Here is a link to a guide for WMDC that you may find helpful and informative.

Windows Mobile Device Center is the new name in Windows Vista replacing Microsoft ActiveSync, and provides overall device management features for your Windows Mobile powered devices for Windows Vista.

Previous versions of Microsoft ActiveSync will not install or run on Windows Vista. All of the features previously available in Microsoft ActiveSync are available in Windows Mobile Device Center, including setting up your desktop partnership and synchronization with the desktop. Most of the UI has been rewritten, however, in an effort to enhance the user’s ability to easily and intuitively find device-related tasks and improve the overall usability of those tasks.
