problem on install HPC RC2

I can't choose On the Select Installation Type page, option Create a new HPC cluster by creating a head node. Can select only one option Install only the client utilities. but I install AD and DNS Server on Master Node . Why on master node can't select option Create a new HPC cluster by creating a head node.

HPCJobScheduler crash with invalid job

We have a serious proble with job manager. We submitted a job using the "parametric sweep" link on the right of HPCJobManager console. Somehow the job details seems to be corrupted and it crash the console everytime we tried to look at the job details. We found that the service "HPC Job Scheduler" was crashed by just viewing the job details thus the console freezed. The "job view" command, with the errnous job id, also crashed the service too. Sometimes we can view the job details for a short while, but trying to do anything to the job (cancel/modify) crashed "HPCScheduler" services.

We looked at HPCScheduler.log and found a lot of entries like below.

2008/05/13 09:30:01 [5][RC] [Error] Unexpected error when process message for job 369. Detail: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

It seems like something in the database was corrupted. Are there anyway to fix this?

Right now what we do is to ignore the job completely, not clicking on the job, not trying to look at details of job. Note that, the job state is "Running" but the task state is "failed".

HPC 2008 naming / renaming of nodes / reset naming series

seems that reconfiguring the naming series, although with the same parameters, resets the naming series.

However it would be nice to decide which name to give at the point where I am assigning the node templates

Problem with Crashing headnode when deploying compute nodes

Hi

I seem to be having a problem when trying to deploy compute nodes. I ave been successful in installing 1 node.

The problem seems to turn up after the image has been copied across and the compute node tries to access the head node and fails. The Head node crashes after that (not th OS just CCP) evry time I try to start the cluster manager I get unable to connect and I need to re install the head node.

NOTE - I am running the head node under VMWARE. everything else seems to work fine. and I was able install 1 node. The problem only occured when I tried to install the other 3 at the same time. They are consitantly stuck in the provisioning state.

I am going to try un installng the CCP and re installing and see if that make any difference

bare metal deployment problem/compute node fails to join domain

Im trying to deploy compute nodes from bare metal, installation of Windows wents out fine and after the first startup the ExecutionClient.exe runs into problems; On the screen I see:

netdom join localhost /DomainD:fdy.maschinenbau.tu-darmstadt.de /UserD:******* /PasswordD:*******

(maybe this listing is not 100% exact because i was not able to do a screenshot, so i've copied it with handwriting)

The ExecutionClient.exe tries that maybe 20 times, and after failing the node wents into "Provisioning Failed"-state in the HPC cluster manager. I've testet NAT which seems to be ok., also DHCP and DNS seem to work for the comute node. I can add compute nodes manually to the domain with no problem, so maybe I would be able to delpoy my nodes manually by installing HPC pack, but finally that's not the way that it should be.

(I'm using network topology 1, head node with two network cards and compute nodes isolated on private network.)

Maybe anyone out there knows what do do, I would be glad;

PS.: I allready did one test-installation and everything went fine, i and i didn't think I id somethind subtantially different, so I'm really surpised by this problem.

unable to deploy bare metal servers : cannot find X:\windows\nodename.hpc.

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy bare metal nodes. I'm running W2008 Ent X64 + HPC server beta 2 on the head node. My compute nodes are booting and start WinPE. However, it's always failing with :

"The system cannot find the file X:\windows\nodename.hpc."

the X drive seems properly mounted and contain all windows installation files. I've added the network driver (bxnd60a.sys for Broadcom adapter) with no success.

My head node and compute nodes are bl460c.

Where's my HPC PowerShell?

Hey Nerdettes and Nerds, did you try to open the PowerShell(or any other command line tool) in your HPC Pack Start Menu folder only to have it disappear?

Well I did on my Quad Core Woodcrest client and all I saw was a brief flash as the command Window opened briefly then closed.

I'm sure it had something to do with running first Beta1, then RC1 and finally RC2 on the same machine. Somewhere something got lost. As I dug into it I found the root cause was pretty general to the command shell. To get the first clue about what I was running into, go to the Start->All Programs->Microsoft HPC Pack->HPC PowerShell and right click it. You will see a multitabbed window that has under the Shortcut tab a field called Target. Mine looked like this:

Well this is the command that will run to open the command shell window. All very nice, but in my case the environment varialblr CCP_HOME had gotten lost. I found this out by going to a plain old cmd shell and doing the following:

Now this is a fixed version. In the broken version the value of CCP_HOME was like this
D:\Documents and Settings\frankch>set|findstr "CCP"
CCP_HOME=D:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\

Of course that didn't exist any more after all my installs and uninstalls.

