Wifi Problems with HTC S710

I just bought the new HTC S710 last week. I can login to my wifi network and it shows all the data but it won't allow me to surf the net, download emails, etc. I unencrypted the network to try but still no luck. I can access the internet at local hotspots about 3/4 of the time so I believe the wifi does work.

Any suggestions? Is it a MS Mobile OS issue or compatibility with HTC's phone?

It sounds like your WiFi radio works ok if you can connect at public hotspots. And, since you removed WAP or WEP encryption, that should not be an issue. Couple of suggestions.

First, check if your connection is set to "Work" or "Internet". Make sure it is set to "Internet".

Second, if that does not help, turn your smartphone off and then back on.

Finally, if you have a working connection, you should try to turn encryption on again ASAP.

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it is set to "internet" and still won't connect. I used all possible combinations but it's still not working. I turned off the phone and back on again and even did a hard reset.

I also spoke with someone at ZyXEL, which is the brand of my modem/router, and they thought it could be an incompatibility issue with the phone and the wireless router?

I'm not sure if I've exhausted all the options or not? If there's anything else you can think of please let me know.

Hi there,
I was looking over the net to find a solution for the same type of problem and have come across your fourm.
I'm not sure where the problem is but I get the exact same problem. the s170 won't connect to my Linksys wireless router. All other devices around the home work well but not the 170. I can connect but there is no traffic allowed through.
Have tried the 710 at a friend's house and it worked well. He's using a Netgear.
Maybe there is indeed an incompatibility problem.

Hi Andrei,

I just wanted to say thanks for the reply. I think we've both encountered incompatibility issues with our smartphones and routers. I spoke with a tech rep at ZyXEL (my wifi router/modem) and they said it appeared to be an incompatibility issue. Good luck in your troubleshooting if you do find it to work eventually. I wonder if Microsoft could issue an upgrade to Mobile 6 or something that would correct this type of problem. I have not heard of too many problems like this with HTC products.

It was indeed a netgear router problem !

I upgraded the netgear router software and now it works fine!!.

Download the netgear router software from the netgear website!

ok... a bit of background first... I bought an HP Ipaq514 Voice messenger about a month ago. Been using it fine at home with a d-link wireless-g router. We recently bought a few htc S710's in work and decided it was time to set up a wireless network. Got a d-link router, but different to the one i have at home. this one supports 802.11b, g & n.

To cut a long story short, if we put the settings of the router to allow b, g & n for the 802.11 mode, the htc's can connect fine, browse the internet, receive email, etc, etc, but my HP can't. Turns out my HP only has ability for b & g.

When I change the 802.11 mode on the router to just b & g, my HP works fine, but the htc's show like they're connected but you can't surf the net etc.

Conclusion: it's got something to do with the 802.11 mode of the router yuo're connected to.

hello,

i was using my wifi on the phone the other day and then i tried to connect it now and it connects to the wireless but nothing loads, i checked ip address everything works but no page loads, my phone just freezes and tries to connect and find and internet connectivity

any settings or something anything i can do to fix this

Hi,

You will have to choose the connection for your browser.

1. Open the Internet Explorer on your mobile

2. goto Menu->Tools->Options->Connections

3. Select the network that you configured for WiFi (usually it will be "The Internet" for WiFi)

OK, had the problem:

could connect to my wireless router but not browse via Explorer or use other internet programs

solution :

On the phone under WLAN settings, there is something called Power Mode... there I changed from "auto" to "best performance" - My problem solved.. browsing at lightspeed and doing VOIP like there was no tomorrow. YA!

BTW, I'm having Zyxel something router

I had the same problem, connected to the wireless router, no problem, checked the router & it was fine.

Then changed the Power mode to "Best Performance"and voila - instant connection.

Yep! That did the trick for me too. Thank you all for putting in the time to figure this out. I started this thread over one month ago and with the "Best Performance" tweak I'm in business. It's funny how a 10 second setting adjustment resolved this problem after over a month of waiting to hear from back from HTC and ZyXEL.

I'm glad to see you find a solution for your problem. I don't know if now you can help me. I just got a HTC touch with WM6 and it just happen it doesn't detect the wifi connection at my office. Is weird cause mi friend has the same phone and she can get in the wifi LAN at office without problems. We put the two phones side by side, she can see the wireless network, I cannot. My phone otherwise detect every other wifi, at home, at the airport, even the ice cream parlor in front, but the wifi at office is always unavailable. I have tried everything you recomend here whitout success. What do you think.

Could someone help me, please? - I changed settings in my htc s710 as Kristjanp wrote and I was very glad because my mobile sees all APs (before it didn't). It shows that wifi is conected, but when I try to surf there is some alert in IE: "Can't find the website. Check the correct name and then try again." I checked sites which links are located on the favourites so I couldn't make a mistake . In the IE Menu->Tools->Options->Connections is signed Automatic detect the settings, and Choose web: Internet.
I don't know where I make a mistake, so I please give me some advice. Thanks for all replies

I'm having the same issue with the S710. I've read in a couple of places that windows mobile 6 can't handle a static IP with the S710. Anybody know if that's true? If so, is there a 3rd party app that can do it? I'm not going to DHCP.

I have a Sitecom WIFI-router 54G and HTC 730 smartphone and I could setup a link with my WIFI-router but was not able to brows the internet.

