Errors after install of PP1. Everything OK?

Following reboot after PP1 install I get the following errors:

From system log:

1. Preserver service failed during startup (Application popup)

From homeserver log

2. Unexpected error 0x0 from DEUtilInitializeSecurity: The operation completed successfully. (EventID 130)

3. Process whsarch failed at d:\wssg_src\whs_v1se\qhs\src\storage\de\deutil\deutil.cpp(248). (EventID 132)

4. Unexpected error 0x780 from CreateFile on D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\Commit.dat: The file can not be accessed by the system EventID 272)

5. Client Backup server failed at d:\wssg_src\whs_v1se\qhs\src\backup\util\diskfile.cpp(145) (EventID 267)

I'm not sure if everything is OK right now, would be nice if anyone from WHS team could comment on these errors

When I click on the link for the connector once at http://server:55000, it tries and fails to open:

What drive and which directory is this supposed to refer to?

I've been fighting this for about a week now. Put PP1 on about two weeks ago. My XP Pro machine backed up fine, but couldn't get console to work (wrong version). Unistalled connector on pc, tried to reinstall with setup.exe in software folder on WHS under connector folder. Getting 'C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC_32\System.EnterpriseServices\2.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\System.EnterpriseServices.dll' after setting up web.config on server. Of course since I don't have console working, it won't backup. Any ideas?

PP 1 Install but Connector install issues on XP Home system

PP1 install went fine on server and other Vista Ultimate system in the network. When installing connector update on the XP Home system. Asked to uninstall first and then reinstall. Reinstall seemed to proceeed okay until error message that install could not find the WHS server.

Deleted the install file and went to WHS Server on Network in software folder to setup from there but same error message.

What am I doing wrong or is this an XP Home issue?

Cannot install home server connector - files not downloaded from home server

I have installed hte power pack no problem and got to the :5000 and downladed the installer.

When I try to run the installer however it gets stuck on downloading files from VAULT 0% then eventually goes to an error page:

The files were not downloaded from your home server.

I have tried this lots of times on 4 different machines, I get the same problem each time.

Anyone else having this issue?

How do I fix it?

It's really annoying as I get the warning messages popping up on all my machines now saying that I must install a new connector.

I have strictly followed the install guide but a receive back a message "Not enough disk space to install the PP".
My C drive has 2 partitions (set-up by HP). No way to modify this? How to solve this?

If you receive a permissions denied error while running the update:

Please copy the update package to your Windows Home Server desktop and try running it from there. If this does not work, please right click on the file on the desktop and select properties.

Once in the file properties, you should see the option to unblock the file. After the file is unblocked, you should be able to install.

Power Pack 1 Setup Error

I'm trying to install Power Pack 1 on my fully up-to-date WHS. I've followed the instructions in the Public Beta Release ver. 0.9 exactly, and every time I try to run the WHS-KB944289-v1-x86-ENU.exe file, it unpacks the files, then give me a "KB44289 Setup Error: This Update can only be installed once server setup has completed" dialog box...then the setup routine stops and kicks me back to the Windows Home Server Admin Console. I've tried restarting the server and all the computers on the network. Same error, every time. Anyone else getting this, or have gotten it and worked it out?

Zune software eating all available memory and page file under PP1

Hi everyone, I have searched all over and can't find this anywhere but on the Zune forums:

That is my post about 12 replies down. I've used Zune software with vista for over a year now and no trouble at all. After installing PP1 3 days ago and bringing my other 3 drives online, I put on my favorite playlist. My WMA's are stored in the shared music folder on the WHS (HP Mediasmart).

By the third song, my mouse got all jumpy, frequent vista circle, etc. I pulled up the task manager and zune.exe was hogging about 1.4gig of memory. I had to count the zero's to make sure since I have never seen that many numbers on task manager before.

I think it's more than coincidental that this problem starts after the WHS pp1, and is also present on my wife's notebook. I dont know that it's really a WHS bug and reportable though since I can't absolutely prove it's WHS unless I move all 12gigs of music off the server, turn if off, and fire up Zune? I'm a little new to this beta testing thing, just trying to do my part to make this thing work great.

I am running media player 11 right now, for the past hour and a half and it is holding steady at 44k memory used...

