I was pleasantly surprised to find no perceptible performance hits using such minimal hardware. Even during backups the system shares music with other network stations with no lag issues, etc.

All from Newegg.com. The system looks like HP's OEM unit all self contained with hotswap drives. It is quiet and just works great. Onboard VGA since I don't need anything powerfull. 1.82TB of storage, dual core with 2GB of memory.

I loaded it up with an External DVD/RW thru USB and didn't have a lick of problems. I can't wait for the final release, so far WHS is an awsom product. If it wern't for my home Exchange server I have running, I would dump my AD/Exchange and just run the WHS.

Hello,

I'm using an old DELL GX260. I only replaced the 20Go HD by a 160Go and the CD drive by a DVD burner.

I added 512Mb of memory so my WHS have 768Mb.

WHS works perfectly without any external driver. The sound card is not recognized but I disabled it.

Full size, generic ATX case with one exiting Vantec Stealth case fan. Nice and quite. Minimal power consumption. May put it in the basement or closet if it continues to work dependably.....

Honestly, it works great with this old minimal setup. No lag or issues. Now, once it runs for a spell, I may invest in newer mobo, chip, ram and some sata's. But for now, it cruises just fine for my needs.

No it was not, Highpoint (and Promise as well) had drivers for Win 2003. I took this to be Win 2003 server. I downloaded and installed them. No problem.

I've not had much luck so far!

I had an old twin PIII-768 with 1.25 GB RAM I was pleased to find a use for, but when I hit problems during install discovered that the BIOS has a drive size limit of 128GB, so only saw half the new HDD I'd got for it. Couldn't find an upgrade anywhere.

No matter, I had a P4 2GHz machine with 512MB RAM I'd not used for a while. Fine for 30 seconds, then locked solid. Every time. Changed everything except the board and processor.

Third time unlucky, an old AMD 1.2 GHz machine with 1GB RAM. Did absolutely nothing except power up the drives - not even a waggle on the graphics line.

So... looks like a trip to the local computer fair on Sunday....

I was kinda tempted by one of Dell's cheap server deals, but I already have one decent one, running a couple of virtual servers, and as WHS will only be with us in this form for a little while, it seemed a bit overkill - especially as my main PC is an x64 box and so won't be participating.

I revived some older hardware for the beta program and it has been stable and working well for my needs. I see many people are using fairly high powered hardware for their server but for basic file sharing and backup for 2 users my old dusty parts seem to be up to the task.

The server consists of a 1.2ghz Celeron on a Soyo 7VBA133U board with 512Mb ram.

The main system drive is a 40GB UDMA5 Maxtor drive, and then I added 2 250GB WD SATA drives (dirt cheap!) via Siig raid controller after the install. The controller only supports SATA 1.5.

The lan nics for the server and main desktop machine are DLink DGE530T gigabit adapters connected via DLink DGS1005D switch. By the way this switch is supposed to support jumbo frames, but actually my version apparently does not after experimentation.

Both server and main desktop are multi-homed in an frutile effort to improve network speed. No gateway is specified for either gigabit adapter.

The WAN nics are basic 10/100 cards.

Two other machines are connected via 54Mbs wireless links through a Netgear WGT300N router. One is an old HP desktop tucked away in a downstairs spare bedroom and the other is an HP notebook.

All machines are running XP home and all have backed up on schedule without error for the past 2 weeks.

I am currently using about 300GB of harddrive space for the backups.

iPerf is running on the WHS. From the main desktop I can only manage about 210 Mbs via large .zip file transfer requesting a 256k window. I realize my older server hardware influences this but I'd like some feedback on real world home network speeds.

The desktop is an AMD 64 x2 4200 with 1 GB ram.

Frustratingly, the RAM was bad so I ordered 2GB from Crucial and that is, of course, fine. Installed in one of my old (dead) tower boxes, now hidden away under the desk and purring like a fly (can't hear a thing).

As it only has one IDE channel, once I'd installed WHS I had to switch to the second HDD. I'll get some 500GB SATA IIs later, so that'll give me a couple of Tb to play with!

WHS installed on the first attempt. installed WHS on the IDE drive. all drivers (including SATA) were installed by WHS OS with the exception of the onboard audio driver. initial client computer running WinXP Pro took an hour to backup (~ 12 Gb of files/data). subsequent backups take 2-3 minutes. backup of laptop running WinXP Pro took 12 minutes over ethernet (~ 4Gb of files/data). subsequent backups take about 2 minutes.

I got my invite Friday morning, went to Fry's to grab some parts Saturday afternoon, started the hardware build about 9:00am Sunday morning, the WHS install about 1:00pm and here I am about 5:00pm running my first backup. I didn't see anyone else in this thread with a similar setup so I thought I would post mine in case someone has questions. Personally, I spent probably an hour trying to figure out if my built-in NIC would be compatible before just going with the "what's the worst thing that could happen? Reinstall?" thought. However, everything went flawless.

Why this config? Here's my thought process (or lack thereof).

The processor was a concious decision based on electrical efficiency. If WHS will use the Speed-step capabilities, this will probably draw much less than the 65 watt TDP of the E4300 most of the time. If necessary, I can force it down to 1.2ghz in the BIOS for a 33% (22w) power savings. This efficiency alone over it's useful life should pay for the cost of the processor and mobo combo (which was on sale for $130) over using old hardware. Something to consider if you are redeploying systems with 200+ watt TDP and no Speedstep.

This particular ECS motherboard allows me to use up to 4 existing PATA devices as well as DDR RAM if I had it laying around. It only has two SATA connectors so I'll probably add an extra SATA controller at some point.

