Answered Project 2010 timeline

I am trying to print out a timeline between specific dates only.  I have set the dates in the print settings, set the paper size and orientation, all the normal things, but timeline still will only print the whole period from start of project to end of project.  This then leaves me with only being able to select the specfic pages I want.  The problem is that where the timeline I set up would fit on one page only, it now covers 3 pages, 1/2 of one page and about 1/2 the third page.  If I set it to print on a specific number of pages, it prints the whole time line again onthat number of pages.

Is there a setting I am missing to be able to print timeline between dates, in the same way as I can print a Gantt chart only between specifc dates?

    Thanks

To clarify - are you trying to print the Timeline view in MS Project 2010?? Or are you printing another view?? Not all reports will give a date range option in the print options.  Many reports will print what you see on the screen.

In the MS Project 2010 timeline view, while clicked in the view, you can adjust the timeline using the zoom slider in the lower right corner of the screen.

Yes, I asm trying to print the timeline view in Project 2010.  The settings does give me the option to select dates and I have st those, and the 'slider' does only have the section of timeline I want printed, highlighted, yet that view still wants to pirnt out the whole project timeline.  The section I need is for a period of around 12 months, the whole project has a total duration of 6 years, hence the need to only print a small section of the project.  All the zoom does is increase the timescale and reduces the number of pages over which, again, the whole timeline from project start tp project finish.

Thank you for the clarification of your question.  I tried what you are asking about with the same results you are getting.  I also would like to see the ability to have a date range filter applied to this view.  Since none is available and the dates when printing do not affect the print selection, I think your only choice is to remove what you do not want printed from the view.

When clicked in the Timeline View the Existing Tasks button will allow you to refine what is displayed in the view.  You might consider creating a customized field which indicates sections of your project.  Then remove all tasks shown in the Timeline View, filter your tasks by project section or date range, select those tasks and add them to the Timeline View.

I hope this helps. I believe you have run into a capability restriction in the software but this work around might do the trick for you.

Within Project, as you have found, you can't update the Timeline start and finish dates when viewing or printing it. You can though only copy a segment of the timeline and then paste it into another application such as PowerPoint. That would be a way to only print a section of the Timeline view.

    Hi,

Yes I agree that is an option.  However as noted above by Ellen, this is a 'failing' that Microsoft may wish to look at for future releases.  The option you have suggested is jus that an option, however it would be a little like suggesting that to print out a Gantt chart over a particular date range, simply copy and paste.  I doubt if that would be considered a final solution.

I hope this is seen as a positive 'criticism' as the feature does real merit when presenting to many managers who simply seem not to like the Gantt view and will often ask that the Gantt view is represented in an Excel spreadsheet.

Thanks though for your help and suggestions, do Microsoft ever get to see these issues? Else how would a suggestion such as this be notified to Microsoft?

I'm from the Microsoft Project product team so I can assure Microsoft see's this issue. :-) Myself and a number of other team members do read this newsgroup on a regular basis.

This is definitely valuable feedback that we have heard many times about the timeline and something we will consider for a future release. In the meantime you will need to use the workaround I mention above.

    Thanks,

    Thank you Heather,

Thought that might have been the answer but I dont like 'assume'.

    Thanks for all the responses.

I was hoping this issue would be addressed in SP1, but I don;t see mention of it in the change log.   This really is a short comming, and most projects have long and complex timelines.  With the current solution I end up having to do a large amount of effort to get the timeline that I need into status reports, and presentations.

Any idea if this will make it into a hotfix or next SP?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

This functionality wasn't added in SP1 and there are no plans to add it to a future version of Project 2010.

I've taken this feedback back to the team and we will consider it for a future release.

    Thanks,

    Heather

Another workaround I have been using.   Update the big project plan, when you are ready to share the timeline, copy the specific tasks that you want to show, create a new project, and past these tasks into that new project.  Add them all to a timeline.  It's a couple extra steps, but works well for a few tasks that you want to export as timline view into a presentation or email.

After struggling for an hour, I found a solution that works if with you have Adobe Acrobat.  I am also using Project 2007.

Save the project file as pdf file.  (Print->Name->select Adobe PDF).  It will automatically capture the description (Name) and the timeline centered on the active dates!  Now you can resize (zoom) the file, prnt screen and paste the picture into a powerpoint chart.  viola!   You may need to stretch the picture a bit, so you may need to increase the font (Format->Font) and change the size of the bar (Format->Layout->Bar Height).

    Thank you thank you....=)
