Windows One Care and Live not working - PC acting strange

Turned on my laptop. Noticed two things.
1. The internet connection icon (bottom right) showed a cross through it - indicating I wasn't connected to the internet. When I tried clicking on the icon nothing happened. I tried surfing the internet and no problem - it worked. But the icon is still crossed out.
2. I couldn't connect to Windows OneCare - a message had said it had stopped working for some reason. So I went to help and it told me to type "services.msc" in my start search, but no cursor appeared in the box, so I couldn't type anything - and all start functions were inaccessible. So I restarted my PC, but still have the same problem.
My PC is protected by OneCare, but I'm worried that OneCare is no longer working properly. A few months ago I received notification from Windows that OneCare was being discontinued and my subscription would end in August 2010. I was told that I would be notified of the next product, but haven't received anything. So do I go and buy Anti-virus software from Norton etc. and uninstall Windows OneCare?
What's wrong with my PC and why is Windows OneCare and my Start functions not working? What's going on???

Check the PC date and time -
Right click the clock in the system tray. Select Adjust Date and Time.
Verify and correct the month, day, year, hour, minutes and time zone.
Reboot if you changed any of the above.
That's the most likely cause of that error.
You can also contact support.

In IE, go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN and make sure that nothing is checked.
Also in IE, go to Tools and make sure that Work Offline has not been selected.
You can choose whatever security you wish once your OneCare sub ends.
See this post for End of Life information for Windows Live OneCare - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecaregeneral/thread/81996436-edad-41ba-bdfc-02fc094e2ca9
Uninstall OneCare http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecaregeneral/thread/732e6371-2e71-479a-8cd6-b189941ed4fb, use the cleanup tool: http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/399071e2-49dc-4767-932d-d261e3965943/, and then download and install the free Microsoft Security essentials for malware protection - http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/resources.aspx
If you used OneCare for backups, you'll still be able to restore from old backups if you use the OneCare Restore tool - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecarebackupandrestore/thread/e5d686c8-762b-4b22-bc08-bfb93f911e57, but you'll need to seek an alternative backup solution.

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 1:49 AMI am having the same exact problem. Plus I can't access anything in my security panel to compensate for the loss of OneCare. Nor can I access iTunes. I think there was more but it's making me worried that my tower is going to get hacked.

Same problem - started today when my wife booted her Vistat Home Premium (64)bit laptop. Network icon in bottom right is showing with red X although the laptop is working wirelessly. One Care comes up with an error message that it can't start. In Task Manager/Services WinDefend (Windows defender) is listed as "Stopping". Anytime I run something that requires administrator access the process locks up (Command Prompt, One care cleaner/installer, ActiveX scripts lock up IE...) Was an update pushed recently for One Care/Windows Defender?