The 500gb was a plan B decision when the 160GB on sale for $40 were out of stock. At $120 for the 500gb though, the price seemed right ($.24/gb). I'll add a second drive here shortly to take advantage of the file duplication.

The RAM, PSU, DVD and case were spare. I may replace the RAM with 2GB of 533mhz later if add-ons (WSS?) dictate. The DVD seems spare now that the install is complete but I will probably leave it for the next install. The case seems perfect.

The motherboard has a 4-port Intel SATA2 controller, which I've used, and an additional Marvell 6141 SATA controller which is by far the worst SATA chipset I've ever had the misfortune to come across. It's worse than useless. Hence, the 4-port RAID controller. Only issue I had with said RAID controller is that I needed to format all four of its drives in another machine, otherwise it would only allow me to add the damn things into arrays.

The drive enclosures are pretty cool. I have the two 4-drive ones hooked up, with the 3-drive one used as a spare drive holder. I'll eventually look at replacing the motherboard and CPU with something a little more power-drain friendly down the track, too.

All enclosed within a Sonata II case, it's a headless machine in that I only connect keyboard, mouse and monitor as needed when I cannot operator remotely....

Currently the gigabit card is actually operating at gigabit speeds, I was able to transfer a 4GB file within about a couple of minutes at 50MB/s

It's a little bit tricky for me primarily because of the beta nature of this OS, because I want to store so many things on the server, but with all the upgrades and drive erasures I can't actually use the server beyond a backup box...

My intention is to add probably three 500GB HDDs the next time I see em' for 100 a pop... This is so that I can use the server a means of archiving things.... Stuff I'm more likely to watch will be housed within my HTPC, which has 1TB of drive space, while things I might want to watch, or use will be stored server side.... Of course, I may pull the 160GB out and order four 500GB drives, and use the 160 in my gaming rig to give me a nice 320 JBOD array....

If only WHS supported 64-bit Vista backups

I got the all the hardware for free because a client didn't pay for a DVD burner & repair job.

In the next couple of months I plan on constricting a system that will basically consist of products that will allow for

low power consumption (for prolonged periods of a UPS incase of extended blackouts), low noise,

sufficiant cooling abillities, maximum data throughput (network) & a case small enough to go unnoticed,

but still allow room for storage expansion.

From what I've been reading on these forums, I have a fair idea of what hardware I'm leaning towards.

I'll let you know when I order the parts what I have decided on.

If anyone is in Melbourne, Australia, and would like to dabble in case construction, PM me as I have limited

AMD based stuff will be going on eBay as soon as RC1 is out. I did not like having to install the Nvidia chipset / lan drivers. It just did not seem like they were meant for Windows 2003 server. I had a couple non-reproducable file corruptions occur (reported on connect), which I attribute to flaky storage drivers and / or the cool n' quiet drivers from AMD. I like the fact that the Intel based machine will have either native support or readily available Windows 2003 drivers available from Intel. Also, I am hoping the new Intel based system with the low power Allendale CPU and durable series Gigayte board will consume less power and create less heat than the previous AMD system (which did quite well).

Hopefully Im not wasting too much money...

First time it is not possible to make the NIC working, every time bad driver, from WHS DVD or from other source… After many different way and try, I give up!(I will know later that my PIONEER DVD-ROM make the worst work)

Second time on one later test WHS is working well a couple of day, but it's my working desktop now, I make it back to my working station using the WHS 2nd desktop.......

system drive: 127G dynamic disk on the stripped host drive

2x data drive: 465 dynamic disk on Seagate 500G drives

Of course, I run the risk with the dynamic disks that I could fill up the host drive and the VM will fail expanding them. There's also a perf hit for the dynamic disks. I'm not worried about filling up the drive or the perf hit. I like having the free space on the host's drives to use for short-term storage.

Started off looking at WHS out of curiosity on a "frankenserver" - minimal money spent to get a machine that'd barely meet the minimum requirements - mostly salvaged parts from my "box of bits" in the attic:

However I've been impressed with the RC so far, so much so that I'm now putting together a new-build machine to run it on long term with the OEM version once it's release - currently planning a small form factor setup:

Rolf,

I am having trouble mixing SCSI & PATA drives. I installed on 2 Fujitsu SCSI drives with no problem.

Now I am trying to reinstall with a PATA in the mix.

No luck! The setup hangs with the restart following formatting & copying files. It stops with "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..."

I have tried taking the SCSI's out of the boot sequence. I have tried taking the PATA out of the boot sequence.

No luck! This is driving me crazy. I would really appreciate any tips.

That's about it! It has been working very well as the server, handling backups and file sharing for 6 different PC's, with another two waiting to be added. I'll likely have to upgrade the HDD's in the future, but otherwise, I don't see any need for further upgrades.

Once WHS was installed I tucked the box behind the couch and it's running headless, but within reach of monitor and keyboard cables if something breaks that WHS Console or Remote Desktop can't fix.

While this isn't the place for hardware vendors to be 'touting' their wares, I reckon you are building you systems down to a price by only including an 80gb internal hard drive. Don't forget that this is also the staging area for all files that are being transferred from the clients and you can well lead to size limitations for the prospective transfers.

That is one of the reasons that Microsoft recommend that your system drive should be your largest drive.

Also, are you sure that the Via C7 will be able to cope with a couple of HD streams TO clients at the same time as maybe a couple of other clients are using BitTorrent and ripping a couple of movies?

Another point, relating to another post, as a hardware/software solution vendor, you are going to have to provide a method for your customers to identify all these USB attached drives. I see other companies are managing this, I guess with proprietry solutions, HP are using LED's, how are you going to implement it?

Reading about some of the monster systems people are running makes my "Frankenserver" (so named because the power supply is too large for the micro-ATX case and sticks out the top) seem quite meager.

