I wanted to update the post "Personal Web Site Using WHS as the Web Server", http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/0802b37e-4cdc-47d9-8437-2fe187d3ec19 but it seems to be locked.

Google killed their GooglePages and moved the content to Google Sites. In doing so they succeeded in killing all the functionality (read ability to download the info) of the http://whswebsite.googlepages.com/ website.

The purpose of this post is to:

1. Let you know the ability to download the instructions, examples and code has been restored

2. Google is referring the URL but should they kill this as well, the new link is http://sites.google.com/site/whswebsite/

Event Log Corrupt

I don't know if this is WHS or W2K3 related, but since it happened on my WHS, I'll post here and go from there.

When updating one of my workstations after the PP3 update, I logged onto the server postupdate to check the event logs.

All were OK except for the system log, which reports being corrupt and won't display. Naturally, the only change I've made to the system was the PP3 update.

Would the PP3 update potentially corrupt the log? Or would other issues (like a failed client software update attempt) do that?

Now that I've found the problem, how do I reset the log so the event viewer log will log new events?

files are shared, workstations are backed up (and occasionally restored) and life goes on...

Error installing new connector software on Win7 after installing PP3

I have an EX470. On my desktop which is running Win 7 32bit, installed last week, before with PP2 everything worked great Then after installing PP3, the old connector software said there was new connector software and offered to install it for me. No joy!. It didn't install, and stuck me in an endless cycle of "new software installed, please reboot". Which I tried 3 or 4 times. In any case, now here is where I am at.

Rebooted the home server. Runing great with my netbook, Win 7 home premium. My desktop with Win 7 Ultimate won't install the connector software.

So, removed the HP Media Smart Software, went to http://"server":55000, and said to install the new connector software. Everything was fine on the HP Media Smart install, and started fine to install the new connector software. But I then got this error:

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2908. <ok>"

I have to click OK, 8 times to clear it. And then the following dialog comes up:

"An error occurred durin the installation of assembly "Microsoft.HomeServer.Archive.Common,version="6.0.0.0", culture="neutral",publicKeyToken="31BF3856AD364E35",processorArchitecture="MSIL". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x8002802F"

I've spent the morning with HP Media Smart tech support and they say it isn't their problem, and to find a solution online (which I didn't find) or contact MS Tech support. So I thought I would post to see if anyone has any suggestions.

PP3: TV Archiving doesn't seem to work

So, last night I marked a few series recordings to be archived. I'm using the default settings and I was expecting that the TV Transfer service would start moving the episodes of these series overnight. As of this morning, not a single episode has been moved. The activity log is empty. Can somebody shed some light on the workings of TV Archiving? What triggers the archive process and when is it supposed to run? So far not having much fun with PP3.

PP3: Windows 7 client still claims there is no backup?

Hello

I thought to have read that PP3 takes care of the warning in Windows 7 telling that the computer is not backed up.
I've just installed PP3, upgraded the connector on my client machine, rebooted the client machine just to be sure, and even ran a backup manually. Still, the "Wartungscenter" (Maintenance Center in the US version?) shows the warning that I should configure a backup.

WHS is German, Client is Win 7 Ultimate, also German (the English language pack is also installed, but not used in any account).

Any ideas?

WHS PP3

PP3 installed no problem on my HP EX485 last night.

Question #1. Do I need to re-install WHS connector on my Win7 (64bit) PC. I believe I installed the correct one when I bought the PC, and it is currently working just fine.

Question #2. Does PP3 address 64 bit Bare Metal Restore ?

PP3 installed - Still Shows PP2 as current version in Computer Properties but correctly show PP3 in Resources tab of Console

Just an FYI (perhaps bug report). After installed Power Pack 3 on my WHS, if you right click the computer icon and bring up the properties popup, it shows "Windows Home Server with Power Pack 2" as the current version. If you check the "Resources" tab of the WHS Console, it correctly shows "Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3" as the current version.

So make sure you check the resources tab of the console to verify that the PP3 was installed, not the computer properties tab.

This doesn't effect performance at all, but may be part of the confusion people are having determining if PP3 is installed or not.

Toshiba Laptop Freeze

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop model A135-s4467 which is currently running Windows 7 which I upgraded from Vista.
The laptop freezes when trying to backup to WHS. WHS is running power pack 2 and connector version 6.0.2030.2.
Lockup occurs both on automatic backup and manual, requiring a hard power reset.
It does it both on Vista and Windows 7. I have the latest Bios from Toshiba.
None of my desktop PC's or my daughters HP laptop have had a problem.
Typically after rebooting from a backup freeze I can immediately do a successful manual backup.

