I keep on getting "error 80072ee7" everytime I try to update using Windows Update on my Samsung Omnia.  I thought it was because of my signal but i went out into clear sky and it still wouldn't update. Any help?

I am having the same problem using Verizon and wifi.  I think that Verizon has blocked it.  This is a serious affront to right to keep my phone secure.

Even though Windows Update is on your device, it has not been implemented by providers like Verizon.  The error usually occurs when you are not connected to the internet but I am assuming it is because you cannot use it yet.

I assume you can connect to the net and use your device for everything else...correct?

I and a number of other Verizon wireless users in multiple states started having the same issue early last week, when  it had worked perfectly for mths before. I discovered this when posting in the Verizon forums last week. The response I recieved from them today is below. Thanks.

"Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. My name is Timothy, and I am happy to assist you regarding your inquiry about your Samsung Omnia.  I regret to learn that this has occurred.  I imagine that it's been frustrating for you.

Mr. Liverman, the issue you're having is due to your inability to connect to Microsoft's update server.  We provide you data access and that allows you the ability to get your emails and get online.  When you select the Windows Update function, you're linked to a connection to Microsoft. If they're updating their server or the server is down, you won't be able to connect.  Please see the link below for support from Microsoft. "

Yea I believe there is some kind of problem with Microsoft's Servers but not sure if it is.  And the link doesn't help me at all since it does not include anything about the Windows Update.

It has been a long time since I had my test device but it was a quick operation and easy to do.

I just tried it on my device and although I do not get the error you get, mine just times out.  I expected that since it is (to the best of my knowledge) not operational.  The providers are going to have to buy into it and my belief is that they are very reluctant to do so.  Please note that my statements are just MY belief and not based upon absolute fact.

I dont understand what you mean it is not enabled right now? why not? Why is it so hard to get an answer to this? It seems like there would be some kind of solution or reason. On my Omnia it shows Support then it gives no information of where to get it.

I agree...it clearly "was" enabled and functioning on my phone and numerous other Verizon Omnia users based on the posts here and in Verizon forums until approx 2 weeks ago and then suddenly stopped working.

From what I can see, it is not enabled because the cell providers are choosing not to use it.  I have tried it on a test device from Microsoft and it works well but the device vendors and the cell providers have to agree to it.  That has not occured at this time AFAIK.

I have a Samsung Blackjack2 and I was able to run mobile update from Activesync with my pc internet connection and www.ixquick.com a couple of months back.

But the other night I cannot run those 2 but other sites display on the phone browser. I dont want to incur data charges via the ATT network so that's why I do it from my home PC . So I'm wondering if its the windows mobile update server problem [since my pc updates OK from regular Win Update] or something else?

The perplexing thing is I get www.ixquick.com loaded [so it says] but it is a blank page with a zoom box when it worked fine awhile ago. Any insight w/b appreciated.

And while I am posting anyone know of a tutorial on how to install 3rd party programs such as .cab files .jad java files and .vb [scripts I guess] Thanks

Why I cannot connect to the Update Server (of Microsoft ?). I regularly use IE browser and navigate on Internet with my HP Data Messeger.

I have 2 sprint treo pros...one I always active sync, the other I have never. Starting 2 weeks ago, I can no longer get the update. From all of my research, this is Microsoft's problem, and has nothing to do with the providers. For some reason, they have a bug in their programs, and have not fixed it....perhaps this is from the alleged N.K. Cyber attacks, and the like?

I, too, am having the same problem trying to update windows mobile on my HTC smartphone. I was able to do this before just by enabling wifi, now I cannot. My wireless provider is ATT, but the wifi I use for accessing the internet is Verizon. Will there be a fix to this problem soon? I don't buy into your excuse that the providers aren't letting us update. This is a Microsoft issue!!

The next snip is from ECNmag.com and I think is relevant to the fact that alot of us think this is a Microsoft problem.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"AT&T Opens Can of Worms with Blocking of 4Chan

    Ecnmag.com - July 28, 2009

Editor's Note: We need to have an open political forum to dicsuss all of these issues. Who owns the access? Who is allowed to show the content? We need to be aware of these issues now, or our options will be gone before we even have a chance to consider them.

