can you pull multiple projects into a single project/view for producing consolidated timeline and resource team planner views but not make them sub-projects

Sunday, May 13, 2012 3:13 AMI have multiple projects in PWA. I do not want to put them into a master project but I do want to in some way, in project pro 2010, pull/inport them into a single group or view so I can show all of these projects in a consolidated timeline view and also be able to see resources allocated all across these projects.

Hi Cletus51,
There is no way to do this in the client that I am aware of if you don't want to use Master Projects.
On the server side, there are a few ways to create a consolidate timeline using either Visio
(http://azlav.umtblog.com/2011/08/09/creating-a-portfolio-timeline-report-in-visio-part-1/) or Reporting Services (http://thinkepm.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/creating-portfolio-timeline-using-ssrs.html)
As for resource allocation across the projects, that too should be easy using SSRS, you will have to get your head around the reporting db, but it's fully documented in the Project Server 2010 sdk (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=15511)
Hope this helps,

Cletus --The solution is to create a TEMPORARY master project, which will meet all of your reporting objectives. By temporary, I mean that you create the master project, do your analysis, and then close the master project without saving it. That is a technique that I often use personally, and it works just fine. Hope this helps.Dale A. Howard [MVP]

Hi cletus51,
in addition to Alex' and Dale's answer, you may actually create and save the master project without impact for the (sub)projects just as long as you do not publish the master project. A project can be a subproject of many draft master projects, but only one published master project. If you don't publish the master, it also will not be listed as subproject in project centre, the master will not appear in the reporting database, the project hierarchy will not appear in the OLAP database.
All the tasks, e.g. viewing the consolidated timeline in Project Client and having combined resource usage views in the client all work perfectly fine in Project Client.
Kind regards,