It's a 1.3GHz AMD Duron on a all-in-one Shuttle micro-ATX motherboard with 512MB PC-133 memory and a generic Realtek-based gigabit NIC. Storage is from a 160GB Seagate ATA-100 drive connected to a Promise Ultra 133 controller as the motherboard doesn't support 48-bit LBA for large drives. I also have a USB2/Firewire card to go in when I'm ready to start expanding storage.

I'm running close to the same motherboard, have the 6150BK8MC from Foxconn with the same 430 chip. I'm trying to load WHS on the RAID 5 just from a usb jump drive and it looks like it takes it then reboots in the text mode of WHS install and after that BSOD. Can you provide a link of what driver version you used of the nvraid? I'm assuming you installed WHS on the RAID 5 as well. If you have any other comments of suggestions on the install process please feel free.

A few years ago I purchased the Intel "Bonham" (S815EBM) m-ATX mobo with a 1U rackmount enclosure. Everything fine except that the whine of the fans and power supply made it unsuitable for polite conversation. So I installed the mobo in an inexpensive Antec minitower, worked on the fans and PS noise levels. Now I have the WHS in the living room and no complaints. Five PC's connected.

I originally built the server to work with BizTalk. BizTalk now needs much more power and memory. So I am looking at a new Xeon mobo.

OK so I decided to look for a lower power option. I got a Dell GX60 that had a 2ghz Celeron replaced it with a 2.8 p4. added a 1 gig of pc3200 and added a sata pci card, had to take off the riser to get the case to close. replaced the HDD with a 500 gig HDD and ran cables for a second 500 gig HDD out the back. Yes the second hdd is sitting on top the case I used double sided sticky tape to secure it. I am going to add a few more 500 gig drives but I don’t want to over load the p.s. So far its running great. And my power bill should be a little better. I am also running u-torrent on this system

My Closet Server (it's really in the closet) is made up of a older Dell Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz minus the original case, with 1gig of Rambus memory and a 300 gig hard drive, all of that is thrown into a free after rebate case (fitting a dell board into a cheap case was a little crazy). The server has been up and running for over six months and still going strong. My next homeserver is going to be custom made downsizing to the smallest form factor possible.

Klode, that sounds like a really neat setup. I love seeing what people can do with less than top-of-the-line equipment and WHS! I posted my system towards the beginning of this thread, but simply put, it's a Dell GX150 in a slimline case (1.0 GHz PIII), 512M RAM, a USB 2.0 add-on card with 4 ports, WD 80 Gb PATA inside and a WD 250Gb external in a USB case. I got the Dell because it was for sale for $100 and I figured when I was finished with WHS I could use it to learn Linux.

So far it's just been used for backup. While I have music stored on it, I haven't really tried pushing it as a media server. I'm thinking I may buy WHS for real when it comes out -- gotta wait and see what the pricing is -- then I'll move the drives to a bigger case with more room to expand. Can't move the motherboard because it uses risers for expansion cards, so it won't fit in a regular case.

Due to the crappy network performace I am getting from this setup, I may be switching out for an Intel board/proc, but for now, this is what I scavanged (minus the storage pool drives):

The board has 2 gigabit ports. One runs off the PCI bus, and another off the PCI-E bus. I've been getting 10 MB/s transfers across my all gigabit network, so I'm not sure if that is because of the ATI chipset on the mobo, but it's getting quite frustrating. Network utilization ping-pongs between 0 MB/s and 30-40 MB/s, with an average over time of 10 MB/s.

Since the question may be at least somewhat germane to a discussion elsewhere in the forums, I have overcome my usual aversion to this sort of "brag list":

My production WHS consists of:

PC Chips M848A motherboard, which was the cheapest thing I could find with Socket A and Windows Server 2003 drivers at the time.
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU, which was left over from a dead system.
1 GB of no-name DDR 266 RAM, also left over.
Assorted internal hard drives, 2x 160 GB and 3x 120 GB, all IDE. All left over from that same dead system. Beginning to see a theme?
Promise SX 4000 lite RAID HBA, Also left over.
No-name PCI gigabit NIC. Not left over, the dead motherboard in the previous system had an integrated gigabit NIC, but the cheap-*ss MB I replaced it with didn't. Chosen because it was cheap, and had Windows Server 2003 drivers available.
The video card doesn't matter because I've never bothered to install a driver for it.
1 external 320 GB USB 2.0 drive, which is a Maxtor in a no-name (oh, look! Another theme!) case.

One 160 GB drive is connected to a MB IDE channel, the other 4 are connected to the Promise HBA.

This server has run flawlessly since February. It is the worst sort of Frankenserver; the additional components I acquired to complete it were selected purely on the bases of cost and physical compatibility with hardware I already had. I gave not a moment's thought to whether inexpensive or old parts might be the right thing to use...

Hello, this is my 1st post on this forum. I take advantage of this post to thank forum participants for all the good stuff I found here.

I've been a happy user of WHS for 2 weeks now. It took me some time to figure out what would be the best hardware to support this server. I ended up buying a "average modern" set of components, and I must admit today I'm happy with my choice:

Before, I would backup my data (from 3 home PCs) by duplicating it on various HDD (external / internal). It was ok but very messy.

Today, all my data is properly backed up in my unique WHS box, and I realize only now how important this box has become in my home network! It is the unique place where all my music/pictures/videos are stored...

That is why I think one should consider what is the main purpose of this box: media sharing, backup, etc.

I would be affraid of running WHS on old HW that could fail anytime.

As far as I'm concerned, I will add a UPS ASAP to add a level of security to my beloved data.