My fix was a bit heavy handed, but what I did was: Go to Start->Computer right click Properties, then in the left panel left click Advanced System Settings OK the Administrator elevation which brings up the System Properties window then in the Advanced tab I clicked on Environment Variables. Sure enough CCP_HOME was set to the old location, so I clicked on CCP_HOME then on Edit and pointed it to the right location. Closed the cascade of windows and tried it again and got my window. It worked but wasn't pretty enough for me. So I closed it. Went to the shortcut in the HPC Pack submenu and right clicked the HPC PowerShell shortcut and did the following:

Under 'General" I always check Quick Edit Mode and Insert Mode. I just love the double click to select the right click to paste feature I get with this. Under Font, I always select Lucida COnsole for a fixed size font. This makes editting scripts much easier for me. Under Layout I like to set Screen Buffer Size height to 999. You can never have too much history. I also like to set Window Size Height to 40. And of course under colors I color code the window to blue background with white text. Then I Apply, evevate to Admin and voila, I have a pretty Power Shell and am a happy Frankie.

Keep in mind you can do the makeover to _any_ command line shortcut with different looks for each one. You should see my bash shell......

Windows HPC Server 2008 - Improved LinPack Results

We compared the Linpack results on our 32 compute core Xeon cluster between Windows HPC Server 2003 and Windows HPC Server 2008 and we were pleasantly surprised by the nice performance gain we saw. We went from about 130 GFlops to 153 GFlops in a GigE interconnect cluster.

we just deployed the beta 2 Version of Microsoft HPC Server 2008 and recognized that the clustercmd.exe tool is not included anymore.
Will it be added again in future releases ?

Parallel Debugger with Beta2 and VS2008

Is anyone successfully using the parallel debugger with the V2 Beta? I'm following the "Basic Usage of VIsual Studio 2005 Parallel Debugger" document, start the "empty" job in the job scheduler, and then when starting debug from VS get message:

     "Aborting: Access denied by "HPC-1".
     mpiexec is attempting to use this node which was not allocated to job '14.0' by
     the Microsoft HPC Scheduler..."

The job running (14) is configured to use the node in question, and shows it allocated to the node. I'm suspecting something needs to be different for V2 Beta and VS2008, but not sure what. Help appreciated.

Install of HPC Server 2008 beta 2 pack fails on head node?

All servers in my small Xeon 5160-based cluster have Server 2008 Enterprise installed and are joined to a domain managed by a Server 2003 AD controller. The domain seems to be working as expected, in that logon as domain administrator is quick, as is logon as node administrator.

Undertaking the install of HPC Pack 2008 (Beta 2) on a cluster node fails at installation of SQLServer 2005 because of the failure to find x86_microsoft.vc80.mfcloc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_3415f6d0.cat and x86_microsoft.vc80.mfcloc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_3415f6d0.manifest files in a temporary directory under the administrator's AppData\Local folder. It sure looks as if the contents of the temp folder were copied from the installation folder tree, with the above files omitted, but that's just my speculation.

I have tried the installation sourced from a network share, and a local folder, logged on as the domain administrator and the local node administrator, always with the same results, though with popups pointing to different folders missing the files above, from time to time. What's going awry?

Copy files from headnode to compute nodes duing deployment

Hi,

I need to install extra application on ccsv2 but don't know how to do that. In ccsv1 I can copy a folder from headnode to compute nodes if I put the folder under RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Images\WINDOWS\$OEM$\$1 and run install command by adding command in the [GuiRunOnce] section in the ristrd.sif file. Does anybody knows how to do it on ccsv2?

Modify node template to install additional application

    We're evaluating Windows 2008 HPC server. One feature that we would like to see is the ability to customize a node template to install additional application automatically at install time. However, I found that the "Application installation" task is disappeared from task list. I tried to use "Post install command" to install our .msi base application (Autodesk Maya 2008), by creating a batch script in a shared directory on Head node and execute it in post install command. The command could run successfully on an on-line node, but not from the "Post install command" step of a newly created node. I checked the operation log and found that the command time-out and the node is reverted back to previous state.

    So the question is, what is the best way to debug the post install command?

    Also, I suspected that some services might not run at the install time which may cause the installation to failed. Is it possible to create a template task that'll execute command at firsboot?

Parallel File Systems?

I know about the Panasas commitment to a Windows port but I would like to know if MS has any plans to create a parallel file system itself?

