You're right, Duane, and thanks for that feedback.

It is referenced in a number of the OneCare KB articles, but there is no page that I could find that describes in detail what the utility does and what it applies to. We know that it works to cleanup all current versions of OneCare, but it still leaves some bits behind, particularly in 2.0.

I believe you are a MS specialist and hope you can resolve my question.  I bought Windows Live OneCare mainly for its Data Backup and Performance Tune-up capabilities.  I am installing it but it forces me to get rid of my Norton Security.  Is it possible to use only what I need from this software?  if not, then I will have to return it.

    Thanks in advance.

You can't use parts of OneCare and parts of Norton. You'll need to select one or the other.

I would not recommend using this tool.  I used it and have lost the drivers for my DVD drives on my PC.  I was able to recover them from a backup.  However, I assumed that it was something other than the cleanup tool and ran it on my laptop with exactly the same results.  Windows shows the drives in the device manager, but will not allow me to update or fix the drivers without using a system restore point.

IF YOU USE THIS TOOL CREATE A RESTORE POINT FIRST.  YOU MIGHT NEED IT.

Just out of frustration, I used the 90 free trial installation since the DVD drives were having issues.  By sheer dumb luck the install corrected the issue.  I do not know that it will work in every case, but if your drives are missing and you can't install from a DVD, try using the free trial install, it just may save you hours of frustration.

Using the tool can cause this problem - and it can also happen with a simple uninstall via add/remove programs. You can restore the drives by using fellow MVP, Doug Knox's utility here -

The problem occurs with certain burning software existing on the PC before the OneCare install/removal.

Thank you, that is very good information to have.  Also, the tool worked very well.

    Thanks,
