Unzip folder server side
- Hello all,
I'm facing a problem : I created my panorama using the photoshop plug-in, then I uploaded the files on the server. Ok, but what is the trick to unzip the folder once it's on a server ?
I use Filezilla 3.0.10 on Win XPpro and the server is running IIs 5.0.

- This really depends on your server. You need to run an unzip utility on your server, so you need to get a command console or somehow run software on your server. If this is not possible then you should uncheck the zip option in the photoshop plugin and ftp the unzipped data.
-Matt - Thanks Matt, but I'm afraid It's not possible to run anything on the server. So I'm currently uploading 5 319 files via Filezilla but for some reason it takes a loooong time, disconnecting every 5 or 10 seconds. It's been 3 hours now and more than 2 000 files are still in the FileZilla queue !
Anyway I'll post here my 256 Mpx panorama when done ;-)
P. - That's too bad. Who is your ISP?

-Matt - Finally after about 14 hours of automatic uploading, my first HDview panorama is out ; I'm not sure the problem come from my ISP (Numericable in France), rather some security barrier on the server (yestesday I've upload a 150 Mb Zip file in less than 10 mn...

As you're in Beta, may I make a remark ?
I find the default zoom factor too hight, would it be possible to add this option in the next Photoshop plug-in release ?

P. - Great picture. I enjoyed browsing this. I see from the xml that you used the HDView only option instead of Dual in the Photoshop plugin. Is this image 16bit? What color spcae where you using in Photoshop?
You can control the initial view by adjusting the parameters in your html file. The easiest thing to do is view the page and get the parameters to what you would like. Then click 'save specific view'.
You will see a url that looks like this:
http://www.animatif.com/panoramas-HD/valence/plaine-de-valence-HDView.htm?FileName=valence76_hdv.xml&Zoom=0.9&XCtr=0.5&YCtr=0.5
those last 3 parameters "&Zoom=0.9&XCtr=0.5&YCtr=0.5" can be added in your html file as follows args = 'FileName=valence76_hdv.xml&BackgroundColor=0&Viewer=0.9&XCtr=0.5&YCtr=0.5';
now this will be the default.

No, this image is 8 bit, sRGB, lack of HD space :-(
Ok, I've changed those parameters like this :
args = 'FileName=valence76_hdv.xml&BackgroundColor=0&Viewer=8.302&XCtr=0.468895&YCtr=0.50905';
Unfortunately it did not change the initial view. I'd say the image is a bit on the right of the screen :

On the other hand, concerning the zoom factor, I've found the command line that adjust the zoom level in the hdv.xml file : maxZoom="2.000000" which is I guess the default setting from the plug-in. Changing to maxZoom="1.000000" give me the same 100% enlarge than my image in Photoshop. I've reach my goal ;-)
Another question : does the jpeg conversion is made by Photoshop or the plug-in ?

Sorry about that my example had a bug - that should be Zoom=0.9 instead of Viewer=0.9 I think if you make this change it will no longer be pushed to the side:

The advantages in HDView only vs Dual are:
1) support for high dyanmic range
2) support for wide color gammut, e.g. ProPhoto
3) support for spherical panos
4) support for HD Photo - to give smaller files - thus faster download times.
The advantage of dual is:
Runs HDView on Windows and uses a Silverlight plugin for the Mac. This means that people can see your content on both platforms.
Since you aren't really taking advantage of 1,2,3 you may want to consider dual output instead.

In your case the plugin generated .wdp files not jpeg. In the dual case the plug-in would generate jpg. But, in either case it is the plugin, not Photoshop, that is generating the image files.

Too bad I didn't know about cross platform abilities, I must have missed some tutorial around here...
Right, I really should change for dual but so long time transfer on the server make me hesitate ;-) unless I find out how to unzip the file on the server (back to first post :-). I'm gonna try to get in touch with a tech at my host.

The auto tone mapping does a nice job a adjusting the contrast here:

hit the curve icon on the top right toolbar to see the effect.

I finally got the new Photoshop plug-in functioning. (Here's the latest result: http://www.larryscascaderesource.com/HDView/Bills/BillsHDV.html I'm working on the same pan using HDR images for the portion of the view that faces the sun.) I thought I might mention some things that confused me in case they might help others. I had first just installed the HD Utililites v1.9 over v1.8. This did not change the plug-in file on my machine - - at least where I was looking for it. After trying again, I finally figured that I probably should have uninstalled the prior version. At that point, the uninstall feature in the control panel showed two HDR Utilities. Uninstalled both, and then re-installed v1.9. Sucess.
It was also not clear to me - - until I read this thread - - that the zip file needs to be unzipped on the server. I puzzled some time over the black and white grid that appeared when I first tried my web link. So then, without paying much thought, I 'opened' the zip file via my FTP program (FTP Voyager). Well, that just downloaded the file, and opened it in Winzip. OK, so I just 'selected all', and uploaded them (which took quite some time), but whoops, Winzip was not set to 'folder view' so it didn't work. Changed to folder view in Winzip and uploaded again, this time with success. I'm no sure how to go about unzipping the file remotely.
In any case, maybe a bit more text about these issues on the plug-in page might help,

We found that many people were using the zip on local machine - unzip on server workflow so we decided to add the ability to zip directly. But, you are entirely correct that we should make it more clear that you need to unzip on the server. HDView(SL) CAN NOT read into zip files stored on the server.Great image BTW. It's always a pleasure to see your pictures of the Cascades.

Right; I knew to look in the MS Research folder in Program Files(x86). But when I installed v1.9 over 1.8, the plug-in I had previously found was not changed. Maybe the new version went elsewhere! Finally got that resolved.
And I figured out how to unzip on the server. It's very easy if you are lucky and your server uses cPanel; just go to the File Manager, find the zip file and 'Extract'. I'm amazed at how rapidly this is done. Only a second or two. So thanks for this feature; it really speeds the upload, and it saves having thousands, tens of thousands, of files on the local machine, ones that the antivirus software just might decide it needs to scan when doing a full scan. (I think.) :-)
I've been doing more HD View pans, and better yet, I've figured out how to convert my labeled pans in PDF format (originally intended to be printed as small booklets) to HD View. Here's the link:
