Lights Out not working

There seems to be a trick to get the add in Lights Out working. I recently needed to reinstall my WHS OS and installed Lights Out, looked at the instructions and it does not seem to be going to sleep. If I place the server to sleep in doing a test the clients do not seem to be able to wake it up. I get the impression that the settings for client monitoring automatically put the server to sleep after so long but in testing it does not seem to do anything for me.

I wondered what is the trick to get this working. I have tried both an on board NIC and an Intel PRO pci card.

Batch Video File Conversions

Are there any programs/ addins that will take a folder of ripped DVDs and convert them automatically to say WMV or AVi files so i can stream to my Xbox without transcoding on the fly or having a WMS in the mix? My thoughts were like a service running that moniters a folder and when a TS folder was droped in it would automatically start converting and drop the finished file into my shared video folder. Sounds good at least :)... Thanks

Problems with AutoExit Add-In

I added the AutoExit Add-in from Asoft to my WHS. This looks like a pretty useful add-in, particularly since it allows you to remotely wake-up any of the computers connected to your LAN through the WHS. The Wake-On LAN (WOL) works great. Unfortunately, none of the other functions seem to work at all. I am unable to remotely shutdown a PC, put it to sleep or hibernate, or send messages. The only function that works is the WOL. Any suggestions as to how I may configure differently?

Local HTTPS WebService call fails after install MS09-048

Hello All,
We have two websites running on Win 2003 SP2 server. One is an ASP.NET Website which inturn uses ASMX WebService site as its datalayer. The connection is made using http://localhost:8570/WebServiceName.asmx.

It was working without any problem for TWO years and on Oct 31st, MS09-048 patch was installed on the server. Starting Nov 2nd, under load - the ASP .NET Website fails to connect to the WebService site intermittently. The error is:

Exception type: WebException
Exception message: Unable to connect to the remote server

Immediate Action:
We have uninstalled the patch for MS09-48. I'll update you tomorrow if this has a positive effect on the situation.

Next Steps:
Anybody facing a similar situation and have any clues?

Disk Management Addin

I am trying to setup a wire frame for The WHS Disk Management Addin, but its only allowing me to add 1 drive, when I go to add more, the right Arrow is shaded grey and the left is black enabling me to go back instead of forward, is there anyway around this.

windows home server unable to create volume snapshot in auto mode. a vss problem ?

hi guys,

the pc in question is a ghosted image with a different key and the hard ware is about 1-1.5 months older. same cpu, same hard drives and all from the same vender. i do have 4 pc's, 1 WHS, and 2 laptops on my network, all work but this one. 3 pc's ( including this one.) windows XP 32bit sp3. laptops running vista 32 ulmit. and 1 with xpsp2 64bit

one has the problem and the other does not.

the one that come up with the back up error. i can do a back up from the pc, and from the network ( ie. from a pc in the other room and from the server itself) a manual backup with out a problem. but when the timer on the server comes on and says to the network time for a backup. get in line and get ready to start. it does not and says the " can not do a snapshot ".

ok done chkdsk, done the reg hack, defrag, and even went and turned off the save power on the nic card, which WHS wants to turn on by default.
a error showed up this morning in the event log on the pc. it was "can not do a shadow copy because of the free space."
like i said 2 pc's and one work and this one does not.

the drive in question is a 1tb drive. it has 685 gb free space.
went and looked at the application events and about 30 min after the back up was ended by the server this showed up.

you may think, yet another runtime management Add-In.

Yes, but this one is different!

LightsOut - The name says it all.
This Add-In is used to put a Windows Home Server into suspended mode or hibernation and resume on user defined events.

Description
To go to sleep, you can choose from several methods:
• On demand, if no more clients are active
• Based on a calendar, as a single action or repeated each weekday
• Or as a combination of both methods

You can define times, where the server has to be up and running:
• Using the calendar
• Based on the defined backup time

Wake up
A suspended or hibernated server can be resumed using a calendar event.
You can also install a small application on your client machines to wake up your server when needed.

Additional functionality
The Add-In visualizes the uptime of your client machines, your server and the backup time. So you can easily identify the
machine which puts the server into sleep.

Data integrity
To reduce the risk of data loss, the server is never put into sleep during an active backup operation or a backup cleanup.
You can define services, which are stopped on suspend and restarted after resume. The DriveExtenderMigrator always
belongs to this list of services. Additional services like a mail server can be added.

Remote access detection. During remote access LightsOut keeps the server running. After Logoff LightsOut waits 3 additional minutes and then resumes normal behaviour

Note: Windows Home Server has a 20 minutes default time out for an inactive remote access.

