Proposed AnswerWindows 7 Professional RTM x64 with Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 Sync Problems

Hello everyone,  I've seen dozens of other people with similar issues, but none of those solutions are working. I am running an RTM Windows 7 Professional x64 copy (from a school license). I also have an Alltel HTC Touch MP6900 with the newest firmware (Running windows mobile 6.1). The first time I plugged in my device after I installed the WMDC off the Alltel CD everything was working fine. I sync'ed the phone and all of the information was transferred. The next day, the phone would not sync with WMDC. Infact, the phone doesn't even show up as plugged in to the device manager, the only thing that shows up is the Alltel HTC USB Sync. Upon further investigation and after about 5 hours of messing around including the following:
Removal of Sync driver from Device Manager with uninstall device driver checked
    Reboot of Machine
Removal of both the WMDC software and the update from control panel
    Reboot of Machine
    Hard reset of phone

After completing the steps above, the phone reconnected. The sync worked for the first day and the next it wouldn't even show up in device manager. Since then, I have discovered that you can toggle device manager to show disconnected devices from the command prompt. I have done so and found that there were two copies of the HTC Touch phone under mobile devices. I have deleted both, removed and reinstalled the software and drivers, but the device STILL is not detected.

The entire point of my post here is the fact that I am adding between 10 and 30 contacts to my phone on a daily basis and saving information that I need at a later date to the phone. I cannot hard reset every single day and I need to be able to sync the phone with Outlook for this reason. I know that many people have had issues if the advanced network option was checked under the USB settings in the connections area of the phone control panel. I have it unchecked and have tried toggling it to no effect.

Furthermore, I have found that certain people reported that issues were fixed with connections by switching which USB port was being used. This has also failed to rectify my issues. In addition, still other users have reported that by toggling certain options within the WMDC connections pane they were able to get their phones to sync this has not resolved the situation either. I have tried downloading and installing the WMDC 6.1 off the Microsoft site as well as using the same version which is provided on the Alltel disc. I have also looked at user forums and information for the Verizon XV6900 device which *should* be identical to the Alltel device especially considering that these companies are now merging and will be sharing networks.

Any help with this issue especially a resolution would be most appreciated.

I'm still digesting your post to try to see if I can help.  I just installed Windows 7 on one of my machines because there are too many questions now involving Windows 7 so I had to finally do it ... lol  (yeah, I'm really late in doing it but all my Vista PCs were working perfectly and I just did not have the need to do it until now)

Unfortunately, all my PCs are 32 bit so I cannot directly answer why you are having the issue but I will try to find something.  But this comment from you needed to be addressed:

This might be a good time to consider two things.  First, go to www.dotfred.net and download PIM BACKUP.  It is a FREE program that will backup your PIM data just in case of a problem like this.  In the event of a trajedy (or Hard Reset), you can restore all your PIM information to your device.

The second item is to consider using the FREE Microsoft service called MyPhone.  It will allow you to back up all your Contacts, Calendar, etc to the "cloud" and gives the ability to restore to any device you have.  It is well worth looking into.  I like it a lot and I am convinced you will too!

Find out more here:  http://myphone.microsoft.com and if you like it, you can sign up and download the program for your device

The concern I have is that you are getting it to connect, establish a partnership and sync correctly .... but, the next day it is "dead".

After you sync successfully, if you do not shut off your PC and come back in an hour or so and attach the device, will it still sync correctly?

Is the issue only happening after you shut down and then restart the next day?
(I'm not sure where I am going with those questions but it was the first thing that came to mind ... so I'm asking!)

    Jack,
I have never restarted the computer, infact, the only idea I had as to why the problem was happening in the first place was driver updates from windows update. However, I have discovered that if I don't install the Alltel CD installation of WMDC and allow my computer to download a copy of the software off the internet, after a hard reset, it would still connect. However as you can probably guess the best solution would just be to get WMDC to work correctly. I did end up at one point with the sync working on my 32 bit install of windows 7 RC on my old laptop. However, this means that I have to copy the almost 1.5 GB PST back and forth between machines nightly to properly sync my data which is also a pain. What I am wondering is if there is some kind of issue with the WMDC and windows 7 x64. I had these same problems on the RC for windows 7 and upgraded hoping to resolve the issues.