(newsfactor.com) - AT&T revived the issue of network neutrality over the weekend by blocking the 4Chan message board. On Sunday, 4Chan founder Christopher Poole posted a notice that AT&T was "filtering/blocking img.4chan.org" for AT&T customers.

AT&T confirmed the blocking, but said it was because of a denial-of-service attack on 4Chan that began on Friday. It said access was blocked temporarily to prevent the attack from impacting its other customers, and "was in no way related to the content at img.4chan.org."

    Poor Response, Not Censorship

It added, "Overnight Sunday, after we determined the denial-of-service threat no longer existed, AT&T removed the block on the IP addresses in question. We will continue to monitor for denial-of-service activity and any malicious traffic to protect our customers." DDoS attacks brought down the 4Chan site twice in June.

Poole appeared to confirm AT&T's statement in a blog posting. "This wasn't a sinister act of censorship, but rather a bit of a mistake and a poorly executed, disproportionate response on AT&T's part," he wrote. "Whoever pulled the trigger on blackholing the site probably didn't anticipate (nor intend) the consequences of doing so."

While the block was in effect, some 4Chan members moved to retaliate, reportedly posting the phone number and e-mail address of AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. A report that Stephenson had died appeared on CNN's user-generated iReport Web site but was quickly removed.

Reactions across the Web indicated a fear of 4Chan's users. "AT&T has just opened perhaps the most vindictive, messy can of worms it could have possibly found," said TechCrunch. "Blocking any site is an extreme breach of user trust, but the decision to block 4chan in particular just seems stupid. Expect the Web equivalent of rioting if this doesn't change soon."

Amid the fuss, the DDoS attack on 4Chan continued, slowing the site and bouncing back millions of messages to AT&T's servers.

    FCC Likely To Weigh In

Whatever the case, AT&T's blocking presents an appearance of censorship and likely will catch the eye of new FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who favors network neutrality. The Federal Trade Commission is also rumored ready to enforce neutrality rules for Internet service providers.

AT&T reportedly submitted comments to the FCC arguing against network neutrality. The company wants the FCC to rule on individual cases instead of adopting a broad rule."

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I draw the parallel because a provider blocking or disabling this WIN Update functionality on their network may seemingly be censorship at least. But in the real world if they are blocking WIN Mobile Update is incredibly bad business as they are supposed to "provide service". This ATT snip above is akin to the Coke Classic debacle from years ago in that it is a huge mistake if it is true "censorship".

Frankly I don't think it is. I think some ATT guy was trying to help his customers, not censor them. As also I don't think the network providers are blocking WIN Mobile Update!

At this point in our shared WIN Mobile Update problem I blame Microsoft. What else is new? THANKS IMtechSavvy

I appreciate you comment but as I have indicated before, it works well in my testing.  However, it has to be implemented by the vendors and carriers since THEY DO ADJUST THE ROMs to fit the specs of their devices.  They have not done so at this point in time.

if every diffrent vendors face this problem, every diffrent carriers in world reported same problem..only thing common is windows used int..

and it doenst require sixth sense to identify where the problem ..just common sense will work

my decision was wrong for selecting a windows mobile than going for any other operating system..

@ jack (moderator) i feel sad about you..for a free testing windows mobile how long you can keep ignoring the problems ?

That does not make sense to me manjesh.  My comment talked about that I was able to test the service during development.  It worked well and has great promise.  I was pleased to see it included on devices but for it to work, the vendors and/or service provders have to buy into the process.  Is that too difficult to understand?

and it doenst require sixth sense to identify where the problem ..just common sense will work

You absolutely have that correct, no 6th sense needed and common sense will work.  The service works.  I've tried it, it was successful and has great promise.  Now that it works, those vendors/providers need to implement it.  What part of that do you need help with?

    my fellow forum users,

we are going to have to try to find support somewhere else. these user forum moderators clearly don't know what they are talking about. Obviously the update service was working, otherwise we wouldn't now be complaining that it has quit working. I have had issues with other windows mobile features and posted in another topic area. the user forum "moderators" are unable to help me with those issues as well. I am tired of excuses "It works well on my end." I think the moderators are implying that we users just aren't as smart as they are and we don't know what we're talking about. Our issues must be in our imaginations if the moderators can get "our" problems to actually work on their phones.