I build and repair my own computers, so I have no fear of using older equipment. I have an old PIII, 733 MB processor, 512 GB RAM and a 40 MB hard drive that I built back when PIIIs were on the market. She's taken a licking from me, was donated to a friend who didn't have money for a new computer, came back to me when I "upgraded" the same friend to a P4, 2.4 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive. She still has her original copy of Windows XP onboard, and still works great.

I have a 3.2 GHz P4 setup, this Dual Core 2 Duo 6400 setup and a 2.4 GHz processor laptop. All except the laptop have various older parts in them, since I don't throw away anything I can still use. Each time I upgrade, if the DVD/CD drives are still current, I keep them active. I even have an old Zip Drive in this Core 2 Duo machine and it works!

I did put a brand new hard drive in the Dell Dimension I'm using for WHS, but the rest of it is fine. Besides, I do keep my most important stuff on DVD and/or CD, as well as on both my computer and the server.

With the exception of 2 hard drives, I built my WHS using discards. I have an extremely limited discretionary budget. When I first saw this thread I was ashamed to post about in this thread, but what the heck; some should get a good laugh.

Mobo: ECS L4VXA2 REV 1.0 A (BIOS Version is 1.1e, newest from ECS site)

CPU: 2 GHz P4

RAM: 1 GB PC2600 DDR

HDD Controller: SIIG S4v010028917 which WHS sees as CMD PCI-0649 Ultra DMA IDE controller. It is working, I’m not going to try to fix it.

HDDs:
2 Seagate 320 GB HDD ST320620A (both on Mobo IDE 1)
Western Digital 40 GB HDD WDC WD400BB-32CL0 (on HDD Controller channel 1)
Western Digital 40 GB HDD WDC WD400JB-00ENA0 (on HDD Controller channel 1)

Optical Drives:
Pioneer CDD DVD-ROM DVD-106 (on Mobo IDE 2)
Philips CDD4851 CD-R/RW (on Mobo IDE 2)(I’m not sure why I put it in, it was there. I figure it is better to have it and to want it than want it and not have it.)

Video: nVidia GeForce FX 5200 256 MB Display adapter.

NIC: onboard NIC VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Sound: onboard Vinyl AC’97

CASE: The case is no great shakes. It has 4 exposed 5 ¼ 2 exposed 3 ½ and 2 internal 3 ½ inch bays. Two of the 4 HDDs are mounted in the 5 ¼ bays and one of those is pretty much unsupported (only mounted on 1 edge). There is 1 rear panel fan. The hot spot it where the WD drives are mounted; they are running 120° F. Clearly I need a new case. I’ll be looking for something with low velocity high volume fans, 6-8 internal 3 ½ inch bays (with their own cooling).

Power Supply: No markings I can see, I’ll replace it with an Antec 80 plus power supply with PF correction.

Supermicro X5DAL-TG2 mobo with 2 x 3.06GHz P4 Xeon CPUs and 4GB RAM

Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 8-port PCI-X SATA controller

I cabled the two on-mobo SATA ports to two of the drive bays to use for my system disk... I run two x 250GB Maxtor SATA drives in RAID 1 (mirrored) using the on-mobo SiI3112 RAID controller

The other eight bays are cabled to the 8-port controller for data drives... bays are currently filled with eight x 1TB Seagate SATA drives

Add 5 in 3 SATA backplane to mainsystem and increase drives to 6 total.

SATA controllers do not need to be RAID able as I intend to stay with WHS.

I'd love to see a picture of this build... maybe that is a new thread: "show your whs!" lol

Maybe I'm too simple, but this seems like an amazing build...

Just recently completed final set up of my system. (final for now)

Antec 900 case with 3 120mm front intake fans blowing onto 9 drives and a 220mm and 120mm exhaust fans.

ASUS motherboard taken out from HP A1600n system

AMD 3800+

550 watt power supply

1 gig ram (2x512)

3 x 500 gb Seagate sata drives

2 x 500 gb Maxtor pata drives

4 x 750 gb Seagate pata drives

*Total capacity: 5.5 GB in drive manufacturers world and 5 GB in computer world. 52% currently filled.

SIIG UltraATA 133 PCI controller card. PC won't boot with 750gb drives connected to it but works fine with 500gb or smaller drives.

Linksys 1 gigabit network card.

CyberPower 1200 UPS

WHS is connected to DLink DIR-655 gigabit router, servicing 3 laptops and 1 imac, all wireless and have no problem so far streaming video and music to multiple devices at once.

5 case fans are using 5,6 watts of power but make a world of difference in cooling. all drives are never hot to the touch and are luke warm to touch at most. I absolutely recommend Antec 900 case for running WHS. Drives in my previous case with 1 120mm exhaust fan were running scorching hot. total system power use approximately 175 watts at peak and 145 watts at idle, so it's no green machine by any means.

Have 1 sata port and 1 PCI port free for future external drive expansion.

Cool feature I gave it: install a modem, and use it to do CallerID announcements over the network. 'Twas a PITA to figure out how to run YAC (the CallerID server program) as a serivce, rather than as a startup program; but, it works.

I'm planning on ordering an Antec SmartCool 92mm fan to replace the stock 80mm case fan. It makes a GOB of noise and, running at app. 70 W total power disipated, is almost unnecessary.

The CPU, mobo, and memory all border on overkill for a WHS machine, but I was thinking that I wanted to protect against the possibility of WHS not panning out and the machine getting re-purposed to something else.

If I'd been trying to minimize cost, I probably would have gone the Sempron route, say an LE-1100, 1GB or even 512MB memory, maybe not even dual channel and surely slower, and the Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 motherboard. That might have saved maybe $60 or $70. The hard disk drives cost $876.

For "green" purposes, I wish the case had a lower capacity 80+ power supply with power factor correction. It's running at a power factor just over 0.5. Not so good...

