    Hi,  help !

I have Project Server 2007 + SP2 + December CU for demo on a laptop.

While I was doing nothing on it, suddenly the fan starts to whistle. I succeeded (after 5 minutes) to open the Task Manager and I was able to note that 2 services were running mad:
     - OWSTIMER (User: WSS project server): 50% of the CPU
     - wsstracing.exe: (User: Local service) : 49% of the CPU
I was not able to stop any service or Windows Server 2003. I had to shut down the computer.
What could be the cause of this fury?
    Thanks for any idea

As a relief, kill those services through Task manager to get the system in control.

Then analyze the ULS logs and Timer jobs to identify the culprit.

Any error message in the event log?

Have you scheduled any synchronization job?

What is the utilization of your SQLserver.exe?

I've seen this happen when SharePoint decides to start indexing its content for search. It uses so much system resources on a demo machine that it can take a while for the system to respond to launching Task Manager, let alone shutdown an applicaiton. Do you by chance have search enabled on this sytem? If so, disable it.

    Thanks Gary,

I do have Search enabled on this system. I'll disable it!