Restart WHS console again and go to LightsOut. Now 3 new tests are running:
- is LoService running? (is doing most of the work)
- is SBCore (sbscrexe) still running?
- are there duplicate client machines (names)?

If any problem is detected, a message box is displayed with some information and if necessary
the online help will display additional information.

If everything is well, it's time to update the clients using the LightsOutClientInstaller.

Just wondering if there is a way to write new storage drivers. It would be cool if there was a way to add NAS (network attached storage) support to the storage pool. Anyone researched the possibility of this with the new API's?

utorrent problem

I have Utorrent installed on my WHS Box and am haveing a few problems..

1. If i put a torrent file in my specified folder for D/L it never sees the file and starts the D/L

2. if i access Utorrent from WHS console with the Administrative user that Utorrent is installed under I can add files to be D/L but the start go for about a min and stop with "network path not found" error. The file never writes to any directory i specify wether its a local path or a //server/ path.

3. If i access Utorrent with the Web GUI using the same user as 2. i can add files and d/l them but when they are finished Utorrent doesnt move them to the specified folder they are good files just not in the specified folder.

They also continue to D/l even after i close the web GUI.

Not sure what i have installed wrong or what but any insite is greatly appreciated...

Hi,

I have created an µTorrent add-in for the Windows Home Server Console.

Features:

Manage all torrents currently in µTorrent (start, pause, stop, remove).
Add a new torrent by selecting a *.torrent file.
Add a new torrent by providing an URL.

The add-in will not work when the µTorrent WebUI is disabled.

You can configure the following settings from the WHS settings:

The WebUI server (example: http://localhost:2048/gui/).
The user name and password for the provided server.
Enable/disable auto-refresh
Set the auto-refresh interval to a value of 1 to 60 seconds.

The provided server, user name and password can be tested from within the settings by pressing the "Test configuration" button. A line underneath this button will show whether or not the configuration is correct. A green line indicates a correct configuration, a red line indicates that something is incorrect.

This add-in will only work with µTorrent, any other torrent-client is not supported and will never be supported.

The add-in can be downloaded from one of the locations below. You can also find a few screenshots there.

The add-in can be installed using the Windows Home Server Console by placing the msi-file in the \\[server]\Software\Add-Ins folder.

Multi zone audio addin

I have been working on a multizone audio addin for my WHS and I was wondering what kind of interest people had in something like this?

Right now it allows you to create multiple "zones" each mapped to a soundcard and then lets you play your media in any of those zones. So if you had 3 zones in your house you would need 3 soundcards. I was also considering adding support for some kind of wireless device but havent found any I thought were cheap enough. Control is done through a pocketpc application that could run on any WM5/6 device.

Some of the other features are allowing you to move from room to room and maintain your playlist, and/or playing the same playlist in multiple zones.

Add Ins Not Showing in Available tab

I have tried everything I can think of, but even thought I have copied a couple of MSIs for Recorded TV Manager 3 into the \\whs\Software\Add-Ins directory and restarted my WHS connection AND restart the WHS, I still cannot see these Add Ins in the available tab.

What am I doing wrong?

I want to know is there a hdd labeler like Jerry McCollom's MediaSmart Drive Labeler as I know this will not work on non MediaSmart Servers, and I know that if the drives can be labeled right then if one fails then I know which one to take out and replace.

Disk Management Addin 1.0.9.8 - Storage Pool drive assignment

I am having a heck of a time trying to get the WHS system disk connected to the SATA 1 port on the MB and get the BIOS to boot from that drive. The BIOS only shows the drive model and not the serial number. Anyway, that will get resolved by trial and error. The real question is how does WHS or the Disk Management Addin determine what Disk Number to assign. It appears that after removing and adding a couple of storage pool drives the assignment is random?! The WHS system disk moved from Disk 0 to Disk 2 as an example.

I have four 250GB drives in the WHS storage pool. Two WD and two Seagate. For some reason the Disk Management Addin will only show me the serial number on one WD and one Seagate drive. Is this just me or is this a known issue? Also, I am trying to build a wire diagram but run into a brick wall one the second drive. Is there any detailed "how to" out there for beginners. One more question - I removed two other WD 250GB drives because Disk Management said they were running much hotter than the other two WD drives. Thank you Disk Management and WD - the drives had one month left on their warranty and WD will replace. The two WD drives that I removed were replaced by the Seagate drives. WHS prior to the remove/add routine kept all the storage drives pretty much equally utilized. Now, the last drive added is just starting to fill up and the other two storage drives are at 80% full. Normal?