Case and PSU

I have bought a large tower case, the Chieftec BA-02B-B-B Uni Full Tower Chassis. The case is large and has room for expansion, up to 10 3.5 inch drives, before converting the 5.25 inch bays. Also with 4 or 5 fans, hopefully things should run cool. As I want limited restrictions on the number of hard drives, I also invested in a PSU that comes complete with 8 SATA power connections, hopefully that will be enough to begin with. I chose upon recommendation the Corsair HX620w 620w Modular PSU.

Motherboard/CPU/RAM

I realise that the Motherboard and CPU does not need to be highly specified for a WHS box. However my recent HTPC is an AMD X2 based processor, the 4800 and at times it can struggle with the demands I place on it. As such I would like to replace this CPU with one with more oomph and use this CPU for my WHS. Consequently Iam limited to an AMD Processor

I also want the freedom to add as many SATA drives as possible, and ideally leaving my PCL cards free for future expansion. As such I would prefer a Motherboard with 6 or more SATA connections, an E-SATA connection and even onboard graphics…

Back to reality… I have found one mother board with 9 SATA connections, one E-SATA, 10 USB ports that will accept my existing CPU, but no onboard graphics. The Mb is an ASUS M2N32 WS PRO and is about £100. Over specified I know but I am aware of the possible SATA connection issue in the future.

Looking around, the only motherboards that I have currently found with onboard graphics tend to have only 4 SATA connections and rarely an E-SATA port.. By the time I have invested in additional PCL cards, the prices almost matches the Asus, though on top of that I have to invest in a cheap and cheerful graphics card.

The CPU for the HTPC will become the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8GHz) Socket CPU and the 4800 version will find its way into the WHS.

2 GB of RAM as it is cheap, and will allow future expansion

Hopefully this system may well be over specified at the moment but who knows what plans Microsoft has for the next version of WHS, if there's going to be one? I have read and heard talk of it allowing for centralised TV tuners that can be streamed to multiple media players around the home, and I'm sure there are other funky ideas too.

I hope this answers those questions regarding my WHS specs. The initial install will have two 500 GB drives, two 750 drives and possibly a couple of other drives that I have floating around.

I deceided to keep it simple(i just built a quad core rig) shuttle SS21T AMA 64 x2 4500+ 1 gig of ram 3 WD 500g drives. Runs real nice.(Shuttle barebone was a PITA to get going, Tight squeeze fan...etc) What the average transfer rate from comp to server? I'm getting 900 KB/sec

Am trying to decide which HDD's to use:

Am thinking of 2 x 500 GB Seagate IDE (will probably need an IDE card to recognize the bigger drives)

Question:

I see there are available SATA cards available; would I be better off to use SATA rather than IDE ?
Is there a better chance of getting the 500 GB IDE working vs the 500 GB Sata drives ?

Will Sata make any difference over IDE in terms of performance on this lowly system ?

This WHS box is surprisingly quiet (it is on my desktop now and I can only hear the drives tickle now and then) and power usage is a fair 70W continuesly.

WHS base installation took about 2 hours without any propblems.

It is backing up 3 local workstations (2xXP, 1xVista) and 1 VPC XP (test) environment, serving 2 additional old W2K systems. Also WHS is running two external foto websites.

WHS Server storage load is about 55%.

Running perfectly stable for almost 5 weeks now.

I found out that it will boot without a video card installed. It runs great and backups are taking about 5 minutes a day. Loading pictures in a slide show seems to be as fast as a local drive on any PC on the network.

I tried converting my Abit IN9 32max w/e6600 in an Antec P180b case into my WHS, but I was having issues with the nvidia 680i chipset I think. Kept getting disk errors in the event viewer and other issues like lockups. Had a ton of hard drives so I wanted something that just worked.

So:

As I'm going to be using this as a main file store for pictures, music etc for all other machines in the house, I need availability hence using server hardware and hardware mirroring.

Haven't measured power consumption yet but adding up the parts including the 65% efficient PSU I reckon it should be about 50w idle. It will be in my workshop so heat generated is not really wasted anyway!

Have installed RMClock to enable the deeper CxE states to reduce idle consumption. Power management is set to server balanced. And BIONIC is configured to run over-night using my night-rate electricity.

This CPU seems really efficient, compared to my previous P4 630 anyway. Proliant has a decent heat-pipe heat sink with two fans in a push-pull config, but running at minimum speed (automatically) at idle CPU cores are 23*C (20*C room temp), jumps up to 35*C with BIONIC running mind, but no increase in fan speed, desernably at least. Maximum fan speed is astonishing!

My first attempt at WHS ended with a dead MoBo.Installed OK but after about 12 hours the asus p4c-800 refused to reconise the new sata hard drives.Dead southbridge chip.These socket 478 boards being obsolete I am forced to go to a socket775 setup so I have an overkill core 2 duo chip , asus p5b mobo, ddr2 memory and pci-e vid card all on their way.Held up by holiday shipping but hoping to get started again this weekend.Should run good.

Not necessarilly overkill, bear in mind a core-2 CPU properly configured will use a lot less power than an old skt.478 so may just about pay for itself over say 3 years.

So I just used some parts I had. Only thing I did buy was a case, psu, and the 500GB hard drive. I don't mind the speed of the NIC since I wont be streaming anything.

I'm in process of building a machine. It's going to be a QUAD XEON 1.5ghz with 12gb of ram. (yes i know it does not support 12gb of ram but will be inside a vm with 3.5gb). and will have 14x 750gb Seagate Scsi disks.

The machine will be running Vmware ESX 3.0.2 as the base os. and then will have 3 Windows 2003 Servers and 1 WHS

WHS will have 5 disks dedicated to it.