WHS console shows last update as xx/xx/xx... and won't update...

I've had a HP MediaSmart Home Server for about 8 months. For as long as I can remember, I've never had an HP update applied and the Last Update date shows XX/XX/XX. When clicking the Install or Check for Updates, nothing would be reported. There were no real bad errors... only what appears to be a script error dialog when I opened up the console on a member machine.

So then PP1 comes out (not the beta) which I download from MSFT and install. I hoped that had fixed some stuff, but no luck. The wierd thing is all my clients reported they needed the updated WHS client and my x64 Vista clients are updating just fine.

Under the Hardware Status, my HP Media Smart server shows v1.1.1.14470 and the BIOS is R02, 7/13/2007. All the versions listed on the Resources tab show 6.0.1800.0.

I know these aren't the right versions... how can I "reset" my WHS to make it update?

64bit Vista can't connect to console

Server upgraded and 64bit Vista client connector installed. I've kicked off a manual backup which seems to be working fine so far (3% done) but I can't connect to the WHS console. It gives me an error:

This computer cannot connect to your home server. Check your network connection and make sure your home server is powered on. If your home server has recently restarted, try again in a few minutes.

I've rebooted both server and client, but get the same, even when the backup is running and a connection is clearly there.

Any suggestions?!

WHS PP1 (RTM) Hangs on HP EX475 with dual 500GB HDD and third 1TB drive

Prior to the RTM release of PP1 I did not experience any problems like I am about to describe

Now that the RTM version of PP1 has been released I decided to reset my EX475 back to factory defaults and do a rebuild from the bare metal up.

I now have a PP1 based server with only the 2 add ins which come with PP1 which are the Norton package and the PV Media server

I have installed the HP Mediasmart update.

What appears to happen is the server will start up normally and then after about a variable period of time hang and not allow any browsing of either shares or web pages. However the device still responds to a ping and there are no worrying lights on the front of the unit.A telnet to port 80 gets a response of invalid verb (to be expected)

I have downloaded and run the diagnostic tool but it can't seemt to connect so the results are fairly meaningless.

It appears to happen when ripping music to the shared folders using WMP11 which I'm assuming is supported (rather than ripping to a local hard disk on the client and then copying)

The problem is the same from multiple clients so I believe the problem is at the server end

Any suggestions on how to diagnose this further?

Server Storage displays "Calculating Sizes" forever

Since update to Power Pack 1 Beta the Home Server Console, Server Storage tab does not calculate Available Storage. I just get the green moving bar.

I don't know whether it is related by I do have a drive under 'Storage Hard Drives' in the 'Not Added' status that only give the 'Remove' option. When I try and remove it I get the message "There is not enough space on your server...." Anyone know who to remove a rogue disk?

Been having problems with my Home Server lately. The Backup service has not been running. I have tried everything in the Knowledge Base article to resolve that issue except for completely deleting all my existing backups.

I am wondering if PP1 will even install with the Backup Service not running? Will it cause even further problems?

Hi All,

I've installed PP1 and updated the Connector software - all went without incident except once completed my WHS machine reports "backup service not running". I've gone through all of the listed troubleshooting steps up to and including the Backup Database Repair; the Backup DB Repair completes and reports that all is well and the backup service is running.... except it is NOT. (Actually, when I check services, the WHSbackup service IS running, and I've tried stopping and restarting the service, reinstallation of the Connector software, multiple DB Repairs, and multiple reboots of the machine.

So I'm stuck and I'm looking for any possible solution short of wiping the machine and doing a complete rebuild. I've searched forums and Google and not found that this is a "common" issue in the context of PP1, but mostly older references to pre-PP1 when DB consistency was a more manual affair. Great, so one of the benefits of PP1 is supposed to be improving how to manage consistency errors and instead has created one!

Any input greatly appreciated.

Uploading photo's to Photo Webshare requires a mapped drive?????

I don't think I'm doing something wrong but I'm blown away that when I try to add photo's to the Photo's Webshare using the Upload Photo's/Upload Tool, none of the photo folders from the WHS are displayed. I have to go to Windows and map the photo, video and music folders so I can select them and add a photo. This doesn't make sense. Is it a bug that's going to be fixed or am I doing something wrong?

Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) errors

After the install of PP1 I'm getting the "Conflicts" error message.

When bringning up the detail, its telling me ther are CRC errors on about a dozen or so mp3 files.

Not sure how to resovle these. I can't even delete the files as WHS thinks they are still in use/open.

Suggestions?

Trouble uninstalling PP1 RC4

I'm trying to install the final release of PP1 and am having problems uninstalling what I'm fairly sure was the RC4 version. There is no pre-release version in the add/remove programs and when I attempt to install the new PP1 final release, I get the message that it's already installed.

For some background, in June I downloaded and installed what I think was RC4 but here are the confusing factors:

1. There is no evidence of pre-release, RC or final version of PP1 in my add/remove programs on the server

2. Computer properties on the server shows Windows Home Server - Service Pack 2

3. The June downloaded file (that I thought was RC4) has the same name as the current release (WHS-KB944289-v1-x86-ENU.exe)

4. The home server console>settings>resources shows "Windows Home Server Power Pack I" (nothing about pre-release) and everything under the version information is version 6.0.1771.0.

This is a home built system that has run flawlessly from inception. Any insight on what's going on would be greatly appreciated.

Folder duplication when 1 drive is empty

After I added a new drive to my system I ended up with 3 drives at about 97%+ full and one drive that was completely empty. After dragging data to the new drive I then turned on folder duplication and got an error that not enough drives were found with free space.

I figured WHS would copy duplicated data from another drive onto the new empty drive so the data on the new drive could be duplicated but instead it just gave the error. I let a few hours pass and I didn't see duplication grow and when monitoring the drives they didn't show activity like it was moving data to fix the problem.

I didn't want to manually move around gigs worth of data to solve the problem so I ended up just turning off folder duplication on everything and figured once I turn it back on, it will duplicate properly since there is now free space on all drives. I have another HP MSS with all my data on it so I wasn't worried about turning off duplication and leaving it off for now.

Is this something that should be working on my system, and if not is it something that will be added later? I'm still undecided if I like pooled storage or not and these little non-automated features are things I'd have to do manually anyway if I chose non-pooled storage. Right now I still prefer non-pooled drives mainly due to performance vs pooled drive features.

Strang error messages "Input String Was Not In A Correct Format"

I'm running the beta on my home server (HP mediasmart). After updating to the beta, I clicked check for updates in the "HP MediaSmart software updates" section, it seemed to find one and I hit "Install". The install didnt' go right... I can't remember the exact details, but I let it sit for hours and it never completed... If I recall, I couldn't even close the console while I was remote desktop'ed into the server. I couldn't shut it down or anything. After a few hours I hit the power button on the back of the server, and it powered down gracefully. After powering back up everything seems to be working correctly and I've had no issues, except for sometimes when I launch the Home Server Console (whether on a remote PC or on the server itself) I get an error that you can see in this link:

Can the WHS PP1 download be installed without Remote Access? I have had no luck trying to config my router (Linksys WRT54GL) for remote access by HP MediaSmart but no luck so far.

Hey guys installed thr power pack 1 RTM, something I noticed after install is that in the consol server storage the system portion is now reporting 53GB. But if I remote into the server and check disk space it still shows 20GB system. Is this a bug or is something screwed up. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yesterday I got PowerPack 1 installed on my HP MediaSmart Server and then installed the updated Home Server Connector on my Vista 64-Bit Ultimate computer, so I thought I was home free.

Then I tried installing the Home Server Connector on another computer (Vista 32-Bit Ultimate). I can connect to the server and get to the Software folder, and I have an account set up on the server for this second machine. When I run the home connector software, it looks like it installs everything, then it asks me to provide the admin password for the server, which I do, then I get the following error:

"This computer cannot be added to Windows Home Server

Your user account does not have the required access permissions to install the security certificate"

I'm running setup.exe as administrator, and I also tried running WHSConnectorInstall directly as administrator with the same results. The account I'm running on is Vista 32-bit machine is an administrator account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get some additional machines connected to this server :-)

Restore CD can not find Server

I have PP1 installed on the WHS server (named "server") and the client software on 4 other PCs on the network. I copied the driver files from the most recent backup to a USB drive and attempted to do a restore of the system drive on my workstation. Both the server and my workstation have static IP addresses.