Small level Internet Backup

I was wondering if anyone new if there was an Add-In for backing up a home server through the internet to another home server. I know that there is a built in S3 type of an account, but I am talking about something much less expensive, simple, etc. I have a friend that also has a home server and what we would like to do is to back up each others info to our systems. In other words, maybe once a week each system will Sync with the other to see if there is data that needs to be updated offsite. We each have several gigabytes of files that include a lot of media files. I rip a lot of my DVD so that I can stream them to the TV's in my house and if my house burned down, I not only loose my home server, but also all my orginal DVDs. Same for my friend. I have plenty of disk space to store all his info and he has plenty to store mine. The problem is, unless we make it an automated system, it will be just like having backup software on you PC, but always being behind.
It would seem like this could be done pretty easy, but I am not a programmer nor do I have the time. There might be commercial software out there, but I looked at cloud backups, etc. and didn't see anything that would work. I even thought about putting a Windows server up at my Son's home to do the backups, but can't seem to find software that I could make work automatically on my end.
Any help would be appreciated...

Microsoft SyncToy 2.0 and WHS?

Can I use SyncToy 2.0 (64-bit) to keep a folder stored on WHS in sync with a folder on one of my other Vista (soon to be W7) systems? I have been using WHS for over a year with no problems but...I still feel better keeping a copy of my critical stuff on another computer as a backup of the backup! Yes, I have duplication turned on and am using four 250GB drives on WHS.

Best way to create playlists on WHS?

A couple of months ago, I bought an HP EX485 in order to consolidate all of my media and access everything remotely. I'm a WHS newbie and am not a programmer, so I'm hoping someone can give me advice about the easiest way to create playlists on the server, preferably remotely. I've spent a couple of hours reading forums and posts about playlists on WHS, but most of them seem to be from before Firefly came installed on or they assume an iTunes history.

Basically, I want the ability to listen to my music at work or when I'm on the road and create playlists from the same interface. Ideally, those playlists would also be available to other users on my server, but I'm willing to export and import for each user if I have to. The native streaming app doesn't include playlist creation, and I'm unclear on how to easily create a static playlist with Firefly. I installed Orb and I like the interface, but for some reason it doesn't see all of the songs on the server. For example, it will show the first five songs of an album but not the last six.

I've always used Archos MP3 players where I created playlists in folders, rather than in software, so I don't have any existing playlists to import. I'm not a big fan of iTunes but will convert to it if it's the easiest way to do this. I'm unclear how I'd 1) create a playlist on the server using it, or 2) create a playlist locally and import it into the native WHS streaming app.

My original goal was to be able to create the playlists as I'm listening to music remotely, but it sounds like that might not be possible. At this point, I'd really appreciate any entry level advice about the best way to add playlists to the server in general.

Need clarification about ITunes integration

Hi,

I need a setup for SqueezeBox and ITunes. I have purchased dbpoweramp to import all songs to the server in FLAC. Now SqeezeBox is happy, but ITunes isnt. I do NOT want ITunes to alter these data at all!! I f need be I could duplicate all songs and have them stored as wav/mp3 for Itunes to mess with. How to setup ITunes for this scenario? What addins do I want for ITunes to be happy?

Edit: ITunes is ONLY used for transferring music to IPods. ITunes is not going to import any music!

Specifying URL links in Whiist

If I have a website in, say, c:\inetpub\folder, and I choose to add it with Whiist, how do I properly specify that in the "Link" field in Whiist?

I entered "/inetpub/folder" as the url but clinking the link on the homepage produced a 404 error.

Is there any documentation that describes exactly how to use Whiist? Andrew Grant's website does not appear to be hosting forums.

French Verson: Whsinfo.GetUsersInfo Broken

I have created a web application for WHS called P80. My application runs on ASP.Net via .net Framework 3.5. MY application runs great on all versions. However only on the French version of Windows Home Server does the following error occur.

When I execute the following code:

Asterisk/Trixbox as a VM on WHS

Having successfully run Windows Vista as a virtual machine, using Windows Virtual Server 2005 on the CTP of WHS I have embarked on a more ambitious project of installing/testing a version of the opensource Asterisk PBX known as Trixbox on WHS RC.

Because Trixbox is designed/compiled to run on Linux it will be necessary to run a virtual machine consisting of Linux + Trixbox on WHS. Fortunately, there is an already existing "appliance" from VMware consisting of Trixbox 2.2 installed on CentOS Linux. I will first install VMware Server, which is designed to run on Windows Server 2003 (and other server OS's such as Linux) and then install the aforementioned VMware Trixbox 2.2 appliance.