I seriously now wish I'd bought an iphone. Oh well...

What the heck is a vendor rom update anyway?

Each device maker gets the core Windows Mobile OS from Microsoft then they make adjustments to it to fit the specs of their device.  Then a cell provider gets the device from the vendor and they then have specific requirements that they want added to the device.  The result is a ROM that has been adjusted by both the device maker and cell provider.  ROM updates usually come from the vendor site although often times you see them from the cell providers site.

     Proposed Answer
the windows update doesnt work because each carrier/phone has a unique custom built OS based on a core OS. the iphone and pre can do these push updates because there is only one phone with one OS on one carrier. there are hundreds of unique OS's on hundreds of carriers and it is impossible for microsoft to push updates like apple/palm can. also, were windows update to work, you wouldnt get anything since there is nothing to update.

That's MS mags2009 to you, cplush! Looks like there are several clueless people here in addition to me since we are all having the same issues. Our problem has not been resolved satisfactorily or we wouldn't still be complaining. We are uspset because the updates were working just fine until a few weeks ago, then they suddenly stopped working for no good reason. I understand that some phones have different operating systems.

    My case is the bellow.

My X01T (Toshiba G900) tries to solve update.windowsmobileupdate.com. The name query is failed. It finally causes the error 80072ee7.

dig shows that ns1.msft.net has SOA for windowsmobileupdate.com. But, it does not have (or does not reply) A record for update.windowsmobileupdate.com.

I have no idea why ns1.msft.net does not have (or does not reply) the record.

    Hi,

I have a HTC Touch Cuiser 2 with winmobile 6.1
I have resetted the ROM several times and after this I was still able to connect to windows update
So at some night in april this year I decided to do an update and it was still working (althought there was and never has been an update available)
The following morning after a good night sleep, the phone wasn't updating anymore

If your explanation is true, wouldn't it already result in an error when I bought the phone,
or at least after restting my phone with the ROM

I've resetted my phone to its original

    installation probably like 50 times,
then how comes this happens overnight - with no change in the phone or connecting environment at all

    PLEASE EXPLAIN

I don't believe for a minute it is not due to MS
If MS update procedure is really depending on the manufacturer and cellnetwork providers
Then there is something seriously wrong don't you think??

So I too, like many others have a leastSmart phone. Make/Model/Carrier - who cares? Update worked for 2 months at the beginning of the the year and then the connection issue arose. Nice investigating regarding the name query, SmirRa!!!

But all in all I think we all need to take a step back and waft through the thick endless smokescreen. What updates are you expecting?  Let alone provision of any new capability. My phone's features do not all work as advertised. What is worse however is the the person whom I paid for the hardware & software  and monthly service doesn't support those features. the problem with my then contacting the phone manufacturer or microsoft is that I don't pay them (directly) and am not a direct customer.

These companies don't really care directly about the features in so much as there is sufficiient bait to get you to buy a phone and monthly service. Once you are in, well your are in. 2years...might as well be life.

So where is the effort going? Clearly marketing. Making it all look flash...

Microsoft learned a valuable lesson from selling to a world of customers in XP. YOu just can't kill that thing when everybody is using it. And if you can't kill it, well then it is killing your profitability.

With Vista we saw Microsoft strategically market compatibility and qualification as smoke screens to push further distance and maneuver vendors into the direct firing line.

The value from a good game of Piggy In The Middle; whenno single company is incentivised to fix the overall package it is clearly obvious that it is more profitable to point the finger at a partner company and ultimately infuriate the ____ out of you enough so that you might be stupid enough to buy/upgrade your device and service package to a supposedly all new and improved and more capable phone and even from them again.

    Where's the money in updates?

    Wot no update ._.
This is a just a fall out effect caused by the operations of capitalism as governed by our current and immutable laws of economics.
