BlackJack 2 is not recognized by/cannot connect with Device
- I have checked every help file, numerous other sites and no one seems to have an answer. I have seen in these forums people providing the same answer over and over and no it doesn't work. I would assume that if it didn't work the first 50 times posted its probably not worth repeating. Changing from Modem to Activesync does not matter, it will normally recognize the USB device either way. You just can't sync with it set on modem.
My true opinion is shouldn't someone from Microsoft answer some questions? There are literally thousands of posts about this all over the net, and probably more I haven't found. If it is that big of an issue where is the Microsoft team on this one?
So, can anyone out there provide and answer that works? One that hasn't been posted yet? Also, please don't post a link to an article that does not relate at all.

- hmmm, I'm not sure what to advise at this point. For me, I've had no issues with "7" after upgrading 5 PCs but that is not to say I won't get any but so far, it has been a great experience. I'm looking to see if others have reported a similar issue and if so, has there been any resolution.
I would like you to try something for me just to see if it has any effect. The next time you start your PC (from a shut down), before you connect your device, do a soft reset then connect.

- There are indeed many post related to the BlackJack II not connecting and sychonizing. Unfortunately I do not have this device. i will send this thread to my contact at Microsoft. Hopefully she will have a fix for you.
Pocket PC Mauritius http://PocketpcMauritius.blogspot.com/ http://PPCMUDownloads.blogspot.com/ - Why don't you outline what you have done so maybe we can offer some assistance.
What is the OS on your PC?
http://experiencemobility.net http://mobilitysite.com - Running Vista 32bit, WMDC 6.1 and blackjack II with current Vista updates. It worked completely fine after all installation, however all of a sudden it stopped. Can not sync, does not charge using USB ports, and each time it is connected it says device not recognized. I have tried restarting on my PC and phone. The USB setting on the phone are set for active sync. I actually thought I was posting in a previous thread. Also, pardon my annoyance...very frustrating to spend a couple hours in help threads for no one to have any answers.
- Ok, so it was working fine then all of a sudden it stopped and now you get Device not recognized.
Have you made any recent changes on your device or desktop?
I might try it on a different PC just to see if it works so you can rule out the device.
http://experiencemobility.net http://mobilitysite.com - Unfortunately this is the only Vista machine I have. Other PC's are xp and recognize the device, but they are not set up to sync. No changes have been made at all to either.
- I suggest you try another cable since it is not charging the device via USB.
Pocket PC Mauritius http://PocketpcMauritius.blogspot.com/ http://PPCMUDownloads.blogspot.com/ - We're investigating. We are seeing a number of these same issues and you are not alone.
- If you have activesync setup on the XP machines then I would try it to see if the device does charge. I will tell you that there are a lot of folks that have this issue from what I can tell. I think it is an issue with Samsung's device (but that is just my opinion). The advice I would give is backup your data that is important and do a hard reset. I know that is what you do not want to hear but until we can find a resolution to totaly fix this issue, that is what I would do.
I will tell you that I just chatted with a MS contact that has the same device and she is having similar issues. She is looking into it with an escalation engineer and his advice was to try a hard reset.

- We haven't seen the charging issue replicated elsewhere, so I do recommend Linley and Jack's advice. We Have however seen some similar BlackJackII issues with the devices recently not recognized/not connecting on Vista (even though they were able to successfully sync previously) through Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC). From your Vista desktop, when you click on start, does the green circular Windows Mobile Device Center appear in your programs list?
Please turn your Vista PC volume on/up, (and if you can open Windows Mobile Device Center) and connect your BlackJackII. Do you hear your Vista system sound ping (kind of a "ba-ding" type sound) and your BlackJackII upper right corner graphic changes from battery to a plug graphic (right next to the 3G icon) when you physically connect via USB? - Apparently the charging thing was a fluke. I do have WMDC installed and in the start menu list. I do not hear a connect tone when I connect the device.
- When you connect your device, does WMDC show that your Black Jack II is "connected" or "not connected"?
- It shows that it's not connected.
Apparently the charging thing was a fluke. I do have WMDC installed and in the start menu list. I do not hear a connect tone when I connect the device.
So it is charging now?
OK, you do not hear a sound from your PC when it connects. Before you connect, if you open Device Manager and then connect your device, it it recognizes a device has been connected the list will "flicker" and change. You will see your device listed if it did ... does it show?
You indicated that it DOES get recognized with your other PCs that are XP machines. I'm assuming that you DID try to connect to those machines since this issue has occured .... correct?
You could try unchecking the Advanced Network Functionality option and see if that has any effect
I'm assuming on your device it is located in the same place as my smartphone:
START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS/USB to PC
Truth of the matter is that I still believe that a Hard Reset is the only "cure" at this moment.