PP3 - Permission error in Media Center while Archiving

Had a problem with getting TV archiving to work with PP3 in Media Center:

Here is what I have\did:
- WIndows 7 on my desktop doing the recordings
- Windows Home Server with PP3 installed
- Installed new console after WHS was updated on Windows 7 machine
- Went into Media Center and also installed new add-in and rebooted

Went and selected 1 TV show to attempt an archive with compression copy for windows mobile device. Heres my settings:
- Archived all recordings automatically not checked
- Checked Move recordings to my home server
- Checked Create a compressed copy for: "Windows Mobile"
- For Save compressed copy to: I selected "Home Server videos folder"

After it seemed to completed I got the following activities logs: "TV Archive does not have permission to access this folder'
It is continuing to attempt to archive the recording. The compression attempt did work and I found the file within my video share on the home server...

Any help here?

Also what folder\share would it archive my tv recordings too? I already had a "TV Recordings" folder created if that matters...

Can I uninstall or disable windows media center connector?

Hello, I wish to uninstall or disable "windows media center connector" not to be confused with the connector software for connecting to the WHS. This program seems to be geared twards windows home server because it just hogs my network connection forever finding media files of music, video, pictures, and recorded tv. I would like to disable this but dont know how or uninstall it I accidently installed it thinking it was something else one day and didnt realize what it was or what it was going to do after i installed it. I cant find it anywhere in my programs list on my computer or the WHS. Closest thing i can find is a service called "Windows Media PLayer Network Sharing Service" Description: Shares Windows Media PLayer libraries to other networked players and media devices using Universal Plug and Play. I have set the startup type for this service to MANUAL and STOPPED the service but it seems to come back to life possibly after a reboot. any help would be appreciated.

Also it only happens when I open the WMP 11 window. It starts downloading every pice of media i have on the home server or at least adding it to the library in the WMP 11 I would like to stop this action.

Pre upgrade backup

I just upgraded my wife's PC from XP Home to Windows 7 Professional. I understood this was a clean install and had all the programs lined up to reinstall. I had thought I was in great shape for restoring her files since I had a whole string of backups on my WHS. After the upgrade, though, I couldn't open any of the XP backups. I noticed a thread on another discussion that gave some ideas about switching the GUID, and this all worked well except the XP backups still won't open. They go to the end and then I get "/Z: drive not accessible". Investigating I found that the license agreement actually does state that the backups are good for only the PC they were created on, but this is in fact the exact same PC with only the OS changed.

Authorization Directory

hi! On my home server, I can store videos that only certain users can only see and also my Xbox 360, is this possible?

In Windows Home Server, we just decide that the rights of a directory and activate or not the streaming media to devices including the Xbox 360.

How do I make my Xbox 360 and my PC can access them only to a directory video?

PP3 - No updates available

I searched through these forums and found several posts about people whose PP3 installs failed, but I didn't find anyone discussing what to do when the PP3 update isn't even available. I've followed the instructions posted here:

Yet when I click Update Now, it reports that no updates are currently available.

My WHS console currently reports that it's running WHS "...with Power Pack 2" and the version information reads "6.0.2030.0" for all components. I understand that PP3 components should be "6.0.2423.0", so I'm confident that PP3 hasn't been installed automatically and I missed it. I've rebooted the server several times, but no change.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This wouldn't have anything to do with region would it? PP3 is released worldwide isn't it?

PP3 Fails to Install

Hi,

I previously had the prerelease version of PP3 installed and it was working fine. I uninstalled using the uninstall script as documented in the release notes and rebooted. I then ran windows update and the PP3 install starts and terminates with an error that the update can not be installed. This is after the download, it starts the installation process. I reinstalled the PP3 prerelease and uninstalled again, tried the PP3 update and it failed again. Ideas?

WHS Power Pack 3 fails to install in HP Mediasmart server

I tried to install the Power Pack 3 update last night on my HP MediaSmart server. Each time it completes the download but then just responds - failed. I restarted the server several times and attempted to install from a Remote Desktop login (instead of the WHS Console). This machine has 512M RAM - is that a potential issue? I noticed several other updates installed yesterday (and when I accessed the box using Remote Desktop, I noticed IE 8 had been installed). Any ideas? Other details of this server needed?

Remote Access problems with Firefox

Hi, i'm not sure if this is a bug with firefox, but when i connect remotely from the web to my WHS with Internet Explorer all works fine, but with Firefox i can access only to Shared Folders and Home Page, not to Computers. Here are some screenshots to clarify it:

WHS Install vs C Drive Size Allocation

This question has probably been asked before but I could immediately find an answer so I apologize for any burden I create.