My reason for creating a discussion thread on this list is to see if any other list members are interested in having a personal/home PBX running on their WHS server.

Although Asterisk is not designed with the average home user in mind, it does, in fact, have a lot of functions that could be useful in the home environment when coupled with suitable VOIP/Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) handsets now available at reasonable (less than $100) prices from Cisco/Linksys and other suppliers. This could be helpful for those running home based businesses. Of course, there are also stand alone appliances available from Cisco/Linksys, and, even Microsoft, that provide PBX functionality for the SOHO user but the idea behind this effort is to reduce box "clutter" in the home wiring closet, such as it is, and to provide a unified management interface. Asterisk itself already has considerable momentum behind it and there are several companies providing hw appliances based on that software.

If anyone else is working on his kind of capability I would appreciate hearing from you on this list.

Using WHS to email links to large files.

Is it possible to email a link to a file located on WHS? The recipient would simply click on that link to initiate download without a need to enter user name & password etc. This would be a great way to send files over 10Mb that are often rejected by many email systems.

The WHS console only allows and admin to control Share permissions at the root level. I would like to be more specific with regards to which WHS users have access to specific files and folders within the WHS shares that I have created. Will I break WHS home server if I Remote Desktop into the Home Server console and adjust the NTFS permissions for folders and files within my WHS Shares? Is there a WHS addin that will allow and administer to adjust NTFS file / folder permissions? Would it be safer to create a share on a drive that is not part of the storage pool, if I need to adjust the NTFS file and folder permission ACLS?

Grid Junction (Power Alert/Power Restore Events)

I have a separate UPS for the WHS (Acer EasyStore). I'm getting events occurring (~ 12 in the last two weeks) that are monitored/reported on Grid Junction and transferring to "Battery Power" on the CyberPower UPS (CP 550SL) for extremely short periods of time . These interruptions are typically 1-8 seconds and seem to occur almost exactly at 10:00 AM and 11:00 PM. They are not sensed / reported on the other UPS (APC 900 XS which carries the balance of the network). Although the UPS's are on different circuit breakers they are both on the same residential panel.

This sounds to me like a momentary voltage dip when the local power utility adds/ takes generators off line. This is typically done late morning / late evening.

Has anybody else experienced this type of event??

You won't see generators coming off or online. What you will see are momentary glitches due to one of two things: a tap changer on the transformer in the substation that serves your distribution line and/or a tap change in an inline voltage regulator.

I see the same kind of thing you do, perhaps not at such precise times. About 6:30a one of the UPSs I have will momentarily switch to battery for a few seconds. That transient usually shows up too in any lights that happen to be on and dimmed at that time as a brief glitch. The other UPSs ignore it.

It's nothing to worry about.

How do I install WHS Disk Management Add_In?

I downloaded WHSDiskManagement.msi and copied it to the \??????server\Software\Home Server Add-Ins folder. I then went to the WHS Console and Selected Server Storage at the top of the window and then selected Add-ins along the left side of the window - it shows no Add-ins installed (correct) and no Add-ins available to install(?). I know I am missing the obvious but help me out - where should I have put the Add-In so that is will show up so I can install it?

Vista has spoiled me. I am trying to install a driver for a CyberPower UPS. I would like to use their driver which I have stored on a shared WHS folder called \??????server\Software\CyberPower UPS\ppp122setup.exe. I wanted to use the CyberPower driver/program in place of the default UPS driver since it has additional features. Anyway, two questions - 1. Will the Cyberpower program work on WHS it seems to work everywhere else. 2. How do I get past the "Windows cannot access thes pecifiied device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access." I do not have a CD or DVD readed on this system and the file is too big for the old floppy. When I set the system up originally I think I installed the Nvidia Video Driver from a DVD. What do I have to do to get WHS to let me access a hard drive on WHS or any hard drive folder on my network? I know it is a dumb question but I've been using Vista too long and cannot find where or how to get permission on WHS to use my own machine! Brings back the frustrating XP days. Just kidding but I do need help.

Where can I find now current definitive reviews of all AntiVirus software for WHS? All of these forums, etc. have reported numerous historical problems with just about everything that is supposed to run on WHS. We need to repository of current facts. Also, would a more complete Internet Security package be of any use running on WHS if it is indeed accessed by family and friends remotely?

The final step has been taken, AutoExit 2009 is nearly finished.

