restore XP bkf files to Vista

Greetings from Montreal.
My Toshiba laptop died a few weeks back and I now have an HP Pavilion. Luckily I did a full backup just before it died.
Toshiba says my old laptop is unrepairable and they can't even get at the data on the hard drive.
I want to restore some, not all, files to my new HP which currently has Home Premium but I have ordered Vista Ultimate so I can load some IBM software that wont run on Home Premium.
My problem is how do I restore files from my backup. System restore wont do it. I have searched on the web but I only find OEM software that I would have to pay a rather significant sum just to restore a few files and maybe rarely if ever use the software again. Not an option that is favourable to say the least.
So, anyone out there know how to do this? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanx, BB.

Seems your on the wrong forum.
Having said that, if you ask Google the question you will get Download details: Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility; Utility for restoring backups made on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to computers running Windows Vista and Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008

Bruce,
If you still have the Toshiba Backups, you can open, say,the most recent one, from any Client computer. Just go to Backups through the Connector, select the one you want and then select Open. You can then copy files from that open backup to wherever you want to. I'm assuming you are referring to just data files and not programs you were thinking of trying to install.

Hi, thanx for your reply and suggestions. I will check and see what forum I am supposed to be on but in the meantime I tried your suggestion and it wont work. I get a message saying the software is not compatible with my system. Again I have Vista Home premium going eventually to Vista Ultimate. Not sure what the problem is. I tried several times with the same result. I tried it from my old desktop that has XP and could not restore from there. The program suggested of course does not run on XP as it is supposed to be a Vista program attempting to restore XP files.
Anyway, any other suggestions I would be glad to try. BB.

Hi, thanx for your suggestions and your reply. I have my backup on an external hard drive. I am trying to restore from there. Not sure what you mean by "going to Backups thru the Connector". I tried another suggestion, see my 2nd post, but it did not work for compatibility reasons. Cheers. BB.

Hi Brubber,
This is my first use of a forum.
When you write "Seems you're on the wrong forum".
As I seem to have a similar problem to Bruce, I wonder what forum Bruce should have been on?