I'm not happy with the arbitrary 20 GB C drive allocation. I think that it is too small and would like to make it larger. as an aside, I think that the installation process ought to be modified so that a user may specify an allocation or take the Microsoft allocated default according to the individual whims/needs. My very limited attempts to create a larger space have been unsuccessful to date. Normally, I'd be happy to play but I'm in a time crunch at the moment, so...

I'd like a 70 GB C Drive. I understand that the WHS install process allocates 20 GB to D: and the rest to a JBOD pool. I also understand that the minimum hard disk space available to WHS must be at least 80GB.

My disk hardware is 3 x Seagate 1TB drives controlled by an Areca 1110 SATA RAID card. Initially I had all 3 drives in a single RAID 5 set. I'm now thinking that the only way to meet my requirements is to:

create two (2) raid sets. One at the minimum 80 GB size allocation and the other for the balance of the available space (approx. 2.7 TB);
install WHS into the minimum allocated space and let it create its' 20 GB and 60 GB C and D drives;
after the installation is complete, bring the second RAID set on line;
transfer everything from the install created D drive to the now E drive;
delete the WHS install created D drive;
change the drive letter of the E drive to D;
reboot;
add the remaining 60 GB from the first RAID set into the C drive.

Please show me the error of my ways/suggest an alternative so that I can complete my WHS installation in a drive space that is more appropriate to my perceived needs.

Restore from backup stuck at 81%

Previously my backup was stuck at 79% - then after I installed some updates (power pack/etc) my restore is now stuck at 81%. It never completes and if you wait a long while (30 minutes or more) you will get the message "the connector can no longer communicate with the backup server". I have 3 computers to test the connector on, windows xp and vista, and none of them seem to move past 81%.

I've been trying to find a solution for this issue or a workaround because I have a backup with some information on it that I no longer have the source for. I've read many people have the 79% problem and I've read of others with the 81% problem popping up after they applied fixes. I know that at 79% seems to be when the client PC starts to load the virtual drive and in some cases a Z: drive does pop up on my machine, but I cannot browse it and often get the "this drive isn't formatted, yes/no" message.

Please, someone tell me Microsoft planned a way to extract a backup set that doesn't go through the broken connector software! If I have 220 GB of useless data that can't be recovered, that is awfully sad because I think pkzip could do better than Microsoft has...

any work around people have is appreciated, thank you.

Hello,

after more than one year of correct working of the (wanderful) backup feature of my WHS server, now I'm facing a singular problem: the backup server process is running correctly (a manual backup from a client PC is done correctly), but the WHS console thinks that it is not there and so I'm not able to see the backup state and make a configuration. I'm sure that the backups DB it's ok: the "backup repair" function of the console works...
The server OS is updated and I haven't installed new add-ins in the console recently.
Any ideas?

Hypothetical hard drive crash

If the WHS OS hard drives crashes, can I reinstall the OS and still save my backups and shares in tack? Some of my shared hd's are external. If I have to reinstall the OS will it help if I unplug the externals until after the reinstall? I'm just trying to plan ahead in case of the worse case scenario. What is the best way to plan for this?

Old backups after windows 7 upgrade with 10 computer limit?

So I have 9 computers backing up on to WHS and am starting to convert some of the PC's over to Windows 7. The problem is the 10 limit on WHS. I still only have the same 9 PC's but the Windows 7 install is another machine.

So how are all of you going to keep your old backups?

I mean the whole idea of the the WHS is to be able to keep backups and I do not like the idea of loosing all of my old backups just because I want to upgrade the machine to windows 7.

Seems to me that a computer is a computer regardless of the the version of the operating system and it should not take up 2 machines spots on WHS.

Now I always do a clean install when I upgrade a machine as many years in the software business has taught me that upgrades create more problems then they are worth.

I would love to hear how all of you are planning to handle this.

Bug? Faulty "check your antivirus software status" warning on Windows 7

My WHS is running PP3, installed today via Windows Update. Never ran the beta, if that matters.

Today I performed a clean install of Windows 7 x64 and McAfee VirusScan 8.7i Patch 2. There were no alerts in Security Center. As soon as I installed the latest Home Server Connector, I started getting the red alert from the connector saying my antivirus software is reporting out-of-date. It only happens for a fraction of a second, then immediately goes back to green. It happens repeatedly, about every sixty seconds, over and over. And of course the alert now is appearing on all of my home systems running the WHS connector.