I have released a new version which has 1 major new feature: multilingual.
The new version now supports: French, German & Japanese. (Spanish is partially in, but I still need some people to help translate)
The Setup has been made smaller and packaged as a zip file instead of 1 installer.

Other new features (that were already available in the Beta) are:
- Wake On Lan all clients.
- Send a message to all connected clients.
- Warn users when the server is going down.
- Support for Windows 7.
- Possibility to the Wake On Lan port to send to.
- Possibility to enable easy logging on the client side.
- Mac-address of the server is retrieved when opening the diagnostic dialog and the Mac field being empty.
- When downloading an update, it is automatically saved to the 'Server\Software' or 'Server\Logiciel' folder, if none of these exist the browse directory dialog is shown.
- Fix: On some machines the actions did not work and an error 998 was displayed, this has been fixed.
- Fix: Fixed issue that settings in Vista/Windows 7 weren't read correctly and made the AutoWOL Server function not work.
- Fix: Now when a client comes out of sleep, a WOL packet is sent to the server if enabled.
- Fix: Small improvement to the update dialog to show the product name.
- Fix: When using hibernate/sleep, the machine sometimes couldn't be enabled again.
- Fix: Detects if Remote Desktop is enabled on a Home Edition.
- And some other minor adjustments.

Can't uninstall Avast from WHS

I installed the trial version of Avast and it expired. I tried the remove Add-in, but that didn't work. Everything that I try fails, mostly for "Access Denied" messages. I've tried the tool that Avast provides, but it says that I need to reboot WHS in Safe Mode, which is not possible with my headless WHS machine. I've tried downloading a newer trial version, but the .msi file is not recognized as a new add-in to select. I've downloaded the .exe version, but it does not install (probably due to the security policies setup by HP on the WHS by default). Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to remove this install of Avast on my WHS?

I've recently installed the WHS Toolkit V1.1 on my XP Pro PC and I've done the "Publish Server Add-In" to my WHS server.

Back on my Xp Pro PC using the WHS console, , I'm receiving the following error message from within the WHS/Settings/Toolkit 1.1/Home Server Connectivity Details:

Checking Windows Home Server App Pool Status......
FAIL: Windows Home Server AppPool is off.

This is the only error showing a FAIL status.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do to remedy this?

I just ordered the parts to build my own Windows Home Server, and I was wondering if the following could be done.

1.) Let's see I'm somewhere and say, Microsoft.com for whatever reason is blocked at this place. Could I connect to my home server and access Microsoft.com via my Home Server? (Which I am building to be always on).

2.) Say I'm somewhere I am browsing the internet and then suddenly want to start downloading a big file, but I want it to be on my home server instead of the computer I am using (maybe a library computer). Is there a way I could get a bunch of links (perhaps rapidshare, or batch download), copy them, and paste them into a downloader, which would download them for me?

a. If the following is possible, does WHS have the functionality to unzip/rar files remotely? (Assuming I have WinRAR installed)

3.) Finally, I know WHS can store all my photos/music/videos, but can I get on any computer and play them back via YouTube type interface? Or, at the very least, download them? And, I can buy a domain name and set it to be my windows home server name, right? (if I do this, could I have multiple home servers and have say the first one be www.domainname.com/server1/[serverfiles], www.domainname.com/server2[serverfiles]? Using multiple servers, but the same domain?

WHS, Whiist website, IIS_WPG permissions removed

Hi everyone,

Without fail, my website is disabled every night from internet access. I've followed carefully the Whiist instructions for the website setup. My folder structure is the following:
Shares (IIS_WPG does not exist at this level)
     Websites (IIS_WPG added last to this site)
          TTHome (IIS_WPG added to this folder second after the following)
               App_Data (IIL_WPG added here first)

WHS, by design I'm told, will remove IIS_WPG from the Websites folder. It remains on the children TTHome and App_Data; to regain internet access, I put it back on the Websites folder.

I've checked for inherited permissions and have completely removed IIS_WPG permissions from everything and started over twice. I'm not sure what else to do, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Surely I'm not the only person who has this problem. In the other messages that I've found, it appears that resetting all the permissions using the Whiist instructions apparently fixed the problems. Other than this, the website works very well. I used the "Club" downloads to create the pages and added Adobe Photoshop Elements-created online galleries via links into the Photos Shared Folders. So I'm just down to the permissions thing that disables the site on WHS automatic or manual reboots.

Any help would be appreciated, as I suspect I'm not the only one resetting permissions to keep things running.

Using Whiist 0.8.2, WHS 5.2 SP2.

Update: even without rebooting, removes the permissions about 9am my time every day.