Unchecking the "Advanced Network Functionality" box did not work for me. I've restarted both my device and PC. I've also disconnected/re-connect the device to the PC. The device is recognizing the connection to the PC, but Windows Mobile Device Center does not (says "Not Connected".
What is the next step in troubleshooting this issue?
BTW - I have a Samsung Epix (similar to the Blackjack II).
Thanks,
Michelle- With your device connected to your PC, I might try removing the device from device manager. Disconnect and soft reset the device. Reboot the PC and connect again.
http://experiencemobility.net http://mobilitysite.com Thanks for the response. But it didn't work. I am still not able to sync my Epix with WMDC. WMDC still says "Not Connected" when the device is connected via a USB cable. There are moments with the device does recognize the connection. But WMDC does not.
Microsoft should be paying my service bill since I can't use the device for what I intended to use it for! It's been almost 2 weeks now that I can't get this to work!
Isn't there support for this??- So when you connect your device to the PC do you hear a sound indicating that a devie has been plugged in? If yes, do you hear a second sound a few seconds later?
If you open Device Manager on your PC when the device is connected, can you see your device listed? If yes, how many places is it listed?
http://experiencemobility.net http://mobilitysite.com Do I hear a sound indicating the device is plugged in? YES
Do I hear a second sound a few seconds later? NO
Is device listed in Device Manager when connected? YES
How many places is it listed? ONE (Under "Mobile devices" - It says "Samsung MITs USB Sync")
Also, under "Mobile Device Settings -> Connection Settings" in WMDC I have followed the guidance here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-settings.mspx
Is this correct? Just ruling out the change I made here as a possible root cause.
Thank you for your diligence in helping me get this sorted out.

http://experiencemobility.net http://mobilitysite.comApologies for the late reply. I'm so frustrated with this that I had to put it aside for a while to focus on other things.
The change I made was following the guidance under "Connection Settings" at the link referenced above.
Boxes Checked in Device Settings Dialog Box:
Allow connections to one of the following:
->BluetoothAllow automatic device authentication
Boxes Unchecked in Device Settings Dialog Box:
Allow USB Connections
Allow data connections to device when connected to PC
When you go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-settings.mspx there is a screen shot of the Device Settings Dialog box. I just mirrored that screen shot and associated instructions.- Marked As Answer byJack Cook - aka Help_LineMVP, ModeratorFriday, May 29, 2009 1:46 PM