Any one else experiencing this? It's annoying beyond belief.

How does one determine what was lost in a disc failure?

Today one of my discs had a head crash and was totally inoperable, so I took it out. It was an ancient 300GB IDE and I don't know how full it was at the time. My duplication settings don't cover much stuff, just photos that I can't get hold of again, so I assume I have lost some data during this episode. I knew this would happen if a disc failed and I'm fine with that since most of the stuff I can get hold of again.

My question is: how can I find out what I lost? At a cursory glance over my shared folders nothing stands out. I did read this thread: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssoftware/thread/58a871d2-2852-492a-8b0f-2f8d30f73d9b - however the add-in recommended within does not seem to have anything to do with being able to tell me what files I lost, though I did install it and had a poke around.

So:

1. Is there some way I can get a report of what was lost in the failure? I assume the OS keeps track of what's kept where, so as long as the OS disc didn't fail this information should be available?

2. If not, how will lost data appear? Will it just not be there? Will it appear to be there until I try and access it, whereupon it will show up as inaccessible?

Cannot update Windows Home Server, receive error 0x8007000B from windows update page

I'm trying to update my windows home server with power pack 3. I started by using windows home server console. That failed to download the updates. I then tried windows update from IE directly on the server. I receive the error 0x8007000B. I have searched all knowledge base articles and related posts and tried a number of remedies. Nothing has helped. Also, many of the remedies did not apply to WHS. PLEASE HELP!!!

Getting Started with WHS

Hello - Getting started with my new Acer WHS, which came out of the box with PP1 installed. I am trying to get the server to update software by going into the Console > Settings > General, but I keep getting an error that says "Windows Home Server updates installation can not complete. Please try again later. If the problem persists, please restart the server."

So, I logged into my homeserver using (the unsupported) RDC. I tried using the browser to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, however, the browser cannot get out to anything tied to microsoft.com. I can get to google.com, but I can't even ping www.microsoft.com. It's odd and I assume related problem to not being able to update software.

I am betting it's an IE permissions problem, but I am surprised this was configured this way from Acer. Also, I can't figure out what the problem actually is.

Any help would be appreciated.

WHS and Robot.txt for google indexing.

My girlfriend has made a website which we now host on our WHS. This works fine offcourse.
However, when we tried to get the site indexed through google we discovered a problem.

Apparently we need to edit the "robot.txt" file if we want to get the site properly indexed on Google.
If we enter our url http://<my_domain>.homeserver.com/robot.txt we get the following:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Now we know what it should read but we do not know where to find the robot.txt file on the server itself.
I have tried to search for the file on the WHS itself through a remote connection but even then I cannot find it on the server. Even if I search with hidden files on.

My question is where would we find this robot.txt file on the home server?

I hope anyone can shed some light on this small problem.

PP3: Series recordings not showing up on TV Archiving series tab

So, I'm left wondering why PP3 got delayed and is still buggy now that it is released. I have over 50 series recordings setup in Windows 7 Media Center, but only 15 of them show up on the TV archiving series tab. I can see episodes on the program tab, but I don't want to have to archive each individual episode. What kind of ____ is this? I have a bunch of Heros and Medium episodes that I want to archive along with future episodes, but neither series shows up.

Xbox 360 not seeing all files in shared videos

Ok my Xbox through the video/server option in dashboard and can see some of my folders in my shared video folder of my WHS but not all. There doesnt seem to be any reason why, some of the folder it cant see have AVI and the ones it does also have avi. I have rebooted a few times and no change. I have also turned off the video media sharing and back on but no change. Is there a bug in WHS/xbox.. Thanks for the help..

Question on Restore drivers

I searched the forums and could not find my issue. I am using an Areca Arc 1231ML in my desktop. When I try to do a restore to the desktop I load the drivers ( I tried several areca versions ) and The restore would say it found the drivers. The problem is the drives do not show up on the storage list. Windows 7 on a fresh install sees the drivers and installs fine. Backup on the WHS backs up fine. What could be going on? In what way can the restore CD be so different? Any tips that I may have missed?

No Audio in Windows Movie Maker 5.1

I am trying to import video from a VHS tape to a computer using Windows Movie Maker 5.1, but I receive no audio in the preview or captured video, even though I can hear the audio in other programs, i.e. my ATI multimedia center.