Should be a nice and fast box once it's setup. The chassis is going to be a ibm x255.

Your post gave me some Ideas on how I want to go. I been thinking of a rack-mount server using an Intel server card "Intel Xeon Server Boards w/ 800 FSB"

Q.Why use a Server board in stead of an retro- P2 or P3

A. Well I read many post in this thread and most seam to be using older system with 'WHS' with good and bad results.

If WHS is a water down version of Win Server 2003 why not use a MoBo designed to work with as a "server" and

not a desktop PC.

But there still the unknown of if "WHS" would run with a over the top system. Am I building a Ferrari based a Volkswagen engine? There also the RAID problem "WHS" wasn't design to run with this type of HDD setup but I read a few who have gotten it to work.

This is my thoughts for a "WHS" system. What do you think, is this allot of expensive junk or the design of a KILLER SYSTEM?

Any helpful thought from any one reading this post would be helpful.

Pulled DVD after install and used last IDE for final hard drive. 1.80 Terabytes online, 550 Gigs free at the moment, so far so good, about 14 days into 120 day Evaluation. Currently backing up 2 XP Pro Machines, 2 Vista 32bit Ultimate Machines, Pictures, Music and Videos. Peace of mind at having 4 Machines backup up at all times without any user intervention is worth its weight in gold, best $6.24 I have spent in alongtime. Streaming videos out to 2 different Xbox 360's and I have to say, very impressive.

I built a server for the Beta, then switched to SBS then have reinstalled the OEM WHS.

So far I think its great.

But I soon realised I have made a mistake.

So if you are planning a server now...

Try and avoid the following frustrating errors:

Firstly... case size... I thought I wanted a small server to fit on my rack at home. I purchased a 2U rackmount case with PSU without really investigating it properly.

As it can only take 3 Har Drives... a woefully inadequate amount for anyone using WHS in anger.

I am now looking at a Chnebro 4U 20 Drive case to replace it. I know I wont fill it up very soon, or be able to afford the multilane controllers yet but at least I wont have to rebuld it again. I hope.

Secondly... SATA interfaces.. The motherboard I purchased only has 4 SATA ports. And though that seems great at the time.. it leaves with few upgrade choices. 4 drives is just not enough.

Thirdly to expand on the second, to enable a multilane controller, or more than one to be installed requires PCI-express slots. And again the motherboard I purchased didnt have a PCI-express slot spare for a single controller let alone 2.

These of themselves do not prevent me having a great time with WHS but they do limit is expansion. And I'd rather spend my time doing other things rather than rebuilding a server every six months.

So to recap..

Get the largest case you can with the most internal storage options.

Get a motherboard with as many SATA sockets and eSATA on the back panel.

Get a motherboard with as many PCI-express (more than x1) slots as you can.

I wish i had.

My WHS as of 12/25/07 rev c

With the exception of 3 hard drives, and the Lian-Li EX-23, I have built my WHS using discards. I have an extremely limited discretionary budget.

Mobo: ECS L4VXA2 REV 1.0 A (BIOS Version is 1.1e, newest from ECS site)

CPU: 2 GHz P4

RAM: 1 GB PC2600 DDR

HDD Controller: SIIG S4v010028917 which WHS sees as CMD PCI-0649 Ultra DMA IDE controller. It is working, I’m not going to try to fix it.

HDDs:

1 Seagate 500 GB HDD ST3500630A (both on Mobo IDE 2)
2 Seagate 320 GB HDD ST3320620A (both on Mobo IDE 1)
Western Digital 40 GB HDD WDC WD400BB-32CL0 (on HDD Controller channel 1)
Western Digital 40 GB HDD WDC WD400JB-00ENA0 (on HDD Controller channel 1)

Optical Drives:
Pioneer CD DVD-ROM DVD-106 (on Mobo IDE 2)
~~Philips CDD4851 CD-R/RW (on Mobo IDE 2)(I’m not sure why I put it in, it was there. I figure it is better to have it and to want it than want it and not have it.)~~

Video: nVidia GeForce FX 5200 256 MB Display adapter.

NIC: onboard NIC VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Sound: onboard Vinyl AC’97

CASE: The case is no great shakes. It has 4 exposed 5 ¼ 2 exposed 3 ½ and 2 internal 3 ½ inch bays. ~~Two of the 4 HDDs are mounted in the 5 ¼ bays and one of those is pretty much unsupported (only mounted on 1 edge).~~ I installed a Lian-Li EX-23 into two of the exposed 5.25 bays. It houses the 3 Seagate drive and provides cooling for them and it was far less expensive than a new case. There is 1 rear panel fan. The hot spot it where the WD drives are mounted; they are running 120° F. ~~Clearly I need a new case. I’ll be looking for something with low velocity high volume fans, 6-8 internal 3 ½ inch bays (with their own cooling).~~

Power Supply: ~~No markings I can see, I’ll replace it with an Antec 80 plus power supply with PF correction~~. The power supply has been replaced with an Antec EA 500. I didn’t need a 500 Watt supply for the thing, but it was a gift. It reduced the power consumed by almost 10 Watts and changed the power factor from 0.57 to 0.98.

(had an issue installing drivers for it as Intel don't support server OS on desktop boards and their driver quick install program refused to work: solved by bypassing the quick-install and using the setup.exe for the actual driver)

Housed in Lian Li PC-A16 - was planning to use some removable HDD caddies I had lying around so needed lots of 5.25" bays (9 in total) but they're too wide to fit unfortunately. Still, lots of expansion room and fits perfectly on the shelf in my printer trolley. Stock fans are whisper quiet.

Also bought a D-Link DIR-655 router and ran CAT5e cabling for Gig-E to WHS.