I don't know the answer to that but think it is unlikely.  Now that I have installed "7", I'll probably start getting more in tune with issues but I have not seen any specifically like your issue.

When you did the removal of Sync driver from Device Manager and the removal of both the WMDC software and the update from control panel, was that when you installed the "fresh" download of WMDC from the Microsoft site?

I'm going to send a note to the moderators to see if they will jump in if they are familar with the 64 bit version.

I have done the removal of the Sync driver from Device Manager and the removal of all WMDC software from the control panel everytime I've gotten it to sync. I have never gotten the device to sync by downloading the WMDC manually from the Microsoft site. It will run the installation and then bring up the installing driver window. The driver window will look like its doing its job (its just the standard windows found new hardware driver window) and then it will say failed on the driver installation after about 45 seconds. I have done the installation with the phone plugged in, and with the phone unplugged and with various combinations of settings on the phone such as the advanced network functionality being on or off.

-Edit- I just backed up all my stuff to the MyPhone online and tried wiping the phone. The computer still doesn't see the phone device just the USB sync. I have tried 2 different cables both of which were working the last time I synced. Anyone got any ideas that don't involve the words "format" and "reinstall" and "windows" in the same sentence?

i am having a very similar problem with my samsung omnia, sch-i910 on windows 7 rtm x64.  I can get as far as everything installing correctly, the computer even acknowledges that the phone is connected but WMDC will continuously show that the phone is disconnected. Like you, I have tried every possible combination of installation and uninstall processes that I can think of and its still not working.  I thought that it was b/c my phone is runnnig a cooked rom, windows mobile 6.5.  It works on every xp machine i have tried.  I hooked it up to my bro's new computer running windows 7 rtm x86 and it synced up like a charm and downloaded and installed directly from ms update.  So it works on XP, 7 x86, but no 7 x64.  Ive tried everything even the "updated driver."  I will continue to try and figure this out, and post back if I can.  If anyone else has over come this pain in the *** please share the knowledge....

JDM, sounds like we've identified an issue here. Both of us cannot get our devices to sync with the x64 version of windows 7. Yesterday I spent about 6 hours playing with my phone and windows and nothing I did made the computer recognize my phone device only the sync ever came up on the hardware detection.

Ok i have some good news and some bad news.  Good news is WMDC is confirmed working with my omnia now, but on my wifes laptop running windows 7x64.  Plugged in my Omnia with the laptop having never seen it prior.  Windows update did its thing and moments later after setup completed the phone is now recognized and properly synced with WMDC.  SO bad news is its got something to do with my desktop installation of windows 7x64 and WMDC or a conflict with another software/hardware in that setup.  I am assuming that your setup is providing a conflict as well. Where and what is the question.  I have probably 6 hours of trying to get the phone to sync on my desktop.  Im going for an OS reload sometime during the week and I will be installing the Omnia/WMDC before any other software...photoshop, antivirus, office...etc.  I will even opt to not update any hardware drivers intitially.  good luck getting your issue resolved i will check back once ive completed the os reload, and let you know if its going fine and to see if youve overcome this yourself.

Can you folks create a new user account on your computers, logon with that account and connect the device to see if you still can't get the connection to work.

I will try that in the morning and let you know what happens. Thanks for the idea Linley.

    -Edit-
Linley, I created another user on my computer and logged off my main user account on this box. I then logged in under the new username, but to no avail. The computer recognized the USB sync cable but doesn't see the phone itself. The device sync'ed up nicely to my laptop last night after copying my .pst from the desktop to the laptop and then back after syncing. I think the problem here is either with the driver itself, or something in the HAL for Windows 7 x64. Question for jdmsouth and others with the same issue... have you guys had to remove Itunes because your CD driver was "Corrupted or missing"? I've had to do that on RC and RTM.

jdmsouth, i am willing to bet if you plug the omnia back into the same laptop it won't work now. Thats what's happened to all 3 of the machines that I have that have x64 RTM or RC on it. After the initial detection and sync the computer won't recognize it again.