After booting from the CD-ROM and getting to the point in the restore wizard of loading drivers, the scan indicates No drivers found". Clicking continue, the wizard searches for the server and doesn't find it. Clicking "manual search" and supplying the name SERVER, returns the same result.

Running the WHS toolkit indicates only one "error" that can be ingnored with static IP addresses. The restore CD works fine on the other PCs on the network.

Arghh! This is frustrating.

Just updated my HP MediaSmart with the awaited RTM PP1. however as I try to install the connector software on my 64 bit machine, the setup crashes trying to find the WHS. Connector seems to be installed, and I can open the consol, but not log in as the whs is not found.

1. Prefix your Thread – Putting a prefix before your thread title helps the Windows Home Server team easily identify and search for threads. Issues are more likely to be tracked if you use prefixes. Examples:

2. If you have bug reported the problem through Microsoft Connect, paste the link into the thread so others can vote on the issue.

3. Check back on your thread and bug submission frequently! The Windows Home Server team may ask you for more information or log submissions. This is one of the keys to resolving a bug!

4. Explain to others how to clearly reproduce your issue. This can help you refine your “Repro Steps”. The more clear and accurate the “Repro Steps” are, the more likely the Windows Home Server team is able to reproduce the issue in their labs. This is also a great step to clarify whether your issue is really a bug.

Known Issues for Power Pack 1 RC4

Hi Everybody,

As you know, today we have released Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Release Candidate 4. While this build is mostly complete, there are a few known issues that we wish to make you aware of, and ask that you not file a bug, unless asked to by a member of the Home Server team or is explicitly stated below.

Storage:

· A Windows Home Server may blue screen with a specific “THIRD_PARTY_FILE_SYSTEM_FAILURE (108)” error code. This blue screen is generated to verify a specific code path in the Drive Extender filter driver, and doesn’t indicate a failure. In the case that a blue screen occurs please follow the steps outlined in the “What should I do if my home server crashes” section of the Release Documentation to submit the crash information.

· If installing from the Power Pack 1 Server Installation DVD, you may receive an error that the Backup Service is not running. You can ignore this message, as the service will start shortly after login.

· If you attempt to remove a hard drive and the removal fails, Drive Extender Migrator will not attempt any migration passes until the server is restarted.

· If you are using a two drive Windows Home Server, and you remove one drive, and then add a new drive in its place, you may see notifications of file conflicts. You can safely ignore these notifications.

· The “Storage Balanced on” date and time status on the Windows Home Server Console will not display the last time storage was balanced accurately. To update the Storage Balanced status, click on the shared folders tab each time the Home Server Console is opened.

Backup:

· In some scenarios, your Windows Home Server may run out of memory. You may see client-side notifications that the Backup service is not running. If you experience this issue, a workaround is presented below, and we ask that you please file a bug report with the requested information.

Workaround:

1. RDP into your Server by using Remote Desktop Connection

2. Open System Properties by clicking Start then right-click on My Computer and then click on Properties

3. Select the Advanced tab then click on the Settings button under the Performance section

4. Select the Advanced tab and click the Change button under Virtual Memory

5. Increase minimum and maximum page file size to 3000MB if you have values smaller than that displayed for the pagefile size.

What to do when filing a bug:

· Upload Error Reporting (TALQ) logs by running Toolkit (insert link to bug report doc on Connect)

· Include information about the size of the pagefile

· Include output of running processes by launching Command Prompt on your Home Server, and typing “tasklist > tasklist.txt” and attach the tasklist.txt file which will most likely be stored at “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator”

Windows Home Server Connector:

· Under certain conditions, the download of the necessary files to update the Home Server Connector may take up to an hour or more. If you experience this issue, a workaround is presented below, and we ask that you please file a bug report with the requested information.

Workaround:

o Run Setup.exe from \\<servername>\Software\Home Server Connector Software

What to do when filing a bug:

· Include the answers to the following questions in your bug report:

o Is your router connected to the internet?

o Is your computer a member of a domain?

o Has this computer ever been a member of a corporate network?

o A snapshot of the IE proxy settings. Open IE, click on Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings. Attach a screenshot of the proxy settings.

o Attempt to browse to http://<servername>:55000/ Was there any noticeable delay?

