StickyHow do I send alerts?

You can send alerts to let your people know when something important is happening or when you need assistance. Alerts are a good way to get time-sensitive information out when it matters.

One of the ways people can receive the alerts you send is on their mobile devices. For this reason, it's important to keep all your alert messages short, so everyone can read them easily.

You can send alerts to groups
you have created, to your emergency contacts group, or to the people you choose. Alerts sent by text (SMS) and e-mail can be sent to any of your groups.

Send alerts from a mobile device

You can send alerts via text (SMS) message from a mobile device if you have added the device and activated it in Microsoft Vine on the Vitals drawer.

To send a text (SMS) alert:

    ·          On your mobile device, send a short text message to the short code (i.e. 84630) for the group you want to reach.

For more information about sending text alerts, see the help topic, "Enable mobile devices for use with Microsoft Vine."

    Tip

If you’ve forgotten the code for the group you want to alert, you can find it by clicking People on the dashboard, clicking the Groups tab, clicking the group name, and viewing the group card. Be sure to save your group codes to your contacts for easy use later. Or, print an emergency card by following the procedure in the topic, "Take your contact information with you."

Send alerts from an e-mail account

You can send alerts via e-mail from an e-mail application, if the address you use for that application is added to and verified in Microsoft Vine. Send alerts via e-mail when you’re at a computer that does not have the Microsoft Vine application.

To send an alert via e-mail:

    1.     Start your e-mail application and create a new message.

    2.     In the To field, enter the e-mail address for the group you want to reach. Group e-mail addresses use the format, <Group number><User PIN>@vine.net.

    3.     Enter a title for the message, enter a short message, and then send the message.

    Warning
To protect the identity of your group PIN, send alerts via e-mail only to Microsoft Vine e-mail addresses.

    Tip

If you’ve forgotten the e-mail address for the group you want to alert, you can find it by clicking People on the Microsoft Vine dashboard, clicking the Groups tab, clicking the group name, and viewing the group card. Be sure to save your group e-mail addresses to your contacts for easy use later.

Send alerts from the Microsoft Vine dashboard

    1.     On the dashboard, click Send Alert.

    2.     Enter a subject and a short message.

    3.     In the Send to field, select a group, or add individual people by clicking Add recipient and double-clicking affiliates to add them to the Send to list.

    Tip

You can remove affiliates from the Send to list by right-clicking them and selecting  Remove recipient.

    4.     Click Send Alert.

Will sending a text/SMS message to the short code (i.e. 84630) work when roaming internationally? For example, my mobile service is with AT&T, and I often travel to Vancouver BC. Will I be able to send a SMS using the short code while roaming in Canada?

    Thanks,
    Peter

Our short codes may work on a US phone while roaming in Canada depending on the roaming agreement in place between the US carrier and the host carrier. I believe AT&T has roaming agreement with Rogers(AT&T) so most probably it should work.

    More details:
For GSM devices it is likely to work, and there is a pretty friendly roaming infrastructure.

You can use following reference to get some insight into whether there are roaming agreements between carriers (at least for GSM).

    http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ca.shtml

This is the page for Canada - so you can select "roaming partners" and see who a given carrier in Canada has roaming agreements with.

    Hope this helps.
