QuestionWM Facebook - Read comments of other users on status updates

  • Tuesday, June 23, 2009 9:16 AMbbougie Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

    Hello,

I apologise up front, should my question not be in the appropriate forum, or was answered already (I did search, but did not succeed in finding the answer)

I do like the Microsoft Facebook application a lot. There is, however, one thing I can´t figure out: it seems I cannot see any comments made on my friends' statuses.

Is this feature not in WM Facebook or is it that I just can find it?

    thanks for your help,
    Bruno

Not sure Bruno.  I just checked it on my Touch Pro and it shows updates.  Have you hit the "update status" located under menu?

    Hi Jack,

    thanks for your reply.

I do see status updates..but when someone comments on a status (which you would normally see on facebook online), it
seems not show in WM Facebook.

    thanks again,
    bruno

    Jack,

I am not sure if I really understand what you are saying. You write about "status updates" and my question is about the "comments" on
the status lines.  Maybe I dont understand is .. or is it a miscommunication?

Attached a picture that might explain it a bit better.

The lower picture is a screen dump  of facebook in the browser. As you can see someone commented  on the status. The picture on top is
what WM Facebook shows.  As you can see, no indication someone commented ("don't do it...  " etc) on the status line

When I use WM Internet Explorer to check facebook on m.facebook.com, it does tell a comment was made on the status line (and by clicking on it, i could view it).
    See image below:

    thanks again for your time

Bruno ... thanks for putting up the screen shot.  It made the question totally clear.

Mine is doing the same thing.  I have it installed but don't really use it (I prefer Twitter and use PockeTwit) so that was something I did not notice.  I'll look into it more.

Just as an FYI, I sent a note to a friend at Microsoft in hopes that she might be able to ask the Facebook application folks if it is a "missing feature"?  If I get a reply, I will post it Bruno.  Thanks again for that screenshot ....

You're right that at Facebook mobile home you have to click to see the Comments on Status Updates. I was able to view Comments from Facebook mobile on my Samsung BlackJack II device at the Wall view without an additional click when looking at my friend's wall.  It seems like this is a design decision and I'll check tomorrow whether there are any plans for changes. It reminds me a bit of the personal preference settings we have here on the forums for whether to view posts in threaded mode or not. I'll let you know tomorrow if there is anything further to report. Otherwise, apologies for the extra clicks to view your friends Wall then comments on status updates.

    Hi Mary-Alice,

thanks for your help. I checked what you wrote and I managed to see "a" comment... However, it seemed not all comments did show. Below a few screendumps to illustrate

The Facebook app shows one comment on the status line (this happens to be my own comment)

m.facebook.com shows there are actually 11 comments. The picture below shows the last few comments of the thread

(not the last comment is the one shown by the Facebook app)

It might be I am doing something wrong..but it seems the Facebook application does not show all comments.

Slightly off topic: it also seems the facebook app does not show "notifications" (as on www.facebook.com and m.facebook.com). The notifications are extremely convenient and most people I know would go straigh to the notifications after logging into facebook.com

    Thanks again for your help

    Hi Mary Alice,

I am having the same issue. I love the interface, but the status updates "comments" are what I look at every time I log in. And the notifications should also be immediately visible so that i know who commented on my status or photos.

    Thanks for looking into this!

    Hi All,

I too noticed the same issue. The facebook mobile app does not show the user comments on the status updates and does not indicate if there are any 'likes' on the status updates. This is the most prominent feature that I use in facebook.  Because of this, I am using the m.facebook.com, eventhough i like the mobile version.
Just curious to know what happened further to the meeting with facebook team.

that article was very interesting. no wonder we can't get any help for windows mobile. there's none to be had. that's too bad about MS not being willing to jump into the mobile market. I guess the big question is who is the bigger loser...the consumer who buys the windows mobile product or Microsoft for not getting into the game?

See my post in the threads above. If your phone is internet ready, you do not need the Microsoft FB app. Just go to m.facebook.com. It works very well. Has pretty much all the features as the full website, except the silly game apps, etc. I use the FB mobile website all the time.

bbougie--i have similar phone HTC S621. I agree with you about WM6. It does become very slow. I have to shut the phone off every once in a while, then it works fairly quick again.

Still am wondering if I should've held out for the newest iPhone....

i am glad to see that there are many people who wish to see this issue resolved. Glad im not the only one with this opinion. the new interface is fantastic. im using the HTC touch pro and i love it1 but i agree that my most "used" features were the "like" button, and to see my amigos comments. i do hope it can be resolved soon, but i am patient...

