    Hi,

yesterday I installed Windows 8 CR 32bit. After that I tried to connect it to my WHS2011. After some tries (4 I believe) I could load the connector, but it was unable to instal to to incompatibilities...

I had the developer preview running with WHS 2011 without probs.

    regards

    Ken,

I just installed the WHS v1 connector, it found that .NET 4.0 was missing, installed it and worked. Then I de-installed the WHS V1 connector, installed the WHS2011 connector and all worked. For me the Installation of the Connector did not really recoginize, that the  :NET 4.0 component was missing!

    To quote myself:

Submit a bug report on Connect, please.

Windows 8 includes .Net framework version 4.5, rather than 4.0. While 4.5 includes the full CLR, the class libraries have had a bunch of stuff dropped. What your workaround probably means is that the connector uses something duplicated by a Windows runtime API, or that's deprecated. This is information that the HSBS team really ought to already have, but I'm a "belt and suspenders" kind of guy. :)

In general, workarounds are all well and good, but if it's at all possible (and obviously, since you're running an unsupported beta operating system on hardware, it should be possible) bugs like this should be submitted and logs uploaded before any workaround is applied.

The thought of Ken in suspenders (English rather than American) is something I don't want to think about for long!!

This is going to fall in the category of "things you wish you could un-see", so move along if you're weak of stomach...

When I was young, I was a huge fan of the cult movie favorite "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". In the USA, it's traditional for the hardcore fans to get up on stage and act along with the actual movie, usually in costumes that are similar to those worn in the movie. I did this a few times, usually playing the Dr. Frank N. Furter role that Tim Curry played in the movie.

    So yes, Ken in "suspenders".

Oh dear, oh dear - given that it originated in England (Britain to you Colonials) that makes the vision even worse! This is my last comment on the subject!

In English parlance, those are "braces". What the British call "suspenders" or a "suspender belt" we call a "garter belt".

I told you it would be something that you would wish you could un-see. :)

Honestly, I don't think "Rocky Horror" is Richard O'Brien's very best work. I think "Shock Treatment" is a better film, and I think his "Mephistopheles Smith" character is a better series of performances than either movie. But he's truly a great performer, IMO.

Don't braces go on the teeth?

     Proposed Answer

    Hi,
For the workaround explained in the article below to work, make sure you download the clinet connector software to the W8 client's Desktop first. Then set it to Windows 7 compatibility mode (right-click, compatibility tab) before executing the connector.

Quoting from Known issues when join windows 8...

    Issue 1
You need to Enable .net 3.5 in windows 8 in order to join WHS 2011

    Symptom:
When you tried to join a windows 8 client machine to WHS 2011, you will see an error.

    Workaround:
You need to enable .Net Framework 3.5.

To enable .Net Framework 3.5 in Windows 8 32bit OS
    1. Log on to the Widows 8 client machine.
    2. Click Start, Type Control Panel, and then press Enter to open Control Panel.
    3. Click Uninstall a program.
    4. Click Turn Windows features on or off.
    5. Check all .Net Framework 3.5 Items in pop-up Windows Features dialog.
    6. Click OK to Search and download required files, and then complete .Net Framework 3.5 Components installation.

Not this issue only applies to WHS 2011.

No, braces, along with bits, are used for making holes in wood.

I installed the connector last night for my computer running the Preview and didn??t have any problems. It did state that it would have to install .net but it did what it was supposed to do, installed and went from there. On another note this was a clean installation of 8 CP.

I have backed up and restored, all functions seem to be working on the first day. I will see what happens when it backs up over night
