When the new update ( KB957825 ) was automatically downloaded my connector icons turned red. It said there was a new version of WHS connector is available on server. When I tried to install the upgrade, I get an error. I’m logged in as administrator, I’ve turn off my antivirus and fire wall on my PC’s and server. It still will not upgrade. Its say’s the newer version is 6.0.1800.0. I’ve uninstalled the existing connector, restarted my pc and installed the new version from the sever. The connector version is now 6.0.1800.0 I still have a red icon’s and the severs does not see My PC’s.

I have three pc’s on my network, one running vista home the other two running XP. I built my WHS about two months ago, which ran fine till the upgrade. ANY suggestions

Sparky, have you by any chance renamed, moved or deleted the folders \\server\software\Add-ins and/or \\server\software\Home Server Connector Software?

If nt, can you tell us what kind of error message you're seeing?

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

No, I have not moved or deleted the add-ins folder. The \\server\software\Home Server Connector Software folder is in the original state, except it has the upgrade .DLL files that I believe the update added. As far as the error message, just a generic - " This operation cannot be completed at this time, if problem persists contact product support. "

Ken, I am having exactly the same problem with the update as Sparky 369. I have three computers (2 Vista Ultimate & 1 Home Premium) attached to my HP MediaSmart Home Server and have had good luck with it until this situation. I can still reach my server folders from all my machines and can log onto the server locally and via remote access via the web. I just can't do the update on any of the 3 machines. Please advise!

Same here except that only four out of my five PCs seems to have been affected and that would be my Vista x64 laptop. However while trying to connect to http://homeserver on one of the PCs that seems to work (WHS tray icon is green) I notice that I get a certificate error now. I don't remember getting that before. OTOH it has been a while since I've surfed to that page.

Once you've filed the bug report, try browsing to \\[servername]\Software\Home Server Connector Software and run setup.exe. At least for me, it would not uninstall the old version of the Connector software using WHSConnectorInstall.exe (which is what http://[servername]:55000 points to). However, setup.exe does uninstall the old version then it proceeds to install the new one.

Well for now, I’ve uninstalled the update KB957825 on the server and then restarted my WHS. Then restarted my three pc's which now have green icons again and the server now see's my pc's again (hopefully it will start backing up again). Unfortunately the server has down loaded the update again and waiting for me to click install, which I’m not doing yet.

Unfortunately, you need to be in the position you were originally in - (problems!) for the bug report to be effective as it generates current info in the process.
If, when you re-install the Update, you encounter the same problems, then is the time to file it if you can.

I have the identical problem. All 3 of my XP-32bit clients are showing red, requesting me to upgrade the Connector software. But the connector (now at 6.0.1800.0) will not upgrade. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the connector, which put me right back where I started. My Addins and Connector directories are still in the correct, default locations in the Software share.

Also, none of the clients have backed up since Nov. 25th, and they are all grayed out in the WHS Console, so I can't do a "backup now". Neither my server nor the clients has been used since before Nov. 23 due to the holidays, so I am assuming something went wrong in the auto updates.

All connectivity to the web, my WHS website, the WHS console, and my server shares is OK.

Yes, I've ran setup from the server on all 3 pc's after KB957825 was installed. My connector version is now 6.0.1800.0, witch I believe is the upgraded version. Its still the same red icons, an error message, " This operation cannot be completed at this time, if problem persists contact product support. ". The server doesnt see my PC's when the update installed.

I disabled auto-updates in WHS and uninstalled KB957825 and rebooted. Then I "repaired" each client's WHS Connector Software in Add/Remove Programs on the client, and rebooted each client. After this, each client was no longer grayed out in the WHS Console computers tab and can now be backed up. (Software versions now at 6.0.1800.0)

Then manually ran Update in WHS Console settings, and KB 957825 was re-installed. Clients also were updated fro the server with the newer Connector software (6.0.1800.24) and rebooted. Back to all clients wanting to update the connector software, but can't. And also, all clients were again grayed out in the WHS Console, and cannot be backed up.

Repeated steps in first paragraph and all is good again.

