Proposed AnswerSamsung Epix WM 6.1 and Exchange Server

I have a new Samsung Epix with WM Professional 6.1.  I am having some difficultly with syncing to the company Exchange Server.  Much of the time, I do not have a problem but a couple of times per day the auto sync process seems to stall and I stop receiving emails.

When this occurs, I get the following support code on the ActiveSync window: 0x80830006.  I can manually force the phone to sync and I am successful in downloading the email.  This appears to happen more frequently in the evenings or on weekends when email traffic is generally low.

I have a Motorola Q9h with 6.1 and this same thing occurs.  When I try to use an old Samsung Blackjack with 6.0 installed, I never have an automatic ActiveSync issue.  I have called Samsung, Motorola, and AT&T and no one have been able to help.  They do not even seem to have any understanding what the error code that is being generated even means.

In my last call to AT&T, they suggested that I contact Microsoft.  This is what I am doing now.  If no luck here, I guess I will just return the phone and try an iPhone.

Note that I have done a master reset of the phone and reconfigured the phone a couple of time with no change in behavior.

    Any help would be appreciated.

This could be connectivity related.  I have some devices on AT&T and many times thoughout the day my internet failes to work and I exchange errors.  How's the signale when this occurs?  Also if it happens again try to launch Pocket IE and see if you can access anything on the internet.

I wish it was that simple.  I am beginning to think that there is some issue that is specific to WM 6.1.  I previously used a Motorola Q9h with WM 6.0 and never had an issue with wireless ActiveSync with the Exchange Server.  My problems began when I upgraded the software to WM 6.1.  The problem continued when I purchased a new Samsung Epix running 6.1 as well.

I have tested an old Samsung Blackjack running WM 6.0 and it never has this stalling/error message problem.  I tried a Apple iPhone for a couple of days using the Exchange server client on that phone and went a couple of days with no issue.  When I returned to the Samsung Epix the problem returns.  I have spoken to AT&T, Motorola, and Samsung technical support and no one has a solution.  None of the technical support teams even seems to know what the specific error code, 0x80830006, even means.

Maybe it is time to give Blackberry a try.

I have had the problem with two different phones running WM 6.1 (Motorola Q9h and Samsung Epix).  I still have not resolved this issue.  It is pretty frustrating.  I see that some other people have begun to complain that they are also receiving this same error code.  On one site someone responded that the problem was with the..."WBXML containing an invalid or unsupported public id".  I have no clue as to what this means or what can be done to address the situation.

    Hi,
Do you have any description that is displayed with the error code?  Have you tried seeing if it occurs with a specific type of data such as calendar, contacts, tasks or inbox?

How much data are you synchronizing?  (how many days of e-mail and about how many items, # of contacts, # of days of the calendar, etc).

    Hi,

I’ve just come across this issue whilst setting up a Samsung i780

Basically the issue of 0x80830006 is either caused by the version of active sync or the underlying OS.

For reference; I noted a difference on the active sync exchange setup pages. On the latest build you are prompted for an email address at the start of the process, where as on the old builds you’re asked for a server address.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to resolve the problem on the new build and have downgraded the Samsung to an earlier version. I’m happy to report it now works.

    Good luck!

    Marc

I think you are right in that the issue occurs only on phones with WM 6.1.  Earlier versions (5.0/6.0) do not seem to have the issue.  I doubt there is a way to move down to 6.0 on the Samsung Epix.

I think will need to struggle with this for a while until I find a way to another type of phone to sync with the exchange server.  Maybe a Blackberry or iPhone.

The odd thing is that the error code generated by the phone does not seem to point anyone towards a solution.

Did you ever manage to find a fix for the WM 6.1 sync issue (0x80830006) in your environment? Most WM 6.0 devices are end of life now and having to rollout 6.1 and 6.5 devices is looming once again for me. :o(

     Proposed Answer
Eureka! After a number of hours of banging my head against the wall I finally came across the reason why I was getting the support code: 0x80830006 during synchronisation (lack of synchronisation to be precise)

For reference, the full WM6.1 error is:
Result: Synchronization could not be completed. Try again later.
    Support code: 0x80830006

    My basic topology is: Device Samsung i780 WM6.1 > ActiveSync > Checkpoint SecureClient Mobile > Mobile Network (O2) > Checkpoint R70 firewall > Exchange 2003 SP2

Cause : WM6.1 automatically configures your network based on the GSM network providers auto config. The automatic configuration enables routing of traffic via a proxy, however the proxy does not fully support VPN protocols/the proxy will route VPN traffic incorrectly.

Resolution for 0x80830006: Disable Automatic GSM Network Proxy on WM6.1

START: Settings : Connections : My Wap Networks : Edit My Proxy Server : Un-tick “This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet” and click OK.

Note: make sure you Do Not un-tick “This network connects to the Internet”
There’s no need to reboot the device after disabling the proxy, however it’s best practice to do so.

It’s worth noting that if you use a Vodafone Sim you will get a slightly different Support code:   0x85010009

I believe the even though the cause and resolution for a Vodafone Sim is the same. The different error code is due to the differences in the network proxy’s and how they try (with varying degrees of unsuccessfulness) to route the VPN traffic.

A few notes regarding Exchange 2003 and WM6.1

If you intend to use the ActiveSync SSL Exchange Server option over the VPN will encounter an invalid certificate issue, if using IP for your Exchange server address. There are two ways to combat this problem.

    1. Use the DNS resolvable name, assuming that’s possible.
    2. Add a host lookup to the WM6.1 registry. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/199370

You’ll need an IPv4 Hex calculator for this.

You will also need to ensure that your Exchange OMA is accessible and fully functional. Simply try browsing to http://servername/OMA from your Device, if you get a very basic outlook list view, that should indicate that OMA is working fine.

    Good luck
