Can I use SQL Server Web Edition 2008 for Project Server 2010? This is only for a hosted demo environment rather than production?

    thanks in advance.

    Yes you can.

    Kindly refer following article

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee683978.aspx#section8

Section " Single server that uses built-in database"

The 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, Data Center, or Web Server with SP2; or the 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Data Center, or Web Server.

Since you are looking for Demo environment, you may consider using Microsoft Demo image

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27417

Nice thing about this demo image is, it has pre-loaded data which can be utilized to explorer different features of Project Server 2010. Image will be valid for 180 days

Another option is installing SharePoint in standalone mode will automatically install SQL Server express edition.

However you need to be aware about the limitations of SQL server express edition and everything will be installed either using Local service or Network service

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197667.aspx

Note: Standalone installation type cannot be converted into Complete or farm server mode. You need to completely uninstall Project\SharePoint and re-install from the scratch with appropriate option