- Any additional thoughts on how to get WMDC to work for my Samsung Epix?
I've tried contacting my service provider, and they could not help.
My next move is to contact Samsung.
I've got to get this to work. My device is completely useless without the ability to sync it with my PC.
Thanks. - Thanks for contacting your service provider MLVB. I've "unMarked" this thread in the hopes that others will have suggestions since you're still experiencing the issues. Have you thoroughly gone through all WMDC tips that came with your Epix?
Thank you from the Microsoft Windows Mobile Team
http://www.WindowsMobile.com/TotalAccess - MLVB,
Do I understand you correctly, you don't have the "Allow USB Connections" checked? If not, then you do need to check this to sync via USB for sync'ing via USB.
I wonder if you first encountered this when Vista SP1 was downloaded and installed on your machine? When SP1 first hit, there were some customers who had issues with connecting after it was installed. I believe the remedy was to uninstall WMDC and re-install. You may want to try this, but before doing so, you should delete your partnership from the device and from the desktop, and then re-connect. If this doesn't work, remove the partnership, and uninstall WMDC.
To uninstall WMDC, uninstall both Windows Mobile Device Center, and the Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update from Control Panel. - I am having a very similar problem. I am currently running Vista 64 bit and trying to get WMDC to recognize my Samsung Jack (SGH-I637). I also have a Moto Q which I have not had any problems getting WMDC to recognize. I have contacted AT&T, HP (My computer tech support) and Samsung and spoken with their level 3 tech support. Won't know if there is a level 4 until tomorrow.
When I connect the Jack via it's USB cable into my computer it tries to upload the driver and fails every time. The error message I get in the Device Software Installation box specifically states "Device driver software was not successfully installed, please consult your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed. Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter #4 Failed"
So far, I have uninstalled WMDC from my computer numerous times tried to reconnect doesn't work.
Changed the Connection Settings in WMDC to every possible way anything on the threads have stated.
I have tried to change the USB connections on the phone.
Did a hard boot of the phone.
Downloaded Samsung PC Studio 3 for all the drivers, that didn't work.
Went and exchanged the phone for a different one.
Bought a bluetooth adapter and tried to sync that way. (The phone and the computer see each other that way, but WMDC doesn't see it and there is no syncing.)
Added a com port on the computer for the bluetooth and changed the settings in WMDC, still won't recognize or sync.
I've disabled all the firewalls and security software, reinstalled WMDC, still nothing.
Oh and this whole time if I hook in my Moto Q, it will still add it and sync it up. It seems like it is probably a Samsung problem, but not sure if anybody has any other ideas about what I can do.
I've probably put 40 hours into trying to get this thing to sync and I'm very frustrated. Any help would be very appreciated! - @DsJack
Hello. Can you go to this site and create/look at the driver/WMDC event logs? They are listed in #1 and #5.
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/wmdc/t-shoot-wmdc.htm
Maybe they will provide some insight as to why the driver install is failing.
You won't be able to connect by BT until you have a successful USB partnership established. Don't even try.
You can also try this. Make sure you are in an administrator account. Open a run box and type msconfig. Go to the services tab. Check the hide MS services box. Disable all other services. On the general tab disable startup items from loading. Reboot PC. Connect Jack and see if the driver loads. Could be an interfering program. If no help, go back and check normal bootup. - I was finally able to get the phone sync'd tonight with the computer...amazingly enough via the bluetooth. I know that the directions say you can't connect via a BT until you have an established partnership via a USB, but I was finally able to do it. This after talking to Samsung tech support and I thought I was going to have to downgrade my entire system from Vista to XP. Still not such a bad idea, but I'll wait for the next catastrophe. Thanks for the response fiat_lux!
- Well that is good to know. I've always told everyone that the USB connection was necessary. Guess I was wrong. Haha. Did you have to do anything special? Hey, just in case you hadn't heard, for two weeks you can go the other way to Windows 7 for a pretty good price:
http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-Windows-7/category/102 - I had the same problem as everyone else in this thread after I had to replace my USB Data Cable. I checked my device manager and "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" was listed under Network adapters. I uninstalled that device and then scanned for hardware changes and it reinstalled that device. After the reinstall, my WMDC recognized my BJII and synced perfectly. Hope this helps..
- Thanks for that tip Steve_1888

http://www.mobilitysite.com - im buidling up to ask the same question. i have blackjack ii and windows 7. i have done all the reinstalls. i see the charging icon in the top right. when i plug the usb in i do hear a connection bing. after i do the uninstall and plug the phone in to the usb i get installing drivers... it shows up in the device manager under network adapters... the program loads... yhe program is staring at me with the phone plugged in and says not connected. so i have all of the above working.. how on earth is it not showing connected?
the connection setting are as follows:
waiting for device to connect (i know.. me to:))
checked allow usb connections
checked allow connections to one of the following: bluetooth
this computer is connected to: automatic
checked allow automatic device authentication
unchecked allow data connections on device when connected to pc
the only difference between to day and yesterday is the phone. i got another bj ii to replace a broken but able to use phone. so basically no difference but now i
can push the wheel down instead of not pushing it down.
sobasically it recognizes it for a couple mintes then it decides it doesnt want to recognize it any more. but even when its not recognizing it.. its still recognizing it just not through the WDMC. What is the problem?
i have a headache! ... when i plug the usb in i do hear a connection bing. after i do the uninstall and plug the phone in to the usb i get installing drivers... it shows up in the device manager under network adapters... the program loads... yhe program is staring at me with the phone plugged in and says not connected. so i have all of the above working.. how on earth is it not showing connected?
Do you get TWO sounds when the device is plugged in? The first sounds then in a few seconds (or a minute) a second sound occurs? In Device Manager, is it listed under Network Adapters AND Portable devices?
If not, try disabling Advanced Network Functionality. You will find this under Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC.