· Upload Error Reporting (TALQ) logs by running Toolkit (insert link to bug report doc on Connect)

· Under certain conditions when a health notification is displayed, your Tray Icon may appear hung and not recover from the hang. If you experience this issue, a workaround is presented below, and we ask that you please file a bug report with the requested information.

Workaround:

· Fix the problem that caused the Tray to issue a notification: Look at the Health dialog in the WHS Console for information on how to fix the actual problem.

· Close the WHS Console.

· From Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, and kill WHSTrayApp.exe

What to do when filing a bug:

· Include the answers to the following questions in your bug report:

o Did you see an error bubble popup from the Tray? What did it say?

o What was the storage capacity of your home server? How many drives?

o How much free space did you have on your primary hard drive?

o Was your primary/secondary drive failing?

o Any other storage related observations?

· Upload Error Reporting (TALQ) logs by running Toolkit (insert link to bug report doc on Connect)

Submitting Feedback

In order for us to gather feedback on the issues you encounter while using the Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta, it is important that the feedback is sent to the right place.

Please submit all bug reports for this release using the following bug reporting form on MS Connect, via the http://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer web site.

WHS Power Pack 1 Public Beta Bug Report Form

Please make sure that your bug reports are filed using Connect. This is the only way that the Home Server team can track and subsequently fix any issues that you bring up.

Every submitted bug report should include accompanying CAB numbers so that the Home Server team can look at the logs and try to help resolve the issue. Depending on whether you are experiencing an issue related to your home server, your home computer, or both, you need to submit the logs and the CAB numbers for your home server, your home computer, or both. If you are unsure of the root cause of the issue, please include the logs and the CAB numbers for both your home server and your home computer when submitting a bug report.

In order to obtain a CAB number, you need to install the Windows Home Server Toolkit on both your home server and your home computers running the Connector software. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to install the Windows Home Server Toolkit, and how to obtain CAB numbers:

Windows Home Server Toolkit installation

1. From any home computer, download the “Windows Home Server Toolkit” from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DE10C0E9-2D46-4770-91FE-6B84AE06F960&displaylang=en.

2. Run WHSToolkit.msi to install the “Windows Home Server Toolkit” on your home computer.

3. Click on Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt to open up a command prompt.

4. Type the following command (including the quotation marks) and press ENTER. This will launch the Connector Troubleshooter tool

· "C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\Toolkit\ConnectorTroubleshooter.exe" -a

5. From the “Server” menu on the Connector Troubleshooter, select “Publish Server add-in”. This will start the “Environment” dialog box.

6. Close the Connector Troubleshooter tool.

7. Type your Windows Home Server password.

8. Open your Windows Home Server Console, go to Setting->Add-ins, and click the Available tab.

9. You should see the “Windows Home Server Toolkit” in the list of available add-ins, select it and click Install to install the Windows Home Server Toolkit on your Home Server.

10. Restart the Windows Home Server Console – A Toolkit page is now available under Settings.

How to get the CAB number on your home server

1. Open the Windows Home Server Console

2. Go to Settings->Toolkit->Support tab, and click the Send->Collect and Send to upload the logs for your home server to Microsoft.

3. Write down the CAB number and include the CAB number in your Connect bug report

How to get the CAB number on your home computer

1. On your home computer, go to Start Menu->All Programs->Windows Home Server Toolkit->Error Reporting

2. Type y to send the home computer’s log files to Microsoft

3. Write down the CAB number and include the CAB number in your Connect bug report

4. Press ENTER to quit

What do I do when I am having problems burning the ISOs?:

· Attempt to burn the ISO at a slower speed

· Use different a different brand of media

How do I request a Product Key?:

· Click Product Keys on the left

· Click Request Product Keys

How do I upgrade my server to Power Pack 1 when Power Pack 1 is released?:

To upgrade your server to the released version of Power Pack 1, Remote Desktop into your server, open Add / Remove Programs from Control Panel, select the Show Updates checkbox, and remove the RC4 release (titled PRERELEASE Windows Home Server Power Pack 1), reboot your server, and then run Windows Update to download and install the RTM version of Power Pack 1.

If you are using the Power Pack 1 Evaluation ISOs, you will not be able to upgrade from the beta release to the released version of Power Pack 1.
