On my netbook, I made the network folder available "offline" for portable use. I did the same with desktop folders, music folders, and others. In all libraries I set the common network folder as the default save location.

Of course, there are 2 problems with the approach in the paragraph above.
1) No record locking to prevent file conflicts if netbook is offline.
2) Most painful, was that despite having gigabit ethernet, and drives in WHS capable of 50MB/s to 105MB/s sustained throughput, I found performance linked to network folder to be painfully sluggish for common operations. For example if I saved a large compressed file to a network folder (say \\server\Dave\desktop) it would take much longer to extract, than if the same file was stored on a local hard drive. (I created a l library of desktop, and used the same networked desktop folder as the default on all client pcs)
3) I tried using the "always available offline" sync function, but the computer still uses the slower network folder, unless the network is offline.

My ideal would be something like this:

-Personal folder files are stored on local hard drives, (such as C:\Users\Dave\Documents) and are mirrored on a common server Drive mapped to \\server\Dave\Documents.
-Files would be opened from the local drive to improve performance
-When opening a file on the local drive, the mirrored file on the network, and mirror files on the local drives of other PCs would also be locked
-make available offline could be used so the files are always available on portable computers
-of course if the client PC is offline when attempting to open a file, it is not possible to check for a lock on the network drive. this could cause conflicts, but perhaps a warning to the user would suffice, together with automatic syncrhosation of changed local files to the network, the moment the PC is once again online

Is it possible to so something like the paragraph above - to have the benefit of faster access via the local hard drive, but syncrhonising a common file set among all connected computers, on a common network mirror folder?Thu, 30 Apr 2009 20:10:40 Z2009-04-30T20:28:43Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/c199e651-19f4-4a1e-aecf-5d0483f14c41http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/c199e651-19f4-4a1e-aecf-5d0483f14c41cowboyehttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=cowboyecan you upload more then 2 gigs on a home server,
hello

i'm trying to upload a file thats more then 2 gigs, can you upload more then 2 gigs on a home server

without going threw an ftp, trying to go threw my admin acc.

am i missing something or not have something enabled,

thanks

cowboye
Mon, 26 Jan 2009 19:56:00 Z2009-01-27T04:10:47Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/dbd1e709-5277-48ce-90e8-c9664a317a29http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/dbd1e709-5277-48ce-90e8-c9664a317a29Craig Weinheimerhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Craig%20WeinheimerPlease add skydrive support for WHSWouldnt you like a folder on your WHS to automatically sync to a skydrive cloud folder? Fri, 23 Jan 2009 14:39:12 Z2009-01-23T17:08:44Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/2f4f05b0-762d-41c7-98ad-a04a55e19378http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/2f4f05b0-762d-41c7-98ad-a04a55e19378dennisv2http://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=dennisv2Windows Media Extender Am I missing something or is WHS a perfect fit for Windows Media Extenders. Perhaps the guys that developed the product feature set could explain the rationale and whether or not this will ever be added?
Tue, 28 Aug 2007 18:58:55 Z2009-01-12T23:31:10Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/6abd782e-e82e-43b3-82b1-8da8dbb2e668http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/6abd782e-e82e-43b3-82b1-8da8dbb2e668Eric Huberhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Eric%20HuberThe Backup Process Please consider changing the backup process to "Include" from "Exclude". This setup drives me crazy.

Thanks, Eric Huber.Sun, 11 Jan 2009 23:37:13 Z2009-01-12T13:41:24Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/ba7998e0-caf0-404c-9b16-283d5ad6112ehttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/ba7998e0-caf0-404c-9b16-283d5ad6112edear chaphttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=dear%20chapHow about bundling Windows Live OneCare with WHS ? Now that Windows Live OneCare is slated to go free how about bundling it with WHS as a Power Pack 2 release ??? If not, are there any plans to do so? I understand that there is, or will be a plug in for Mesh, but with only 5GB of storage there, I would much reather utilize the 25GB on SkyDrive.

I am also a Zune Owner. Currently I manage my Music Library from my primary PC and Sync Toy pushes changes to my library up to my WHS nightly. I am looking for the ability to use the Zune software on my WHS directly so it can update my licenses, podcasts, etc. I have tried to install the Zune software on my HP server, but it wouldn't install without a bit of trickery. But apparently the video subsystem included with the HP box isn't good enough to run the zune software, so I can't run it. Any add-ins available or suggestions to get the software to run?