I do have a problem with a few undesired programs. i have tried to delete/remove a few installed programs i no longer wanted, but they dont seem to fully remove. i still see their icons or other random fragments of the app and/or program. any suggestions?

mags2009: I do use m.facebook.com all the time, and over my 3.5G connection, it works well. But I'd still prefer to use a dedicated app if it worked as well as the one for the iPhone. For now, the mobile site will have to do.

I'll think I'll be old or dead before they figure out the FB app for WM. Perhaps they should consult with the Apple geniuses. For now, it is going to be a mighty long wait for a fix. I too would prefer a dedicated app that actually works like it should, the likelihood of that actually happening seems to be near zero.

@MaryAlice, I think what most of us struggle with to understand is that something that seems a rather simple problem to us seems to take long to solve..or at least a long time before a solution is released. In my simple mind I think

    1) the MSFB app communicates with the facebook server (or api)
    2) the facebook server either supplies the comments of other or it does not
    3) if it doesnt... well, the issue is not in the MSFB app.. too bad so sad.. if it does supply the comments..see 4
    4) the comments are received by the MSFB app... it doesnt show them..adjust the code so it does show it.

    so we start wondering
    1) is it hard to find the cause of the bug (if it is a bug in tha app)?
    2) does this issue have less priority?
    3) is it actually solved..and will it be part of a new release..but there are other reasons not to release an update yet?

don't get me wrong, I do appreciate you keep updating us on the status :)

    cheers,
    Bruno

i do hope it can be resolved soon, but i am patient...

As well as a lot of others as well phase202.  Clearly the use of Facebook is important to many folks and one can only hope that the issues are being worked on.  I expect that it will be resolved but "when" is something we just do not have any knowledge of and speculation of when will certainly do nothing to get the issue resolved. Like you, I am just being patient and hope that it is not too long before we see it changed.

It just seems to me that the application may be taking a "second seat" because there are other issues that are taking precedence (like the upcoming release of WM 6.5).  Will it be fixed and improved?  I would expect it will be but we will just have to wait.  What I can say is that any information becomes available as to status, we will post something as soon as we become aware of it.

I do have a problem with a few undesired programs. i have tried to delete/remove a few installed programs i no longer wanted, but they dont seem to fully remove. i still see their icons or other random fragments of the app and/or program. any suggestions?
So this part of your comment is the real reason why I replied.  Sometimes that does occur with programs because of the way it was written/installed.  Most often, it is the errant icon we see remaining but the program itself is gone.

The simplest "fix" for the icon is to navigate to the Windows/Start Menu/Programs Folder using File Explorer.  Find the icon and delete it.  For the most part, that will do the trick.  Occasionally there may be a 3rd party program that will not totally remove itself leaving some folders in the Folder called Programs Files.  Just navigate to the Program Files folder and look for a folder with the name of the program (or company) and delete it.

Is there anything left on the device after you do that?  Possibly some info in the registry but that really has no effect on the device.

As an aside, because I install/delete so many programs during the course of the year, I generally decide to Hard Reset my device once or twice a year to just dump all the "junk" and get a fresh start.  It may take a bit to get it all back the way you want but for me, I like doing it and getting back just what I want (and use).  It is just a personal preference.

    Bruno,
That was a really nice post and although it was directed at MaryAlice, I wanted to comment because I think it is too important.

    so we start wondering
    1) is it hard to find the cause of the bug (if it is a bug in tha app)?
I guess the answer to that really has to be addressed by a programer.  On the surface, one would think that it would be easy but then it reminds of of the length of time it took to solve an issue with MSReader.  I know they spent months working on an activation issue  (as well as a few other issues) and finally the latest release just arrived

    2) does this issue have less priority?

IMHO, that may well be a "key" point.  With the upcoming release of WM 6.5 and all the final pieces that have to be completed before final release, that comment may have more truth than we think.  I can't imagine that someone has a "full time" job developing a free Facebook application.

    3) is it actually solved..and will it be part of a new release..but there are other reasons not to release an update yet?
One never knows, that could be part of it.  I do know that the MSReader program was just about ready for release but there were a few issues that needed to be dealt with that delayed the release (for a long time BTW).

The truth of the matter is that we know they are aware of the facebook issues and we were told that they are working on it.  But that is all we know and any other comment is just pure speculation.  When we know anything that is substantive and it is important to post, it will appear in this thread as soon as we become aware of it.