I went to C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server on all three of my pc's, right clicked Properties of WHSTrayApp.exe, file version number is 6.0.1800.0 (whs_pp1.080712-1300) product version 6.0.1800.0

Client connector version is 6.0.1800.0 after KB removed and the client was "updated". The error message on the client that occurred with the KB installed was the same as what Sparky noted:
" This operation cannot be completed at this time, if problem persists contact product support. "

In WHS Console -> Settings -> Resources:

With KB957825 installed:
Console and Remote Access were 6.0.1800.0 and
BU & Restore, DE, and Storage Mgr were 6.0.1800.24.

After the KB was uninstalled:
All were 6.0.1800.0 except DE was 6.0.1800.8.

File dates in \\Server\Software\Home Server Connector Software were all 7/12/2008 after KB was uninstalled.

However, that's not correct. The 2 msi files should have a date of 11/01/08 (or 10/31/08, depending on where you live). Have you tried uninstalling KB957825, rebooting the server, then installing it again, then rebooting again? Can you please copy and paste the exact path to those files you listed above?

There's your problem. :) You renamed the folder. It must be Home Server Connector Software. It must match or it won't work. First, rename the folder from "W H S connector Software" to "Home Server Connector Software" (without the quotes). Once you do that, uninstall KB957825, reboot the server, install KB957825, reboot the server again. Then try updating the Connector software on the clients.

When I run the Windows Home Server Toolkit (Ver 1.1) Connector Troubleshooter on either a 32-bit or 64-bit Vista machine, it tells me:

The version of the Connector software does not match the version of Windows Home Server

even though the version on the client machines is 6.0.1800.24 .

The applicable part of the log for the Connector Troubleshooter reports:

No, that's a different problem. (And, FWIW, mine did the same thing.) Actually, the only reason I installed the Toolkit v1.1 on my Vista PC was to get the toolkit.msi file published to the server. Once that was complete, I uninstalled the toolkit from my Vista PC. (Frankly, I'm not worried about it because everything still works. :) )

When do the new MSI's get downloaded? Along with KB957825?

I'm having the same problem, and my concern is that I do not see any of the updated MSI files (10/31/08) in my Home Server Connector Software folder.

I'm going to try the same procedure as tried by Sparky above.

I did the same thing and renamed the Home Server Folder to Windows Home Server because I could never find it under Home Server.

If someone knows when the Connector updates get downloaded or know where they can be downloaded, please let me know.

You must run the update package in order to receive the new msi files. Make sure the path to your msi files is \\server\software\home server connector software (replace server with the name of your server). Once you've done that, logon to the server desktop and uninstall KB957825 (found in Add/Remove Programs and make sure Show updates is checked). Reboot your server. Check for updates again (it should reinstall 957825). Reboot your server again. You should now have the new msi files.

Sorry for being stupid... but I'm unable to tell if this discussion has solved the problem I have with one client being told it is out of date and the other not.

client #1: XP (all software in /program files/windows home server/ are 6.0.1800.24 installed from server)

client #2: XP (all software in /program files/windows home server/ are 6.0.1500.6 installed from CD)

server: WHS (all software in /Software/Home Server Connector Software/ are 6.0.1800.0 dated July 12 2008, except the two .msi files dated Oct. 31 2008). Inside the console>settings>resources> the versions reported are 6.0.1800.24... except Console and Remote Access which report 6.0.1800.0.

Client #1 complains it is out of date. Client #2 does not (green icon in system tray). The console reports under "Network at Risk" tab that both clients need to be upgraded.

Is this a known bug? Should I care or just go on as if nothing is wrong?

Thanks for explaining it s-l-o-w-l-y. I'm technically inclined... but have already maxed out my time limit on learning/debugging my WHS machine!

First thing I would do is start your own thread. ;)

Having said that, it sounds like your install files on the server are correct. But just to make sure, open the Console, click on the Settings button, Resources tab and click Update Now. If it installs any updates, reboot the server once it's done. Keep following this procedure until it says there are no new updates for Windows Home Server. Once you complete that, try completely uninstalling the Connector software from both PCs (and reboot both PCs once the uninstallation is complete). Then go back to \\server\software\home server connector software and run setup.exe. If you still have problems after that, feel free to post back (although I would still suggest starting your own thread).
