Proposed AnswerWM6.5 Bluetooth Safety Issue

I need a registry setting to be able to make calls from a toyota bluetooth system using my HTC Touch Pro 2 (AT&T Tilt).

    AT&T suggested I contact HTC

HTC says its a limitation of WM6.5

I can receive calls via Hands Free when the phone is locked, I just can not make calls.

I have the device using ActiveSync with the company Exchange server which pushes security to enforce the phone locked after x mins.

My old phone (AT&T Tilt with WM6.1) did not have this problem with the same configuration.

Does anyone else have this issue or know a solution?

    Cheers

I'm not too sure that statement is accurate WormGeo.  I have no trouble making any calls when my 6.5 device is locked.  I am using the Ford Sync BTW

Well you quoted two statements but didn't say which one you didn't think was accurate.  If its the first, (cause I know the second is accurate), I agree that what HTC told me could be false.

But I posted on this forum for help in finding a solution.

When you stated that you can make Hands Free calls when your phone is locked with Ford Sync, is your phone locked with a pin code (i.e. do you have to type in a code to unlock your phone when it is locked)?

    Cheers

If its the first, ... , I agree that what HTC told me could be false.

That is the one I was referencing

..., is your phone locked with a pin code (i.e. do you have to type in a code to unlock your phone when it is locked)?

That is an interesting point.  My device was not locked with PIN code.  It times out and there is a "swipe" button to activate it (Verizon Imagio).

However, I just went out to my car and tried it with a PIN code activated.  As soon as i started my car, the phone paired and I was able to make a call.  When the call was made, the screen activated as it always does but to "enter" the device to view something like contacts, the code needed to be entered.  So it is working fine on my end.

What I'm hoping is we get another user with the Toyota bluetooth system to see if it is an issue with what they have when it is used with a 6.5 device (preferably the AT&T Tilt).  I don't think there was any change in the bluetooth specs so I am unsure why it is not working for you.

Just as an aside, I can appreciate why you use the PIN to enter your device but for me it has always been an inconvenience.  I believe that for most, even though they may have sensitive data stored, if a phone is lost (or stolen), there may be a reasonable time before anyone does access your device and all the data.  If that is true, then the MyPhone service is well worth considering because of the ability to remotely wipe your device ensuring data  security.  There was a recent user on the forums that did just that and it worked ....

Jack... Thanks for the replies and testing.

The only other difference is that the security policy was pushed to my phone when I set up ActiveSync with our company Exchange server.

I agree that the PIN is an inconvenience, but it is required (and enforced) by the Exchange server.

This problem has been identified on the XDA forums (and others) but to date no solutions.

I will try a hard reset to see if the problem still exists before I configure ActiveSync, but probably won't find time till the weekend for that.

Yesterday, I asked my Exchange administrator to exempt my phone from the mobile security policy.  When exempted from the policy, I could remove the PIN code and with the phone locked, I could make Hands Free calls from my Toytoa Bluetooth Car Kit.  When I setup the phone lock with a PIN code again, I could not make Hands Free calls from my Toyota Bluetooth Car Kit, even though I had been removed from the Exchange mobile security policy.

Tomorrow, I plan on doing a hard reset and test without setting up the ActiveSync with the Exchange server.

OK... I did the hard reset today.

First thing after the hard reset, I setup the bluetooth connection to my Toyota Bluetooth system.

Made a call using the car hands free... success!

Made a call with the phone locked (start, lock)... success!

Setup a the lock with password (Simple PIN)

Tried to make call with the car hands free... No success... I get a Bluetooth screen on the AT&T Tilt 2 that says "Please unlock the phone in order to dial a call"

I would think that there would be a registry setting somewhere to bypass that restriction.

    Bluetooth about:
    Bluetooth for Windows Mobile
    Version 1.9.0 Build 4800
    HCI Version 4.84
    LMP Version 4.33031 (15)

    Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional
    CE OS 5.2.21849 (Build 21849.5.0.63)

Is this a AT&T problem, HTC problem, or a Microsoft problem?

I'm going to reach out to another mod to see if he has any thoughts on this WormGeo?

    Hi,
You can recieve calls but not make them when the device is locked.  This is the normal behavior that I have seen.

This issue is a combination of a Microosft and HTC issue.  Why?  Because Microosft needs to agree that it should work while locked.  By default the answer i've seen in the past is that it should not allow the user to dial the phone without being unlocked otherwise you are bypassing the lock.  However if they agree that you should be able to dial the phone while locked, then  HTC needs to be involved too because they need to ensure that their Bluetooth driver is still loaded and available to handle the voice request.

At this point, I would contact ATT and press them to address your issue.  They are responsible to support you and your device and they should contact Microosft and HTC to help resolve it.

I am having exactly the same issue. The company exchange server forces the PIN to lock the device, and as soon as locked the TouchPro 2 will not allow Bluetooth calls.
This is with UK supplied HTC TouchPro 2 on the UK T-Mobile network using the Mercedes Bluetooth adapter.
I had no such issues with the TouchPro.

Also, does anyone know of a way to limit the number of Outlook contacts that are synchronised with the bluetooth adapter ?
I used to use the JetWare utility on the TouchPro, and set it up so that only contacts with a category of CAR_PHONE would synchronise. The JetWare utility will not load on the TouchPro 2.

    Any help greatly appreciated.