How much would you like to bet?  Just playin.  I plugged it in last night when i was going to bed just to see if it would work and it did.  WMDC recognized the phone and I could browse the file system and sync with outlook if I wanted.  I didnt try to  sync with outlook just having WMDC say the phone was connected was enough to help me get a good nights sleep.  Back to the desktop and WMDC says disconnected when the phones plugged in...as usual.  Took your advice and once again tried it on the laptop that I used last night.  Still working, and i shut the laptop down when i went to sleep.   So its still detecting fine in WMDC on the 7 x64 laptop.

And also I havent had to remove Itunes for any reason.  Both my desktop and her laptop have itunes installed, we use symantec corporate antivirus, logmein is installed on both so i can remote from anywhere with internet.....Both have office 2007...pretty much both computers have the same stuff installed. all she does is browse the web with hers....I just loaded this machine with 7 x64 so a reinstall will not be much of a hassle.  I dont have the time to do it until this weekend though.

I wouldn't bother, I reloaded twice already to try to make it work. It worked 1 time both times I reloaded and didn't work afterwards. I sure wish I knew what the problem was.

It synced no problem with a desktop running 7 x86 with almost identical hardware setup as my 7x64 desktop.  only difference the cpu.  My wifes laptop after pluggin in the phone about 10 times is still being recognized by WMDC.  I am almost certain its something to do with the install here on my desktop.  I cannot be 100% sure but my experience as a computer technician would lead me to believe this.  Every other machine I have tried it works on no matter the OS.  But your issue it working once then never again is truly concerning.  My phone has not once been recognized by WMDC on my 7 x64 desktop.  So our problems although similar are in fact slightly different.  If i were you i would start unplugging any unnecessary peripherals...ie card reader, front panel usb, dial up modem, anything that could possibly be causing some sort of underlying conflict.  I would even suggest running memtest... it couldnt hurt.  Ive seen crazier things happen.  As for myself im still conviced a reload will fix this issue I am having, but I am going to continue to monitor this thread for updates and a possible fix...

just finished building my HTPC, its running windows 7 x64 aswell, tried the phone on it for giggles and well its working there. absolutely no problems.  i have yet to reformat my desktop, i just dont have the time to do it right now too much data to move around.  Im still quite sure that its a conflict within the system here somewhere on my desktop.  hoping that the reload will fix it because this is where i spend the majority of my time,  kinda sux if i have to break out a laptop or go to another computer just to play with my phone...

Anyone come up with anything new? I've been at it on and off for over 3 months now and I have pretty much run out of ideas. I've even messed with deleting the association information for the device in the registry. The biggest problem is at this point the computer never even sees that the phone is connected. It sees the USB Sync device when I plug the phone in but the phone never gets detected. If I manually install the device driver for the phone, it still doesn't see it and says the device cannot be found.

I have a similar problem only with Vista 64.  I purchased a new model HTC running Windows Mobile 6.5 while in Hong Kong.  The Sync Center in Vista will not recognize the new phone.  I deleted the driver and reconnected the phone but the Sync Center still does not come up.  It seems similar to the problems with 7/64.  I can see the phone is communicating on the home screen of the phone and the device shows when My Computer is open.  It shows as a Portable Device.  I can even explore the phone from my computer.  However, Sync Center never recognizes the device.

    No sync is possible.

Perhaps it's the 64 bit machine?  As this same problem occurs with Vista.  I thought it had to do with the fact that the phone is running Mobile 6.5.

It's rather disappointing that two Windows devices cannot sync.  Any other ideas?

    Thanks All!

I was having a similar problem with my t-mobile htc touch pro 2 and not syncing up with my computer running win 7 64 bit. it would recognize my memory card but not my phone. It wouldnt even pop up in WMDC as connected. I cam accross this forum that helped me: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobileactivesync/thread/c9a92389-0ec0-4555-a858-15c1512cbc94.