I have been strugling for days and now I can brows via WIFI as much as i can.

Unbelieveble that this powersetting is the solution for the problem.

I recently purchased an HTC Touch with WM6. I am facing some issues with Wifi connectivity. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. My desktop and laptop are able to hook on to the net – through Ethernet and Wireless – modes. However, my HTC connects to the Wireless and to the Internet only when I have turned the encryption off.

In the wireless router admin page, the current settings are:

Mode: Mixed (b&g)

Security Mode; WPA Personal

WPA Algorithm: TKIP or AES. Laptop works on both TKIP and AES modes.

However, the wifi settings on my HTC has the following options
WPA

WPA PSK

WPA2

WPA2 PSK

Somehow I am not able to get it working in the secure mode. I get this msg on the HTC “check your network settings”. I have tried the “Best Performance” setting as mentioned in one of the posts above.

Can someone suggest a remedy for this? Please note that I am able to access net in the unsecured mode – which means my wifi is working fine.

Kristjanp, robwi11iams and others here, thanks so much. For me on a D-Link 604+ wireless router the solution was to turn off "Turbo" mode. I assume that all these speed tweaks and enhancements on these routers are proprietary and whilst some devices (my laptop and desktop for two) are perfectly tolerant of the them, others (WM or HTC, don't know which is to blame) aren't. Anyway, I have turned Turbo to Off and all is well.

This has taken me 3 evenings of hair pulling. Supplier of the HTC couldn't diagnose and neither could HTC. I was being told to return the device. Crazy!

Thanks so much for solving the problem, saving sending back a perfectly ok piece of kit and generally being smarter and more helpful than all the professional support staff in the world!!

I have almost the same issue but a little bit weird.
I have an HTC S710 and bought a year ago a Dlink-524 routerto my mother's flat. The net is working well but when I tried to use the phone it 1.did not connect 2. did connect according to the phone but did not work properelly(nor surfing,no mails, no nothing).
There was one solution: no encryption, no coding, our net is free now for everyone but my phone can connect easily.
I have moved to another apartment and wanted to use my wifi phone here as well so I bought another router but the same brand and type.
The interesting thing is that the solution at my mother does not apply here and I am fully unable to use the net at home(by phone, as it is working at my computer).
My question is what can cause the difference between the two same kind of routers? The firmwere maybe?
Is there any chance to set up an encrypted network at our home(s)? TKIP,AES,WEP... all combinations are wrong.

The'Best performance' strategy does not apply to me, I have already tried all of them.

Another issue:
Do you know the Fring? I hope you do.
It seems like I am the only person who cannot set it up correctly.
I get lost when'configuring the services' I have my ID shown there but when I try to send it with my password to the system, after some minutes(sometimes only seconds) the system tells me it was unsuccesful, check out the creditians...

Please some can give advice!

My problem is quite similar to yours. I have an O2 Mobile Phone and a Linksys Router. I am currently connected but I cant browse the web with internet explorer mobile. Can anyone lend a hand?

I had tried all of the above posts but my HTC S710 problem was not solved. My smartphone's WiFi connection was done successfully. But I can't browse (with Internet Explorer / Opera).

I change my router with D-Link, switched over to Best Performance etc. etc. but problem till not resolved.

While browsing a Alert message displays as "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again." Here I use lots of url. But my device is sticking with same problem.

Kindly help me in this regards.

I'm sorry to bump this older topic.
But i'm having the same issue on my HTC touch 3G.

With me sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't without changing settings.

The best performance option is set.
Not that it matters, but i tried with or without entering the DNS server manually.
It connects, but i cannot even surf to the router, gateway.

It happens on any kind of router.
I'm at work now, where i surfed yesterday too without problems, but today it won't.
Yesterday i surfed at home, this morning it won't.

As we you guys, it connects fine, i get the IP etc .. but thats it.
I have the impression that WM isn't aware that the wifi connection is there to be used.

Seeing the number of devices it happens on, i'm thinking i'ts a WM bug ?
I've tried resetting the device, also factory settings .. removing the wifi profile for a network etc etc..

Same thing, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and i'm running out of ideas to trigger the working part.
Needless to say it doesn't work for any application then.

Do you think i shouldt return the device, you never know.
I don't think my 3G connection interferes in any way ?

I say it's time a hot fix is releases , because seeing as there is no update for my WM, i'm sure i have the latest version.

Any help ? :(

my HTC touch 3g has all the same symptoms, random ignoring of connected WiFi. Same has happened on different WiFi even in different countries. The power switch setting seems not to be the solution for this problem, (it may solve other problems with poor reception). but with the phone right by the router and getting all the signal it copuld want, the phone says it is connected to the WiFI but ignores the connection and wants to use phone signal for downloading all the time..
This is surely a WM problem has microsoft responded to any queries on this?

Hello,
I had the same problem. I could connect to my wireless internet , but could not open any of the internet pages. I did these two steps as suggested in the replies above:

1- change the power mode to "best performance"

2-change the "work" mode to "internet" mode (go to settings/wifi/network adapters/then change mode)

only after I changed BOTH of these settings, it worked!

Don't rule out the IP address that the wifi network hands out. My s711 did not work with some private address ranges but worked once I changed to a more common private IP range of 192.168.xxx.xxx
