Ok, i have a little problem with my WHS machine.

Once every 1-2 days it will stop responding to network requests...ie, won't reply to a ping, WHS Console won't connect and unable to browse the shares. Since the machine is headless im not able to know if its frozen or has some kind of error message up.

When this happens i do a hard reset on it and it boots into Windows fine and begins to work again.

If i remote desktop into the machine i normally get 2-4 "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service encountered a problem and needed to close", etc, etc "do you wish to send this event log to microsoft?", which i have done...

Now, im not 100% sure, but i would expect the "Volume Shadow Copy Service" is what WHS uses to backup all my data or do a backup across the network?

Weird thing is, i have turned off Folder Duplication as well as all PC backups, and it still does it.

Any idea what this could be?

The Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS) on Windows Home Server takes "snapshots" of your Shared Folders on your home server every 12 hours, so that you can restore "Previous Versions" of files and/or folders that may get accidentally deleted or accidentally overwritten (the Save vs. Save As mistake).

The Previous Versions UI can be found in Windows XP or Windows Vista when browsing a folder that has VSS "Snapshots" available on the server.  This is one advantage to storing your stuff on your home server over having it stored on an individual PC, as the "Previous Versions" restore process is pretty slick.

    What build are you using?

What are the exact error messages?

There were several VSS bugs submitted during the CTP and I believe they were fixed for the upcoming RC release

Sorry fopr taking so long to reply...been a bit busy...

Im using Build 3790 (Service Pack 2)...well, thats what it says...

i think it is the CTP release.

and i actually haven't had the error again since i posted this, so can't get any more details...typical computer Stick out tongue

I might just put up with it till the RC1 release and try that!

Ok  - glad the error went away.

For future reference the buld number of Windows Home Server is stored in the Windows Home Server Console - Server Settings - Resources

    ok, small update...

i updated to RC1, all seemed to be going well...

however, one of the HDDs was showing as unhealthy, so i repaired it...it also forced it into PIO mode...got that sorted too

then a second HDD showed up as unhealthy, so i repaired that too..

then i got the error again...

and i have uTorrent installed and a few of my downloads have had CRC errors in them, i thought it was just the torrent...

put all this together, and you get faulty hdd Sad

im in the process of testing them now...running sector scans on 1x500 and 2x250Gb HDDs is not fun!!!

    ok, little update...

all 3 HDDs tested fine Sad

i reinstalled with the RC1 of WHS.

Worked great for about a week, the i download a few 4Gb-7Gb files on uTorrent and the exact same thing!!!

I had to shut down the machine to install a Gigbit network card, and i recieved about 10 "Volume Shadow Copy Service has Encountered a Problem" error messages Sad

So, im back to square one...any suggestions?

BTW, the actual system itself seems to fun fine, no hangs or crashes...

    Pantonious,

You have described the exact same problem I am seeing.  Almost to the letter.   I just did a simple reboot the other day and got like 10-15 Error Report messages that Volume Shadow Copy had encountered an Error.

I even put my uTorrent downloads on a non-replicated share folder.   I simply turned the duplication off on the Public share and that is where I put my downloads,  I set uTorrent to pre-allocate all the files.   Still no dice,  seems to be acting the same.

I have 4 250GB Western Digitals,  and I took the time to do unconditional formats on all of them before install RC1,  that week where everyone wondered when RC1 was coming out.

Should I have uTorrent pointing to the \\server\Public folder instead of D:\Shares\Public?   for where to save the torrents?

Because I see that the actual mount points for the other drives are C:\fs\5,6,7  or whatever.   Should I use the network redirector \\server\public or whatever instead so that the replication is not f-ed up.

Almost all of the big torrents are corrupted after download.

I think you have a couple of options. First, I believe there's an addin that will manage your torrents for you. You might wnat to check it out. Second, you can add a drive to the server, but not include it in the storage pool, then store your torrents there. You won't be able to manage the drive in the console, which means some manual work setting up shares if you need to (or copying files form the torrent drive to the network shares) but I think it should work.

I'll admit that I'm not a user of peer-to-peer file sharing apps, so maybe someone who is will have another idea...

I am using the uTorrent Add-in already.  I don't think that has anything to do with the problem VSS is reporting and the corruption I am getting in my torrent downloads,  and the never ending "Storage Balancing" my server seems to be doing.

The weird thing is, it only seems to happen on files that are split between .rar files...

If i download something that is just one single file, then there is no problem...

I will think about your suggestion just to have a stand-alone drive, however, it might be a bit hard for my room mate...he's not the most computer savey Stick out tongue

I am using the \\server\public    and using \\server\whatever for all things,  where it looks for the torrent files,  where it stores the downloads.   I download four torrents today that were rar files,  and so far no problems.

My WHS (RC1, version numbers below) appears to be working well (icon is green) and backups appear to be happening.

However, when I RDP to the WHS, I see the following popup:

Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service encountered a problem and needed to close.

This error occurred on 9/15/2007 at 1:13:07 PM.

The worrisome thing about this is that it happened almost a week ago, and despite clicking the "Send Error Report" button multiple times in the intervening 6 days (and rebooting, and turning off the Customer Experience Improvement Program & Automatic Windows Error Reporting), the same pop-up keeps coming back (with the same date).

How do I make this popup go away? It's like the boy crying "wolf", eventually I'm going to just tune it out.

Or is this a known problem fixed in RTM?

    Thanks ... Mike

Doesn't appear to be, I've just upgraded to RTM and am getting the exact same problem described above (was also getting the error with RC1).

I have the uTorrent add-in installed as well, can't say if this has anything to do with the problem though.  Upgraded on Friday and got the uTorrent add-in up and running at the same time.  WHS has lasted until last night before showing the Volume shadow copy service error.

Does anyone know what effect the error has on the server, once I click them away everything seems to continue to run fine?

Thanks Nigel, not a good sign.

Nothing extra installed besides WHS itself on my system.

this may be of interest, was checking out the event viewer:

"The shadow copies of volume C:\fs\4 were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

    links to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826936/en-us

Times of the event errors seems about right, no idea what it means though!

In my case I had a DCOM failure in the system event log 2 minutes before the date of the pop-up, saying "The server {E579AB5F-1CC4-44B4-BED9-DE0991FF0623} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout".

    That CLSID belongs to C:\Windows\system32\vssvc.exe.

Also in the application event log closer to the time of the pop-up was "Faulting application vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x0004a48d".

Since WHS itself isn't complaining, should we be ignoring this?

I'm seeing the same error as above in the event log:

Reporting queued error: faulting application vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x0004a48d.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

this one is reported as Information though

and also lots of these (reported as an error):

Unable to move file C:\fs\4\System Volume Information\{8269ee3a-6c7a-11dc-95a0-001bfc3566dc}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} after many attempts.  Skipping file.

Unable to move file D:\System Volume Information\{8269ee3c-6c7a-11dc-95a0-001bfc3566dc}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} after many attempts.  Skipping file.

Did anything come of this?  I'm having these problems as well, and I'd love to find a solution.  Is UTorrent the common factor?

    Holy old posts, Batman! Wink

db298, since this post is so old (and a lot has changed since then, not the least of which is WHS was released Smile  ), you might want to start a new post (and give as many details as possible for your situation).