I tried the RC1 and Eval versions on an older Acer box (LEELA), with 1GB RAM, a P4 2.66GHz CPU and an 80GB HDD.

Happy with the way things went, I built myself a new machine for the System Builder edition. (BENDER)

I am using the Cooler Master iTower 930 case, which has 4 SATA Hot-swap bays, and also 4x iCute iSwap SATA Hot-swap bays.

Gigabyte GA-G33-DS3R M/b - G33, 1333MHz FSB, Dual DDR2-1066 (onboard Intel G3100 GPU)

I also installed a 2 Port PCI SATA150 card for eSATA

Plus a proper Socket-775 heatsink (with a screw-down bracket) I'm in for the long-haul, and don't trust the plastic clips of the stock Intel cooler (too fiddly)

The CPU may be a bit excessive, but I'm probably gonna keep this configuration for at least 5 years. (plus the price was right)

Must say I am loving the Windows Home Server which I am mostly using to stream movies to the 360, slowly getting to grips with the built in functionality, just added the virtual server to the machine to make sure a client is always available from remote purposes. Using a virtual machine I can also have programs like tversity running which has given me a some problems running under whs.

Did have one problem with the HP Proliant, the bios settings seemed to be a bit nerfed, had to remove the usb drive boot option as a usb drive would prevent it from booting, also enabled the 32bit mode on the sata drives which has greatly improved the drives preformances, also enable the virtualisation support on the processor which was disabled by default.

I would love the ability to add ports to the automatically opening upnp/web ports. Cant wait to try the vpn (if it will work) and sharepoint services (might need more ram).

2nd Storage Disk - 500GB WD 5000AAKS (16MB Cache) - removed from my WD Mybook enclosure when I realised I was running out of space.

CD/DVD Writer - Liteon DH201A1S18C

And would recommend it to anyone. The whole thing is very quiet, much quieter than my desktop machine. Case has enough scope for future hard disk upgrades as required, either via the 3.5" bays or can re-appropriate the 5.25" via some adapters easily enough.

Motherboard supports PCI-E too, has basic onboard graphics, 4xSATA, gigabit LAN (need to install a driver to get LAN working though once built the O/S)

Just playing about a little at the moment trying to get it to serve up movies to my 360 (which it doesn't seem to want to play back at present) so I can ditch my Xbox 1 running XBMC.

Also running Ninan (NZB handler) as a service so I can just drop downloads over to the server to handle.

This is what I've used since beta. You really don't need much more CPU power than this, and dual-proc P3s (especially Cumine) are a dream to work with. I leave it in the closet next to me and I barely hear the fan, occasionally hear the HD spin up (gotta figure out what's causing it), and works like a champ.

My WHS is Dell OptiPlex GX260 box with

Onboard 100mbs LAN + Onboard AGP display adapter
6x USB 2.0 ports

I have 2x external IDE bays with 1x 20GB and 1x 40GB HDD, that i'm planning to add later as those data corruption bugs get fixed. So far, its working quite well with only on HDD with about 50% filled with my data on shares.

Its a bit budget configuration, but as i pass through the eval time and i hope at that time bugs will be fixed as well, then, i'll be adding some good HDDs to my box

With the low power Athlon 64 CPU, this is one quiet system. I have to look at the lights on the front to tell it's running. So far it's been powerful enough though I may have to reconfigure later as I plan to add Diskeeper 2008 for WHS which runs in the background and will place more demands on the CPU. Fortunately, this one was ultra cheap so I wouldn't be upset replacing it! I'll also be adding another hard disk in the near future.

WHS up and running!

Intel E4600 Core 2 Duo CPU (65W, using Intel-supplied fan)
ASUS P5B-VM micro ATX mobo (4 SATA ports, 1 e-SATA port, onboard VGA + Gigabit LAN)
2 GB Crucial RAM (DDR2, 800MHz)
Lite-On 16x IDE DVD-ROM (didn't have a floater or one I could pry free)
2 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives
Ultra Products Micro-Fly case (w/600W PS) - will hold 2 more internal HDs (4 total)

System runs ~26.5 Celsius -- measured at the CPU fan -- and is sufficiently quiet (mobo BIOS fan speed set to "ultra quiet").

Chose to step up CPU-wise from the Celeron (35W) to the CPUs consuming 65W in order to ensure more headroom for coming applications. In that range, I concluded that the E4600 gave me the best price-performance tradeoff.

Plan to add print-server drivers, and SlimServer to the server next.

My only difficulties (thus far) were with the install instructions -- had to "decode" the command script of the final sysprep clean-up step to get it the command syntax right -- and deciding at what point in the process to install drivers from the ASUS-supplied CD.

Overall, I am more than satisfied with my hardware choices. More importantly, I am impressed by WHS's "thought-through" functionality and its stability.

I have an Intel mini-ITX motherboard with a soldered on Celeron 215 (1.33GHz). It has 1GB of PC2-5300 RAM. I have 2 500 GB Seagate IDE HD's and with a generic IDE add in card I had laying around I added 4 HD's I also had laying around for a total of 1.5 TB of storage. For a case I got a Cooler Master Centurion 541, which is odd as I have 5 Centurion 5 cases surrounding it....

I plan on moving it to a Centurion 5, adding 2 more 500 GB drives, removing the 4 random drives. I also plan on adding 2 USB 1TB drives, but putting them IN the case. Most likely will get some type of drive bay for easy access of the drives, and for better cooling.

Everything is working well except for the constant disk activity. I can't work with it in the same room. It was so noisey in the other room, my wife complained and that's why I upgraded to a quieter case.

