AnswerHelp with Syncing windows mobile 6.1 to outlook contacts.

I have a windows mobile 6.1 phone.  I am running outlook 2007 on vista ultimate 32bit.  My problem is that I had been using an hosted exchange server with 4smartphone.com.  Two things have happened.
    1.  I stopped using 4smartphone.
    2. my computer was stolen.

So all my contacts are on my phone.  I am trying to sync the phone with my new computer and outlook.  If I reset my phone I lose all my contacts.  When I run windows mobile sync center it doesn't give me the option to sync anything but files and media.  On the device in active sync all the options are greyed out and it keeps trying to sync with the exchange server which is no longer set up.

What do I do?  I need the contacts off of my device or I will lose thousands of contacts.  Please help.

Hello. I guess I am still a little confused. Did the WMDC on this computer come pre-installed? Are you sure it is WMDC 6.1, the current version? Have you ever set up a partnership with the phone on this computer? I'm surprised a WM6.1 phone did not come with WMDC 6.1 on the getting started CD. Anyway, that error message on the phone is strange that it does not detect WMDC, yet it has connected to your computer, e.g. you can explore the device (view files). I think I would go to control panel to uninstall WMDC. Reboot the computer. Download the current version WMDC 6.1 from here and install the 32-bit version:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/microsoft/device-center-download.mspx

Make sure you are in an administrator account. Once you get it installed, plug in the phone and it should go through the new partnership wizard. Hopefully your sync options will be there to select.

Also, on the phone, did you delete the 4smartphone exchange server account from "Messaging" and Activesync since you said you stopped using that account?

Hello. Well the first thing you need to do is backup your PIM data either to the internet or storage card. You can do this by the MyPhone service or the free program PIMBackup, which you will install on the phone.

    MyPhone
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/default.mspx

    PIMBackup
    http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pim-backup-v2-8.html

    PIMBackup User guide
    http://www.dotfred.net/PIM/Pim%20Backup%20quick%20user%20guide.pdf

You will most likely need to delete the partnership from WMDC and the phone and remake the partnership. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that you may lose some or all PIM info from the phone so a backup is very important.

Thank you for that information.  I was able to backup my contacts, somewhat.  The problem I now have is that I am able to connect to my computer by both bluetooth and usb, but it only gives me the option to sync media files, open documents on the device, etc... it doesn't give me the option to sync my contacts on Outlook.  I have Vista with Outlook 2007.

I am not sure what I am missing here.

    Thanks,

    Noel

Hello. When you don't have access to any sync options for contacts/calendar/etc. (e.g. the Outlook stuff), WMDC is not able to access Outlook. From your first post, you mentioned that this is a new PC with a new Outlook installation. I just want to make sure that you have setup Outlook with a profile (you generated a .pst file) to sync with. If you have done this, make sure that you have a few entries in each of the options that you want to sync. Syncing to an empty Outlook profile can delete that info from the phone. Also, make sure you have the conflict setting correct, replace on PC or replace on phone.

If you did all of the above and the sync options still are greyed out, try repairing Outlook 2007 with the "diagnostic" feature under "help". Also, it was not clear if you had a sync partnership on the phone prior to your mishap. If you did, I would delete that off the phone, soft reset the phone, delete the partnership from WMDC, reboot the computer, and plug in the phone to establish a new partnership.

I apologize for not being clear, while I am waiting for new computer, the computer I am trying to sync with is NOT brand new but is running on Vista Ultimate 32bit with Outlook 2007 installed.  I have deleted all partnerships off of the phone which now leaves me with a message on my phone, in Active Sync "To synchronize you device with a desktop computer, install the synchronization software from the Getting Started Disc included with your device on your PC."  The disk I have is for Active Sync 4.5 which is not compatible. Since my computer already has Windows Mobile Center on it I shouldn't need to install anything, correct?

It will recognize the phone but it does not give me the option to sync outlook, it pops a screen up that says:

    Auto Play

    Noel's Smartphone Imate

    Device Options

    • Sync digital media files to this device

    • Open device to view files

    • Import Pictures

    • Import pictures and video

It shows up in my sync center but when I try to set up device it only goes to my media files and gives me no options to set up outlook contacts or email sync.

I don't know what I am missing here.