    1) Open the "ActiveSync" application on the phone.
    2) Click "Menu" at the bottom of the screen.
    3) Click "Connnections...".
    4) CHECK the checkbox labeled "Synchronize all PCs using this connection" (When cradled).
    5) Select USB in the dropdown.
    6) Press OK.
    7) Reconnect to your computer.

Well I too am and have been running Windows7 for a while now, and would like to say that i think this has more to do with other software on the phone. My phone was working for almost a year no issue, and then got some updates for the phone software, like MS Phone, and Tag reader... so it could just be another program is holding that function of the phone, and we dont know how to kill it. :(

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I downloaded the MDC and installed it. I connected my Omnia sch-910i and windows 7 detected an unknown device. I read this thread and thought about all the information. I un-installed MDC, re-booted my PC and re-installed MDC. When I connected my phone I got the same result.

After thinking about this for about 30 minutes, I decided to do some basic troubleshooting. I am a system builder, after all.

The first thing to do was to rull out potential cables and USB port problems. So, unplugged my phones USB cable from the front USB and plugged it into one of the rear ports.

I have not had a problem since; even from the front ports!

I hope this helps at least some of you.

I wish it was that easy for me. This thing just doesn't want to play nice. I have tried everything that has been suggested here and elsewhere and combinations of stuff that people haven't even suggested yet. I'm pretty sure its some kind of problem with the Windows 7 x64 and WMDC. If I download the full install of 6.1 for x64 from the WMDC website and run the install the driver install Window that comes up as the installation finishes fails every time and I don't know how to fix that either. If anyone has any ideas here let me know.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as well, fresh install and connected my HTC Touch Pro and nothing.  Previously I was running Windows 7 RC1 with the same issue and for the longest time searched every thread I could find on the internet about this, tried everything.. very frustrated like most with this issue.

Turns out one of the usb ports on the front of my case was the culprit and thank you Jim Drosdick for posting your suggestion.  As soon as I connected to one of the ports in the back of my pc feeding directly off the motherboard BAM! installing drivers, and listed as PocketPC USB Sync in Device Manager under Mobile Devices and again under Devices and Printers as Generic Serial under the section for Unspecified devices.

Curious, I tried reconnecting to either of the front panel usb ports, and found only one works to reconnect the Touch Pro.  Turns out those two front panel usb ports use the same connector to the motherboard, one of the ports is just physically gone bad while the other is fine, ok case solved.

Not quite, why is the device now working on the front panel good usb port when for all eternity I couldn't get it to work?  Any USB gurus out there?

I am having the same problem.  Had a Sprint PPC-6700 (running Windows Mobile 6.1) that was connected to Windows 7 Ultimate x64, syncing with no issues.  I just got a Sprint Touch Pro (PPC-6850) which is also running Windows Mobile 6.1, and I have tried everything to get it to work to no avail.  Interestingly enough, I can take the Touch Pro over to the Media Center (which is running Windows 7 Ultimate x86) and it connects, installs WMDC, and syncs.  Thinking it was a problem with the old phone being installed before the new phone, I tried putting a different hard drive on the x64 machine and reloading Windows 7 x64.  When I connected the Touch Pro I had the same problem as before.  I also have tried the Touch Pro on rear USB ports, on the same USB port the working PPC-6700 was connected to, and even using the same USB cable the PPC-6700 was using.  I have also done a hard reset on the Touch Pro.  This seems to be a fundamental incompatibility between the Touch Pro and the x64 version of Windows 7.

I do believe I have a solution! I had the same problem till I tried this.

    Go to "settings".

Click "all settings" at the bottom of device on the HTC touch pro 2. May be different for others.

Go to "connections" at the bottom of device.

    Select "USB to PC icon"

Under "activesync (sync with outlook)" you will find "enable faster data sychronization" Uncheck the box or disable it and then contact prettyboywithends @ yahoo . com to send him $25 bucks if it solved the problem. Or you can call MSM customer service.

    That should do it.

