I just got back from my weekend vacation and received the email for acceptence into WHS!!!!! Question. I have an existing computer with 4 drives in RAID. I am using an ASUS Motherboard with 4 SATA on board connectors. Do I just start the installation process and let it install and WHS will see all 4 drives as one automatically?

    Thanks,

    Abe

When you install WHS, it will wipe out everything you have on those drives, so be careful if you have something already installed or if you have data you want to save. There are people using RAID and I'll look around for some of those threads, but if you can, just setup your drives in JBOD and let WHS take care of the disk. I'd have one disk installed - install WHS on that and then add the rest of your disks to the system and add them to the storage pool.

As a reminder, RAID is not supported in WHS ....

I set my system up with 6 SCSI disks in RAID 5 and then installed WHS with no issues. WHS will see it as one disk and then split it normally 10 GB / remaining storage.

I would unhook 3 of the drives and install WHS on whatever one will be device 0 on channel 0.  After WHS is installed I'd hook the remaining drives up and migrate them into the storage pool.  I personally don't see any point to running RAID with WHS other than to complicate my life when I need to replace a drive.  That's one of the major selling points of WHS, the benefits of RAID without the complications ....

Jim I agree with you and I have no attention in running RAID. I just would like to know what is he smoothest transition from my RAID server to WHS. I have read through the bETA 2 documentation and can find no support on the transition. Thank you.

Are your drives currently in a RAID or are they JBOD plugged into the motherboard?  You have a couple of posts that mention both ...

It is in the RAID 5 configuation.

Will a 5 drive bay SUPER MICRO hot swappable chassis work with WHS?

WHS could care less what HD enclosure you use. Smile You'll need a HBA that supports Windows Server 2003, though.