- first of all that last statement does not exist on the blaackjack ii. second of all....yes it is listed under portable devicess and network adapters
third of all ....it seems that when you plug the device into the pc it automatically downloads the drivers need for the device and program... which i think there might be the problem. i unplugged the device and then down loaded the drivers manually off microsoft.... plugged the phone in and so far seems to work. i dont have a headache any more!!!!
- also.. not sure if this matters did a reformat to the phone...even though it was brand new.
1. turned off phone
2. push and hold on the up arrow
3. turn on phone
4. follow instructions. ....yes it is listed under portable devicess and network adapters
That is the most important item. If it is listed in both places then we know the PC sees everthing it is supposed to and the sync should work.also.. not sure if this matters did a reformat to the phone...even though it was brand new.
That probably did the trick since the device was listed correctly on your PC.
I am very happy that you do not have a headache anymore!!

It has to be there somewhere but probably is listed a different way or even usng a different reference name rather than Advanced Network Functionality.
With the release of Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft changed the protocol used to sync via USB from PPP to RNDIS. This has caused some problems with VPNs and other networking software installed on the PC you sync with. So with AKU 2.3, Microsoft added back the ability to revert back to PPP. You can use this option to change the USB functionality for ActiveSync 4.x as well as Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) to improve network compatibility. The USB Advanced Network functionality is available in Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1.

http://www.mobilitysite.com- I want to add to this thread (though I do realize it's a month old now), as I came upon this thread researching a similar problem.
My issue is with 7, not Vista, but I imagine the problem is similar given 7's similarity to Vista. I upgraded from XP to Vista earlier in the week, and it has had no problems whatsoever connecting to and syncing up with my phone over and over and over again over the course of days. Completed installing all Windows Updates, remained running smoothly.
Connected this morning fine. Then this afternoon, suddenly I get "USB device not recognized". So I tried:
(1) Disconnecting and reconnecting USB cable. Same error.
(2) Logging off and on again. Same error.
(3) Opened Mobile Center and Sync Center to observe status -- Showed not connected.
I then finally rebooted both the computer and the Blackjack II at the same time. This resolved the error. Thankfully, I did not have to reboot while holding the up key or perform any more advanced steps than simply rebooting both at the same time.
I must say, of note, for the couple of years I've had a Blackjack II, it has been incredibly, insanely buggy for as long as I've had it. I'm looking forward to ditching it for an iPhone soon as my renewal is up in December.
However I hope my findings provide a little additional data to run with for the next person who comes upon this thread, or those within Microsoft trying to resolve this issue.
Some other factors that may or may not be significant -- Between my last successful connection and when the problem occured, the following happened:
(1) Disconnected Blackjack II after successful sync.
(2) Logged off.
(3) My wife logged onto her account and was on the computer for a while.
(4) When she was off, instead of logging her off, I simply used "Switch User" to log in with my account while keeping hers logged in as well.
(5) I reconnected the Blackjack II, and that's when the first instance of the "device not recognized" error ocurred. From there, I logged her account off then followed the steps itemized above.
Hope that helps!- Proposed As Answer byDoubleOZero Saturday, October 31, 2009 7:17 PM
- Thanks for sharing your experience Double0Zero. Interesting steps and I wonder if Switching User was the issue. If you go through those steps again and it reoccurs in the same way, we would sure appreciate an update.

http://www.mobilitysite.com - Well, I ran into the problem again today. Connection had been working fine for a while, then when I connected the Blackjack a few minutes ago, the "device not recognized" problem occured again.
Rebooted PC and phone at the same time, and it fixed the problem again.
This time, no user switching occured between the last successful sync and the error. However, the computer did go into hibernation in between. - Strange issue!
Does it occur if the PC has not gone into hibernation? Does it occur if the PC is shut off and you log on fresh?
Jack Cook
http://www.experiencemobility.net
http://www.mobilitysite.com - Yes and yes -- This morning, I booted up (from shutdown, not hibernation), and the error reappeared upon connecting the Blackjack. It seems to be very hit and miss -- sometimes works, sometimes not. I have yet to really pin down a reliable pattern to it.