To the community at large, are you successfully using a parallel file system with Windows HPC and if so which one? Is your PFS a software product or do you have to buy the vendors hardware as well?

This is a big issue for us.

Finished Job still reserving a node

I have a 10 core HPC 2008 cluster that I am testing for use with specific software and it works great. Much more powerful than CCS2003. I have however run into an odd behavior that I can't seem to get around:

A large multi-day job is currently running, and running fine. I wanted to test submitting a smaller, high priority job that would run quickly and than leave the long job to continue on its way. This worked great, but after the small job completed it seems to have held a single core (its minimum!?) in reserve and will not let the long job go back to using this core. I ran the small job again out of curiosity and the second run locked up another core. So right now I have an entire dual-core compute node that I cannot use for the long multi-day job.

Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated as resources for HPC2008 are still spotty due to its "beta-ness" and I have been able to find any mention of this elsewhere. I hope I am just dense and missed something but would appreciate any help I may get. Thanks!

Hi,

I need to install HPC 2008 pack on windows server 2008 beta. There can be thousands of compute nodes.

Virtual machines are deployed through scvmm (using syspreped templates). Name of head node cant be fixed earlier (At the time of syspreping the OS image) , so I need to install HPC pack as a compute node later.

Hoe can I install HPC pack through Unattended installation. Could somebody guide me for the same ?

[Note: I posted this in the "Feedback" part of MS Connect -- i now believe that this is probably the better place for this. Sorry for the duplicate post.]

We're just now trying out the Beta 2 -- i'm sorry if our issue is covered somewhere.

We just reimaged our system (i.e., installed Win Server 2008 from MSDN) that has been running Beta 1 for a while. So I *believe* that we're just going through the same installation steps . So we're just getting started, and we're on the "Configure your network" stage, and we choose topology #1 (the same topology we've always been using). On the "Select the network adapter that is connected to the enterprise network", it won't actually let me select the NIC ! It's one of the two NICs shown in the pull-down, but it won't let me select this NIC - it shows me "the selected adapter is not in a valid subnet for enterprise network" at the bottom of the screen. The "Next>" tab is greyed-out (not clickable). "<Previous" *IS* clickable, but clicking on it actually does nothing. we're stuck and confused.

[[ FYI: the "subnet mask" on this screen is 255.255.0.0, if that matters ]]

beta2 on core installation

Hi,

I have problems installing the hpc pack in a windows server 2008 core installation.

The installers fails when it try to install the .net framework:

"The required component Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 could not be installed.

The operation completed successfully."

I looked for information regarding the installation of the hpc pack on a server core installation, but I didn't find anything.

Is the hpc pack compatibile with the server core installation?

If so, how can I install it?

HPC Pack 2008 (April CTP) Fails during installation

Hi,

I'm running Windows 2008 Server(clean install) with SQL Server 2005 SP2. Initially I had HPC 2008 installed fine with SQLExpress but removed it. Now I can't get it to install period, always getting the same error. These are the steps I've taken....

Installed All SQL Server Components, including SQL Server Database Services and Workstation components, Books Online and development tools

Selected Named instance - COMPUTECLUSTER

Completed the install

Installed SQL SP2

Verifiied that Shared Memory and TCP/IP are enabled in SQL Server Configuration Manager

HPC setup.exe

Getting Started - Next

Accept Agreement -> Next

Create New Compute Cluster -> Next

Using Existing SQL Instance -> Next

Default location -> Next

Install Required Components (Microsoft HPC Pack 2008) -> Install

The installation gets to a status of "Creating Databases" and then bombs with

"Error -2147467259: failed to create SQL database: CCPClusterService, error detail: unknown error."

We want to add HPC abilities to our server. Does this require to install a new server ontop of 2008 or can HPC be added onto it?

Activation/patching task at the end of deployment fails

The activation task ( and potentially the patching task ) may fail if the proxy server is not specified on the compute nodes. The activation task and the patching task may need to contact a server in the cloud for which they need a proxy server.

to set this explicitly you can use the netsh command.

to see if the proxy server is set,

clusrun netsh winhttp show proxy

to set the proxy server name explicitly

clusrun netsh winhttp set proxy http://<proxy server name>:<port>

beta 2, Release notes and deployment Modes

Beta2 has a new default deployment Mode, ignore unknown PXE requests. Under this mode compute nodes will not be automatically captured in PXE.