Thanks!Tue, 09 Dec 2008 16:47:34 Z2009-01-08T23:39:15Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/5c5854a7-7937-4a3e-8de1-b44cf69389fdhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/5c5854a7-7937-4a3e-8de1-b44cf69389fdSWHoustonhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=SWHoustonDefender - How does it work ? Exchange 2007 has some great features that could be included in a home e-mail server. The ability to have e-mail, faxes and voice mail all in one inbox and have web access to that would be incredible. I admit, it's a bit bleeding edge, but I think it would have a market. Include the POP3 connector, and drivers for voice modems (for the voice mail and fax) and you'd have a winner in my opinion.

Maybe make this part of Windows Home Server Premium, and include a "lite" version of ISA as well. I can see Windows Home Server, Windows Home Mail, and Windows Home Firewall, bundled as Windows Home Server Premium, or Advanced or something like that.

Thanks,

Dave H.
Tue, 13 Feb 2007 15:33:16 Z2009-01-09T06:39:29Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/1436cd67-6fdd-447f-84ab-ca85d4bb7a88http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/1436cd67-6fdd-447f-84ab-ca85d4bb7a88SkipFirehttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=SkipFireExchange Home EditionSBS has Exchange, I would like to see WHS also have exchange. Even if it is only 10 mailboxes and cannot receive internet mail directly (maybe only through a smart-host), it would be awesome to be able to share contact lists with my family and share calendars.Sun, 11 Mar 2007 18:14:57 Z2008-12-29T18:29:04Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/a3bac913-e981-4d66-bad9-4cb0a3d2a026http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/a3bac913-e981-4d66-bad9-4cb0a3d2a026dear chaphttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=dear%20chapWHS should have atleast two versions and one of them should be "free"One version would be the current offering as it is and the other should have more of less the same features but could be ad-supported. Today many people would like to have all their music and video ripped and stored on a server, and easily accessible everywhere through different types of mediacenters.

My WHS has 6 drives, 2*500 GB for the system, with RAID 1 for mirroring of the system, so that the server can continue to run even if one drive fails. It was really hard to find a way to install the server on a SATA2 RAID controller, since no drivers are available from the Microsoft distribution of WHS. Even if you have drivers on a separate floppy disk, you will end up with problems, since WHS can not copy the drivers to the disk.

The other 4 drives are used for storage and they are ofcourse 4*1 TB set up on another RAID-controller in a RAID 5, making 3 TB of storage available, and still, one drive in this RAID-set can fail, and I have still all my data available.

When you have this set up, you also very soon realize that WHS only support drives up to 2 TB in size. This is really really bad, and I hope that Microsoft actually realize that is something you need to work on. If you rip all your CDs and your videos, and also start to record TV-programs, you will need to have a lot of storage available.

So, since the operating system in itself, that WHS is built on, does support drives bigger than 2 TB, there is a way I used to work around the issues in WHS:

I partioned the disk into suitable pieces, and mounted the pieces in each share. Not a nice solution, but it works, even though the WHS software do not like it.

Please Microsoft, make WHS a good solution for the home, without such stupid limitations, otherwise a NAS would be a better solution for most people.

Sun, 26 Oct 2008 10:56:29 Z2008-11-27T14:41:24Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/91555591-0afd-444b-b24e-bf76050971efhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/91555591-0afd-444b-b24e-bf76050971efHBVhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=HBVI Mac seeing folders on WHSIf I put an i Mac on my home network that has a WHS server will I be able to read, copy and edit the contents of the Shared Folders from the Home Server?
HBVThu, 20 Nov 2008 14:22:52 Z2008-11-22T20:00:40Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/cf7348d6-4440-4431-b9c0-fe12ee13851dhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/cf7348d6-4440-4431-b9c0-fe12ee13851dBolton Wolfhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Bolton%20WolfNAS drive compatability
Hi,

