Strange problem with Windows Mobile 6.5 and music playback.
Strange problem with Windows Mobile 6.5 and music playback.
- All day at work I was trying unsuccessfully to listern to music - wether using Media Player or the built in Samsung music player, the device would play a few tracks then give up at the end of a track...
If at this time you press play it will simply keep counting on the timer, but wont play anything. If you skip to the next track then it gets going again.
I'm trying to replicate it now, but for some reason playback seems absolutely fine... maybe windows phone is allergic to my place of work? Of course it worked perfectly the day before...
The device in question is the Samsung Omnia II GT-I8000 if that helps at all

- I still cannot replicate Myranda. Although I am sure you did this, I might suggest going in again and changing the times from what ever they are currently set at. Just as a point of reference, this picture (see below) shows my settings). Change yours to these settings or if they are the same, increase them by one. reset them, soft reset your device then check to make sure they reflect that change. Now try to play and see if there is any difference.

- Additional - it seems linked to locking the screen... told it not to power off after not being used for 1 minute... but then that option would have been ticked yesturday so why now... hmm.
So far that seems to have done the trick, though it remains to be seen how this will affect the battery life... it's an OLED screen so doesn't draw a massive amount of power, and I know I used it yesturday for about 13 hours and still had 40% of the battery power left - and I suspect the screen was on for that time which would explain why it wasn't being a problem - today I was turning the screen off rather than just locking it.

Not sure why ... did you make a change then soft reset?

If the issue persists, get back and possibly we can figure it out. I'm sure it is not an insurmountable issue.

http://www.mobilitysite.com- Hi Myranda Rose!
Just checking back with you to see if you have been able to resolve your issue. If not, please let us know the current status so we can continue to provide recommendations and suggestions.
Thanks!
Thank you from the Microsoft Windows Phone Team
http://www.WindowsPhone.com/TotalAccess - Right back again.
Sorry, been a busy week.
But I've been able to identify at least when the problem occurs.
Playback stops (and not pause, but stop) when the screen is turned off - at the end of the current track. I couldn't replicate the problem because I was leaving the screen on and expecting it to die. The reason it was fine the day before was that I was using the phone on speaker phone on my desk - and so wouldn't accidently dial using my thigh like I can when it's in my pocket, and when I went to get something to eat I was using headphones and again thhe phone was on the desk. While trying to see the problem happen in situ I was doing the same thing and leaving the screen on. Between the screen staying on all day, normal phone use, and music playback of 8 hours I'm draining a 1500mAh battery in a day and a bit (needing to charge it daily or not having a phone the next day). The headphones I use at the gym are bluetooth stereo ones, so the extra drain would not be helpful.
I can think of no option that says "stop playback if screen goes black" anywhere so can't think why it's doing it... some sort of power saving thing? Mobiles are used a lot for multimedia stuff these days so I can't see Microsoft putting that in as a standard thing.
Incidently it seems onlt to be the screen turning off - not the screen being locked (it just changed tracks as I was typing)... but the screen will be drawing pwer for a whole day when it only needs to for minutes at a time.
Hmmm
Myranda - I can't seem to replicate the issue on my WM6.5 device (Verizon Imagio).
If I use the device speaker, it plays fine. After 1 minute the screen will shut off and the music playback continues.
If I attach a bluetooth headset that supports the Stereo Bluetooth Audio Profile, it also plays fine. The screen will dim then will go dark after a minute. At the end of a song, it will proceed and play the next track. In fact, I've been listening to my music for the past 20 minutes with no issue.
Is there something that I am missing that you are doing?
My guess is that it might be related to the headset you are using. Is there any chance you can try a different headset that uses the Stereo Bluetooth profile?

http://www.mobilitysite.com - I wasn't brilliantly clear about headphones. I've held off using my bluetooth set because of battery worries caused by this problem.
The problem happens whether I'm using normal headphones or the speaker.
it works 100% fine - unless I use the button that turns the screen off... interestingly - just tested it. Even with the tick box ticked for "turn device off if not used" and setting it to 1 minute the screen doesn't turn off while WMplayer is playing so I can't see if letting the screen turn itself off is any better. - I still cannot replicate Myranda. - Looks like a reset has fixed it as I'm looking at a blank screen and this is the third song.
Yay!
Thanks That is so very cool Myranda. I'm glad we were finally able to resolve the issue! Good luck!

http://www.mobilitysite.com- Well... I'm back again.
While taking the cover off and prodding the reset button worked it has become something I need to do every day - at least every day, sometimes several times a day. Now, while annoying it wasn't the biggest hassle I've ever had... after all, Samsung gave me the phone for free so I can't grumble at 10seconds extra waiting once in a while...
BUT! There always seems to be a but these days.
Now SMS texts seem to be broken as well - 3 texts (from different people) only arrived after 14 hours, two hard resets and turning the phone connectivity off then on again in the wireless manager... not only that, but the whole interface seems to be slowing down dramatically.
I like the phone - it feels nice in the hand, it looks great, and when working it's fantastic... however I can hardly say it's been a great experience using it... I'm now carrying around a piece of old guitar string to prod the reset button because it needs doing that offen I need a 'tool' on hand at all times...
Perhaps I should upgrade - Perhaps! It clearly is not a fun experience

http://www.mobilitysite.com - Not too sure about the reliability of SMS in the US, but here in the UK it's sometimes erratic. When there is breaking news that's important to the masses (X factor updates and so forth) some providers SMS wobble, taking ages to deliver, and in the worst cases, not delivering at all.
Upgrade . . stick with bugs you know . . which is the least painful! I have to say, upgrading to 6.5 pro has been superb. I have even managed to get Bluetooth based 2006 SatNav software to work even though the specs. say it won't.
Just one downside I have with it is T9. Compared to whatever the system was in my 5.0 phone, it's cumbersome and relatively unintelligent. That version simply remembered new words, the dropdown happening automatically with my spelling at the top, this one requires additional touches and sometimes defaults to it's version. I sent a quick text ending 'Beeg hugs', but T9 made it 'Beef hugs'. (Yes, I know, I should have looked closely, but quick . . ) The text was to a vegan! - I'm in the UK :)
But it was in this case the handset - imediately after turning on then off flightmode I got all my texts for that day... like the instant it realised it was connected to a network.
I'm happier with things like the T9 predictive text (though "beef hugs" is funny :) even funnier if the subliminal messaging meant that they ate some beef), the way most things work, really like media player having swipe gestures to skip tracks... and pretty much everything is big enough to operate with a finger - so I'm not wanting a hardware keyboard anymore...
I might get the HTC HD2 on contract...