I am using an HP Pavilion a620n, AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1G RAM, 7200 RPM Ultra DMA Hard Drive, ATI Radeon ALL-in-Wonder 9600 Pro with 128MB Video RAM, and Realtek AC87 Internal Sound card. I am using Windows XP Service Pack 3, and I believe that all the drivers are correctly updated. I am importing both video and audio through the ATI card.

The system recognizes my video capture device as "ATI T200 AVStream Analog Capture," and I set the video input source to "Composite," as I only get static with "TV Tuner." However, there is no audio whether I select any of the Realtek AC97 Audio Device (for any of the possible lines), nor if I select ATI T200 AVStream analog audio capture (though I can hear the static if I set it to this, plus the TV Tuner).

connecting two win 7 computers to each other to share one air card from verizon

I have two new Win 7 boxes. They both have professional version. One of them connects to the internet via a Verizon Aircard. I would like to connect to the internet via some kind of network with the other one. I only own one Aircard and don't want to have to purchase a second one. Is this possible. When I used win xp. I could do this, but I can't seem to accomplish it with Win 7. Is there anyone out there who can help me.

Excessive system folder size

My system size had been a steady 20gb since install several months back.

Home build system AMD 4050e in an ASUS 780G MB
System Sys drive 1 * 640 GB WD Black
Storage Drives 3 * 640 GB WD Green
Backup Drive 1 * 1TB Hitachi
One add in card, an internal SATAII I/O
All HD temps are very low ~ 26 to 27C in a Antec One Hundred case

I replaced the system drive with a larger unit about 3 weeks ago with the 640GB, It was a 250GB Seagate prior. All went well no issues. All drives and backups restored as intended. :-)

~ 4 days ago I had a home computer crash in the middle of it's back up sequence. Took me a few days to get it up but I did.

I look yesterday and the system drive is now 580GB.

I have checked for shadow files in folders\{1618D36B-F4E7-4360-B070-A32070519DC9}\
there are none.

I have checked the individual drives and shadow copy if disabled for everything.

I check the registry entries and they say "0" on the D:/ mount point

I don't save or run anything directly to the server that would bypass the shared folder system.

I have run backup cleanup and repair several times to see if could get teh system to clean its self up. This has reduced the value but only to 510 GB. I have most of my files duplicated (mostly pictures), but they only add up to 309 GB.

All three of my storage drives show 92% full. They were at 66% last week. System drive shows 5% full. Backups show ~509GB, really close to the system size but maybe just coincidence.

Any ideas without doing a full wipe? Appreciate any thoughts.

Problems with Remote sound and Windows 7

When remote comtroling a Windows 7 computer from the web interface I am given a checkbox for if I want to hear remote sound or not. No matter which option I choose I lose all sound from that computer's sound card until I either reboot the computer or do a direct local remote desktop login and select the remote sound option. Since I frequently use the web interface to control my Windows 7 media center computer this is a real problem for me. (I like my music and movies to have sound. :-) Is there another solution I am missing?

WHS On Multiple SUBNETS with static routes

My network Using a computer running M0N0Wall with 3 nic cards WAN LAN OPT1 Lan 192.168.0.0/24

OPT1 192.168.15.0/24 interface connects to another network through a wireless bridge and the OPT1 (3rd nic in a twin Computer running M0n0Wall.

This monowall box is LAN 192.158.25.0/24 and opt one on .15.0/24
Both routers have a static route on the opt1 interface to the lan interface of the other box and As far as I know the firewall is open through this static route.
I can access any server on to or from either network. Network shares of coarse don't work. Ping any computer as well.

I want to let users on the .25.0/24 network access and back up to my WHS box on the .0.0/24 network.
The fire wall on the WHS is at the moment OFF and I have set this up to any computer http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/whsfaq/thread/295498e9-de53-46c8-9d38-7f110bdb2aeb/ Except the remote desktop.

Tried to set up the connector today on the other network and it failed . If I opened a browser to the IP of my WHS :55000 it opened the main page. and let me down load the setup file. but would not find the server during setup.

Syncing My Docs, Downloads ect with WHS User Folders

I had a wild thought, would it be possible to use Mesh to sync My Docs on my client pc with a My Docs in my WHS User folder? Could this be used to create a poor mans Remote profile?

Non-pooled network drive on WHS

I want to dedicate a non-pooled drive on WHS to use for real time mirrors of security camera files. I want to be able to map this as a network drive on the security system computer so I cam mirror files to it. For non time critical data I will let WHS take care of that. I have not found a way to do this by right clicking the drive letter and then enabling drive sharing.

There is really no reason to have a server if I can't put my security camera files on it and it would be silly to have two servers one with XP pro and one with WHS.