I don't think I am alone on suggesting this, I have found hundreds of comments one the web with users being frustrated with the same limitation. Friday my eval OEM disk arrived. I was running a home server using windows XP. I opened the package and checked out the disks. I had been reading about how to set it up and the requirements. I have a dell dimension 2400 and two 500G USB drives.I saved all my stuff to the one drive and disconnected it and put it away for safe keeping. I unhooked the other from the computer. Put the disk in the drive and nothing. My fault I thought I had a DVD drive. Luckily my wife was in town and picked me one up, under $30. Took the old drive out and when she arrived home within 5 minutes I had the drive up and running. LOL Next it told me not enought RAM. No problem I have another computer removed it from there and installed in another 5 minutes and started install. I needed to upgade the RAM in the other computer, 1G about $30. The fun part is I only have dail up in my area. So I have a wireless network using a wifi. It is a dail up modem with a wireless router. It has a LAN connections, so I hooked my cable from the computer to the router.I put the disk in the drive and the install started. It took about an hour an a half to two hours. The install went great no errors.
Next I went to my computer to install the home server connector software. There started my first problem. No connection to server. I started running test on the server. Nothing. I checked online for a solution. I used my driver disk that came with the computer to make sure the drivers were installed. Nothing. About an hour is my limited so I moved to a new solution. I shut the computer down and installed the wireless card I had. Started it back up asked for the driver. I put the disk in the drive. It installed the drivers the icon in the task bar showed up and I was up and running. Went back to my computer and started the server connector software. It was an easy install.I then hooked one of the 500G drives back up.It was an easy format. Then I installed it on the next computer. I had to order the RAM so when it gets here will be able to set up my 3rd computer.
I started the process for the backups and the updates. Went to bed hoping when I got up on Saturday it would be backed-up and up to date. I got one, the computers were backed up, but the server did not update. I had to work with that a bit. It keep freezing up. Finally I got it to start the updates. that was 8am. I knew with the dail up would be awhile. At 4 pm I checked it was done updating. That was not to bad. I am use to it with the dail up.
The update install was easy, was able to do that from my computer on the console. It download IE 7 and I was able to watch that from the console. It said it needed to reboot so I clicked restart now. For some reason it didn't so I had to go to the server to do it. I hope the updates fixed that.
After the computer updated I had to update the the server connector software. That was an easy process. I thought I could do it remote from the server from my computer but it did not work I had to update it from the computers. I then got my 500G drive and connected it to my computer. I copied all my files from it to the server. There was a lot on it but the speeds were great, was done in about an hour.So far everything is really good.
I made sure the user accounts were all set up and running. I found when I shut the computers down and restart I have to log back in for the shared files. On the log in I checked the save but have to log back in. I hope Microsoft fixes this so the shared files will stayed lodged in. Next I needed to get my anti virus installed on the server. I thought this would be a good over night download. I am running Windows Live Onecare on all my computers. I was running it on my XP that I was using as the server. Went to the server went to Live Onecare for servers. My first real let down. I could not believe that Onecare would not work on WHS. I know this is just an over site and it will be avalable soon.
So far I like WHS. So today I order the OEM. I don't want to set everything up and loose it. I hope that Live Onecare will soon be avaliable and that as we use it MS will fix some of the small problems. I will post more as I use it.

Sun, 21 Sep 2008 16:11:16 Z2008-10-05T15:19:01Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/db54b0da-3305-46a3-af5d-cb98bed32557http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/db54b0da-3305-46a3-af5d-cb98bed32557Bob Prochnowhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Bob%20ProchnowRecovering lost WHS system disk
If the WHS has enough storage on secondary drives, WHS should be able to completely reconstruct the system disk - from the contents of the secondary drives.

Based on other posts on this forum, it appears this isn't possible - and that recovering the WHS system disk - at best, would only lose some settings - at worst, would lose all backup data stored on the server (which is completely unacceptable).

Why not have an option for the WHS to backup its own 20GB disk partition (like it does for WHS clients)? Recovering the WHS system partition would then be possible.

And, why not have an option that would duplicate all of the data stored on primary data partition on the system disk?

Without the ability to recover from a lost system disk on the WHS, it seems we're now putting all of our eggs in one basket - and hoping the system disk never fails - which somewhat defeats the entire purpose of having file duplication - and using a server for file backup and recovery!
Sat, 23 Jun 2007 05:33:15 Z2008-11-05T23:39:00Zhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/4ef33756-7585-4ab6-a294-75418283b21bhttp://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssuggestions/thread/4ef33756-7585-4ab6-a294-75418283b21bSchaefsnhttp://social.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=SchaefsnRemote Access Login to Desktop ComputersWhen I login to Remote Access from within my home subnet I have the option to control desktop computers. if I login from outside my home subnet, i.e. from the office, it will not present me with this option. Is this standard or have I missed a setting.