    Hi Jack,

thanks for your long reply. Just something that is not clear to me: what is your and MaryAlice's connection to the MS WM Team.. From MaryAlice's post
I got the impression she actually meets members of the WM Team. You write all we know is they are aware of it.. so I am just wondering about that now.

There is one other thing in your post I would like to share my point of view on: you write : "I can't imagine that someone has a "full time" job developing a free Facebook application" ..allthough the application is free downloadable..it actually is not free in my opinion..the availability of these kind of applications make people decide to buy a smartphone or another kind of phone. I guess the majority of us couldn't care less about the OS on a cell phone..it's the applications that run on it. When MS offers brilliant "free" applications.. they can charge more for the OS (I assume part of the price I pay for a mobile with WM flows through to MS)..and people are willing to pay that because of the "free" applications...

    cheers,
    Bruno

    Hi Bruno

I am a user just like you and am very active in these forums because I am a MVP of Mobile Devices and throughly enjoy helping others.  These forums, although hosted by Microsoft, are moderated by volunteers.  The cost of maintaining a forum this size would be too prohibitive for any one individual to incur.  Our goal is to help the user who might well be having an issue so they might have a better experience with their device.

Mary Alice works for Microsoft in the Total Access area and spends a great deal of time helping out in the forums with questions and attempts to get access to answers for issues that we just cannot resolve.  She has been a solid mainstay for us in the forums and we are greatly appreciative of her genuine concern and hard work in helping out.  She does have the ability to contact the members of the Windows Mobile Team to make them aware of issues that have become problems.

I think one of the issues that never ceases to amaze me is say you and I both have the same device and same PC.  I have an issue and you have none .... so why does that occur?  I just do not know.  It could be user error, a program that has made some registry change, a "fluke" or possibly a "bug".  Sometimes we figure it out with all the great thoughts for the users here (and sometimes we don't) but I think for the majority of issues, we are able to get to some sort of resolution.  I truly believe that the success of these forums will be based upon "users helping users".

I hope that gives you some sense of an answer to your question....

I do not disagree with your comment at all.  Truth be told, I made that comment because when I read your post all of a sudden the old "Power Toys" we used to be able to get for free came to mind.  Ther were applications that folks at Microsoft made in their "spare time" and because they were so cool and worked (for the most part) they shared them with everyone but also were quick to point out there was no support and that they were just "toys" to try and use.

I do not know just how the Facebook application came about.  I do not know if an outside source made it or if it came from an internal group.  For the most part it works but clearly there are issues that have arisen.  From the information we have received, they are aware of the issues and it is being worked on.  I take that at face value and expect that there will be changes made and when it is ready, we will get it.  i also believe there are priorities and where the application is on that list is anyones guess .....

    Hey everyone,

I think the bottom line is that WM users like me are thinking of switching to the iPhone just because I feel that I'm not getting my money's worth with WM anymore. Why should we stay with apps that don't work on WM when iPhone users are just raving about their FREE Facebook app, and many other things WM can't do, or doesn't do as well as the iPhone.

It may seem like a non-issue, but sometimes even the smallest problems can just make someone say "the heck with it" and switch to another operating system which works.

Like I said before, if a long-time WM user like me is contemplating switching to the iPhone or Blackberry, what about others who are just starting to compare devices and operating systems? This goes beyond providing free applications, but ties in to consumer perception of Microsoft products as a whole!

    Ikram,
allthough a bit off topic.. I think you made a very good point about consumer perception of MS. It's like with the Office 2007 release..the UI is so different from what people used for years people actually switched back to Office 2003. I think MS can be happy a lot of consumers just know MS and are scared to move
to alternatives... however, this doesnt seem to hold for mobile phones.

Personally I made the choice for WM because I needed to be able to sync with MS Windows..so at the the time WM seemed the logical decision... as my phone
is only a year old I dont want to buy a new one yet... but when I am ready to get me a new one..I certainly will consider other OS as well!

I lost my Omnia two days ago. Guess what I'm buying next? Yup, an iPhone 3GS. I guess fate has decided for me. Buh bye WM (at least for now).

My Privacy Settings only let friends search me, so that strangers like you can't find me. Haha! You can never be too careful these days.

It didn't used to be like that, and I just noticed this tonight. When I go to the website, it appears ok, but as DamienMS says... when viewing it on the Facebook Mobile app, it looks like a:0:{}.