I'm not a savy as the rest of you  (72 and sometimes slow on the uptake). Any way, I'm running Windows XP Media Center. I downloaded the Windows Upgrade Advisor to check if my computer is ok for upgrade to Windows 7. One of the alerts I received was "Microsoft ActiveSync version 4.5.5096.0, Microsoft Corporation...Not compatable...This version of the program will not work on Windows 7. Visit the publisher's website for a possible solution.
That's my contribution to you, hope it helps.
I think I will stay with what I have, unless you come up with a good solution

Hello, I am having the same problems as what's described here and i'm getting really frustrated.
On my notebook with Vista 64x it works perfectly, but on my new pc with W7 prof x64, it won't :(  I've tried everything..

I read something about the intel chipset p55 and the iPhone, it can't sync either.
Now, i have that chipset, maybe is that the possible problem?

I follow this thread every day and see out to a solution..

    Possible Solution!

Very interesting Thinos...I am also on a P55 chipset.  I found some suggestions (regarding the iPhone) to turn on C-state capability in the BIOS.  I did this, and the HTC Touch Pro will now sync properly.  Even still, it only seems to work on the rear USB ports.  When I tried moving it to the front USB, it wouldn't even connect.

    Hope this helps everyone!

But, it's ofcourse bad to fix this problem on this way, doesn't need this a report to intel or windows?

I can't find anything related to CState in the bios on my motherboard (I have an x-58SLI [EVGA]). This worked fine with Windows Vista x64. Same hardware and everything. I can't think of ANYTHING else to try. I have updated the bios, updated the chipset drivers... I am at a loss.

I have the exact same problem.

I've recently upgraded from Vista to Window 7 64bit last week.  The HTC Touch Pro 2 was syncing fine in Vista but after the upgrading to Windows 7 it will not recognise my phone.  I've tried everything, removed software, remove drivers, rebooting, changing phone settings as described above, but can not get the bloodly thing to work.  I've spent days working on this to find a solution to the problem.

When the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adaptor installs from Windows update or from the CD provided with the phone the driver says:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)".  This is the route cause of my problem.  If we could find out why when installing the Generic RNDIS driver the software fails to install properly then maybe we could find a solution to this irrating problem.

One thing I did uncover, is the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adaptor software (drvupdate-amd64.msi) is the same for Vista as it is for Windows 7.  So why doesn't it recognise my phone as it did in Vista?  and why does it fail to load properly?  Is there a security settings problem, missing componets, missing updates that is causing the device driver to fail? Need to get to the bottom of why its failing, but don't know how to debug it further.  Any suggestions?

The solution offered by Prettyboywithends above does not work for syncing contacts.  When I disable the "enable faster data sychronization" in the USB to PC connection settings it creates a "PocketPC USB Sync" device in the device manager.  I can not get a sync partnership with the phone with Sync Centre when I do this.  If anyone has done this I would be interest in learning how to get Sync Centre to talk to the "PocketPC USB Sync" device.

As for changing the BIOS settings, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop which doesn't allow me to change the CState setting as highlighted in previous solutions.  This may be the solution to the problem for some people, but its not a solution for all of the users.

If anyone could provide further information this would greatly be appreciated.

I have the same problem with my Tmobile Dash.  From these posts, look like no one has found a solution yet.

This is really sad when you have two pieces of latest softwares from the same company and they do not work together.  May be Microsoft need to spend more time testing their own softwares to make sure they work with each other.

This type of issue which caused many frustration hours is what drive people toward the iphone.  I don't think I have heard anyone complains that Mac OSX Leopard and Snow Leopard not able to recognize the iphone.

I don't know if this is a solution or not, becauise I haven't yet shut down either my iPAQ 211 or my Win 7 PC, but...

just on a hunch, I installed most of the Microsoft urgent and important updates and, come to think of it, most of the optional ones too. I rebooted both my PC and my iPAQ and, after a longer than usual wait, everything started up as if there had never been a hiccup before. I have not idea which update/s did the trick, but I'm holding my breath until I restart tomorrow a.m.

Man, I hope this helps us all.