The two modes are

a. AutoCapture: any compute node attempting to PXE boot on the private network will be captured in PXE by the WDS server on the head node.

b. Ignore Unknown: Head node will capture only ‘known’ nodes in PXE boot—the known nodes include any nodes already a part of the cluster. This includes any nodes added to the cluster via node list xml or any preconfigured nodes which contact the head node via node manager. In this mode, the head node will disregard any PXE requests outside the cluster.

This change implies, instead of the v1/beta1/CTP experience of powering on the compute nodes ( after completing the to do list on the head node) you will no longer see the compute nodes automatically captured in PXE, in the ‘Unknown’ state. You will need to go through the ‘add node wizard’ ( available via optional task on the to do pane and the action menu in the node management pane). To capture your nodes in PXE, select bare metal install and power on the compute nodes. Step through the rest of the ‘Add Node Wizard’ pages to accept the nodes and assign a template to them. At the end of the add node wizard, you can keep auto capture as the default mode or choose to go back to the default mode of ignore unknown.

The global setting for the deployment mode can also be changed via the menu. In the toolbar, Options->deployment settings, leads you to the dialog where you can change the deployment setting.

I was working on creating a PowerShell script for job submission. I know from an example (that I saw at a Pluralsight training), that the "new-hpcjob" (sp? doing this from memory) command returns a job object. But the help file (-full) doesn't say anything about a return type.

Will you please add it to your list to review the documentation for return types and make sure they're all correctly documented?

REMINST share not customizable in Beta2 setup?

It appears that the Microsoft HPC Pack setup in Beta2 doesn't prompt for a location for the REMINST share, and wants to put it on C:. This requires substanial free space on the primary drive. It seems that the Data directory is controlled by a registry key, but changing that seems to break a number of things.

At first glace, being able to use WDS from a single-drive headnode would seem to a plus oven CCS V1, which required two partitions. But what if I had the two partitions already and acutally want to use the second one for deployment (for example, in upgrade scenarios?)

Ideas?

Can't bring headnode back online

Has anyone got any idea about this issue. I setup a small cluster, with just 9 nodes. On install the headnode was also a compute node. I changed my mind about this and wanted to make it just a headnode. So I right clicked on the node in "node management", picked "change role" and selected "none", i.e it is just a head node and won't run compute jobs. Now I can't bring the node back online, the "bring online" option is grayed out when I right click on the node.

Is there a command line alternative that I could try?

Needless to say I have rebooted and it hasn't helped.

April CTP Crashes HPC CLuster Manager

When I try and go to Charts and reports it crashes the manager, and when I start it up it remembers where it was previously ..... which means it crashes again, you have to change the page before it can fully initialise. This was also a problem with the March CTP.

Server 2008 RC0 Activation Issue?

I have been running the demo of HPC2008 for over a week now and generally it is great! Lots of improvements over CC2003. However, I think the machines (I have 1 Headnode and 4 CNs at the moment) are spontaneously rebooting due to license/activation issues. I repeatedly see the large window that looks something like this:

Windows Activation
------------------------------
Your Windows license will expire in 0 hours

Back up your.... and install any version of Windows Server.

Then, a little later, when I log on it seems to have rebooted, and asks for an explanation as to why. Then gives me the same message window and around we go again. I understood there was some 30 day test period that I could reset twice perhaps. The point is, this may have already messed up an important test case I was running, but I am not sure.

I would appreciate any suggestions on stopping this for at least a reasonable amount of time so I can test. One option might be that we have an MSDN license and perhaps should go that route to set up the base server OS. Thanks!

Adding multiple nodes at the same time

We're trying to add multiple nodes simultaneously. However, for the sake of management, we want to add node in correct physical order. This can be done by gradually bring up each node and wait for it to appear in the node list, but it takes quite sometime to establish this.

Are there anyways to populate the MAC address of each node to force the node name in HPC Cluster Manager? If this can be done, we can just add MAC address and power on every nodes at the same time.

Do I need to uninstall the March CTP to install teh April CTP. Is there a upgrade path ? if not can I leave the SQL DB there and will it use that or will I have to redo all the nodes again .

Hi,

Installing the CCP on 2008 server fails while installing SQL server 2005 express. It also fails to detect SQL server 2005 if it is already installed. Any work arounds for the prb?

HPC2008 on XP64-bit VirtualPC

I have a 64-bit XP desktop, and have the 64-bit version of VirtualPC2007 installed. I tried installing the HPC2008 on it and it didn't like it. Anyone know if this is possiable? I don't have another 64-bit system laying around to test, and need to keep my desktop to test other 64-bit applications.