The other issue that's disappointing is that I am not using it as a central file server, only a backup server, because of the data corruption issue. Even without that issue I found that it did not server music or movie files smoothly to my Vista PC. I have used it to do multiple hard drive restores on my other PCs and I am very happy about that.

I'm looking forward to the next upgrade and the fix to the data issues.

I'm using the Promise Sata300 TX4. It's been installed and running fine from the build. I have 4 drives on the MB and 4 drives on the Promise TX4. The drivers are available for download from the promise.com web site. I just checked and I'm not sure I'm using the latest ones as they have a release date of 10/30/2007 posted on there and I'm sure my server was built before 10/2007. I think I'm using the ones dated 4/8/2005. But I think you should try the latest ones.

I know the CPU is overkill, but I hope to be able to use the WHS system as a PVR someday...

The ECS mobo was "free" (bundled with the CPU), and it's worth about what I paid for it. I discovered there are no Win2003 drivers for it, so I plan to replace it soon. It's running, but the on-board LAN port doesn't work (but since it's only Fast Ethernet (100MB) I don't much care). I added a cheap Gigabit PCI card, but my network performance is not very good.

Once I move all the data off the drives (still have another 500GB to go) I'm removing Win2K3 R2 and replacing with WHS. This is the actual hardware I am using now, here's my plan for my WHS system.

I hope to keep each array separate from each other and not use the "MS extended drive" stuff. I have the drives, the controllers to do actual RAID that is a mature technology and well known. I've never really felt secure with Microsofts nebulous extended drive.

I was part of the Beta team for WHS and came out of the program a little disappointed that there wasn't better integration with MediaCenter PCs (either MCE 2005 or Vista WMC) so I dropped WHS and went back to Win2K3. Now that there are a few WHS add ins that integrate Media Centers better so I'm back in the fold. See I currently have 4 (3 Vista WMC and 1 MCE 2005, 4 digital and 6 analog tuners between them all) MediaCenters. I've been able to share Recorded TV shares across my entire home network and watch/listen form anywhere. The problem was always the fact that MetaData was only viewable on the machine that recorded it. Now with WHS and the My TV add in I can use any MediaCenter PC to watch any show and get all the Metadata! There's also another add in called My Movies that does similar for my movies (although I haven't tried it). Good thing I have a sixteen port RAID card AND case! I may have to move my other 3TB array (from my other Win2K3 file server) into the WHS server to use that add in though.

[EDIT] Big steaming hunk of dog doo. Will have to rethink the WHS implementation. For whatever reason, the hardware that has run Win2K3 R2 flawlessly for a very long time cannot seem to run for a day on WHS without crashing over and over. Put the original Win2K3 main HD back in and it runs flawlessly again. Used all the same driver versions and all hardware between the two systems. BAH!

Also, I can install Win2K3 R2 on a SATA drive (Toshiba MK1252GSX). Trying to do the same on the exact same model HD under WHS nets a continous reboot cycle. Double BAH!

Gigabit lan card

The only problem I had using older hardware was issues wioth trying to use a SATA card. For some reason I couldn't get the drivers to load off the floppy disk, so I used a IDE drive as my sys drive and I had no problems.

I was using a Althon XP 2400+ system, but the power supply on it popped and apparently killed the motherboard too. :(

I just ordered a new system for under $300 which includes:
Intel Atom 330 w/ Intel D945GCLF2 Mobo
Corsair 400W Power Supply - which is way overkill, but for $23.99 after Mail in Rebate, I didn't see a point in getting something else, that and it'll support lots of HDD's when I need more storage.
G.SKILL 2 GB RAM
Sony DVD Drive
Thermaltake VF6000BNS - I wanted to get a smaller case, but they only supported one optical and one hard drive. I need to be able to cram at least 2 HDD's in there, and no doubt more in the future.

I'll use the 2 x 250GB WD drives I currently have (hopefully they still work.) This system should only use around 40-50 watts though, and I was mainly going for power efficiency.

Started out with an Intel Celeron 420 1.6ghz and 1gb of RAM, but the hardware was bottlenecking on my network activity with 2-3 in house networked computers, an xbox 360, and a PS3 accessing it, and multiple users grabbing files from the internet with my 20 down and 20 up FIOS connection. Now, HUGE difference!

Has been running for over 14 months with no issues. Used to back up 1 PC, 1 Media Centre and 4 laptops. Easily Streams HD (1080p) movies to my media centre at the same time as backups are running and torrents downloading.

At idle it uses ~45Watts and averages 60Watts - most of this is the HDD's. Happy to leave it running 24/7 as it only consumes 500kwh per year.

Have any of you with server spec machines checked how much power they are using?

My WHS with 11 drives is currently averaging around 200 watts, which I believe is costing me about 35 cents a day or $10 a month for 24/7 operation. Not a huge expense for what it does.

Hi - so thats around 1800kwh per year to run the server which personally I would consider to be a little too much for a 'home' based system.

Here in the UK that would cost in the region of £200 per year to run (or $300 or so) which is quite a lot

I don't know if it will run on WHS, but a benchmarking program like Sandra might be worth a run through. Your system far exceeds the required and recommended hardware levels so you shouldn't have any problems. Also, check your network throughput. It could be a problem with something on the network as well.

4GB of DDR2 (will drop to 2GB when I find a good deal and send the pair of 2Gb sticks to my 64bit HTPC)
Two 1.5TB Seagates (Lord help me!)
Room for fifteen more internal drives!!!!

I imagine that I will start adding 2TB WDs in the Spring. That would leave a maximum internal capacity of around 33TB.

Luckily I work at a great company that sells there unused equipment. Got the server and keyboard setup for under $100 but did have to add extra memory and the 2 500GB drives. The server still has over a 1/2 year of warranty.
