio, Intel 2.0 GHZ CPU, on a Dell Inspiron with 2 GIG RAM. According to Activision this is a known problem so I am not alone with this, I hope someone that has had this happen to them can tell me what to do to fix it or where to get this driver they suggest will fix it. CA virus had an update version (6604) that mistakenly identifed some files as virus. I was able to restore the files on one computer from the quarentine folder. On a second computer, my wife dumped the files. I am getting an annoying dialog box that pops up repeatedly that has the following:

Headline: "nmctxth.exe-unable to locate component.

Body: "the application has failed to star because nets.exe was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Any ideas on how to fixe?

Everytime I try to go to a web site in Internet Explorer 8, I get a message telling me that it had to recover the page. It does not work 80 percent of the time. Why was I forced to download this buggy program from the Windows Update site? What is happening to Microsoft? Every program I try to use from this company is full of errors and bugs. Is this why I have to sign a a ton of legal agreements everytime I have anything to do with Microsoft software?

When is Microsoft going to get some good programmers and get off of this new world order kick. You need to hire good programmers so the public does not have to constantly fight with your software. It is getting to the point that even your free software is not worth it anymore.

Hello everyone,
I have a problem with the image of win7 and XP Recovery.
The problem was born because I installed a new mobo and I thought that 
problems arise, but it seems that is not so.
Images loads normally, but when you start the OS after the bios does not 
find the disk and restart.
I think the problem is derived from the fact that the new mobo has Promise 
RAID and SATA configuration.
I use the HD as ATA and I disabled RAID and SATA, when law bios 
configuration the first two drivers not them hear, while reads the my as 
third and fourth, I think by stupid that boot is amended accordingly.
I tried to reinstall from scratch and all proceeds normally, but I care 
restore old data.
Someone know me to help to resolve the problem?

Windows Not Logging In...

(Okay before you answer my question please note everything I have ALREADY done...)

I have an IBM Thinkpad T21. At the Windows Welcome screen, upon clicking on User/Administrator to login, the system PLAYS ME like it's going to login, but then logs right back out, going back to the User menu/Welcome screen. I have tried:

-Using the Windows XP install disk to reload the OS.
-Going to BIOS Menu and changing the start-up to CD Rom.
-Using F12 to pull up Boot Device and choosing it to load from the CD Rom
-Using F8 to load in each mode; Safe, Safe with Networking, Safe with Command Prompt, Directory Recovery

I absolutely cannot login to Windows XP to run command prompts or anything else. There is no way of reinstalling Winlogon.exe or even getting into the Windows XP disk without logging in first, as BIOS is not recognizing the disk.

There are no passwords set; I've run a scan on C: from F8, says its clean. I cannot extract anything from the CD, as it is not recognizing it, although the CD drive is functioning correctly.

I do know how to access System Recovery without going through the CD, so if anyone has any other ideas, please help. I would PREFER not to have to spend money on repair software.

I'm sure this is due to a virus.

Remoter Desktop shifting printer ports.

Hello,

We have 4 people that have to use Remote Desktop connections to our sister company and then print back to our local network printers.
My puzzling problem is that when the connection is established to their remote pc their local printer gets assigned an almost random Port #.
So they have to change port number for the printer and then try printing a Test page to see when it actually is going to hit the right one.

Is there any way to make ports permanent?

Ok. I wish I would have posted this question months ago when I was still getting the actual error message when booting (corrupted .sys file I believe). Unfortunately, I had to leave the area so I just bought a computer and moved on. I am trying to fix the problem now. I have a sysinternals and bartpe available to me.

Let me know what you need (bootup beeps, exact response from boot, etc) and I will give you exactly what you want. My vista disk had issues when it came with the computer. I had to call the number on the disk and it magically worked. They said the disk had been used before and they magically made it work. I am having the same issue with the disk. I want to see if I can do this without needing to buy another OS.

Right now, I am in BartPE and I ran chkdsk as read only (without the F option) because I didn't want to dig the hole deeper. It says a LOT of files are corrupted in C:

I have been trying in vain to try to figure out how to use VBA and the
WEB Service References add-in to to allow me to send a request to a
web service that requires authentication information be presented in a
SOAP header. I had no trouble creating many functions, subroutines
and custom classes to the web service via the Web Service References
add-in. That worked slick. Seems to work but I am unable to specify
the soap authentication header. Found an email stating how to do this
via a custom IHeaderHandler module but I never could get it to work.

Recovered Word file from Outlook express attachment but it is all garbled! Desperately need help!

Hi all, I have spent all night editing a Word attachment which I stupidly didn't initially save from Outlook Express, I basically opened the attachment, worked on it then hit save and close, thereby saving the file to a temp folder, which Windows then deleted.

I used data recovery to recover the file and it appears to be the right one because the file size and name is correct. The problem is, it displays as loads of small squares, and then loads of gobbledy gook. I have used every recovery program going, but it is still the same.

I have also tried opening it with all types of encoding and it still is the same. Does anyone have any idea how I can decode this file which I assume has been encoded by Outlook Express? Many thanks, I am very very desperate!

Hello I had successfully installed Windows 7 (32-bit) and got to use it for a day...this morning I realized that i could not read a PDF off internet browser so i went over to Adobe to download then reader for windows 7. it installed successfully and requested me to restart. OK, i restarted the computer and now it will not boot up at all.

The windows loader was able to boot up tried to repair etc...I use Sata RAID...all drivers will not show the installed OS at all. I could not repair the OS at all. wish it had "last known good configuration" that i could click on.

now i am stuck. Hope someone can help

The bios recognize both drives (one as master and one as slave) and I can see both drives in Windows XP System-Device Manager but it will not assign a drive letter to the slave hard drive. This have me stumped; any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

How do you restore My (fill in the blank) in WinXP SP3?

The administrator account got the My Pictures, My Videos, My Music deleted. I tried to restore it by putting in a new folder (My Pictures) and then added a desktop.ini, however the icon doesn't change and all the other accounts on the computer still have %'s Music, %'s Pictures, etc instead of their name in front of these folders. These names can't be changed. I need the My Pictures folder in order to install Adobe CS3.
