AnswerSamsung SGH-i907 Epix/WM 6.1/ WIFI problem

I just bought the new Samsung Epix - One of the best smartphones I've ever played with! But I am having a problem with WIFI.  I am new to WM6 and/or 6.1 so I may be missing something.  I do have an unlimited data plan so I guess I could use AT&T media net for everything - but I'd rather be able to use WIFI if I wanted to.  My home wireless network is WEP protected.  I set up the phone with everything that I know to be correct, but I am not able to connect to the internet.  I get the error message "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."  I have not tried to connect to any other WIFI access points so I don't know if this is an isolated problem with the network or a setting in the phone.  Any ideas?

OK, let me one up it... Opera Mobile works great, but if you want to use IE- I have the fix.

    On your phone...

Start > Settings > Connections Tab > Proxy Manager > Check the Box > OK with your mouse > Close down everything.

Now set up your wi-fi and IE should work great. (although I like the Opera Wink

Ha ha ... "Consistency" that is a funny word ...but so far so good! Once I figured out how to get it working.

    1. Kill IE using task manager (first time only)
    2. Turn on Wi-Fi Card and Connection established
    3. Set Proxy and re-open IE.

I tested changing between the provider network and wi-fi, starting with wi-fi first and it worked seamlessly. Apparently when I was playing with the configurations yesterday I broke something. As witnessed by the fact that I had to restore back to factory default because some how the WAP Network profile you aren't supposed to be able to change, I changed. Sorry I don't know how, but I changed it and couldn't figure out how to get it back...so I just did a restore...no big deal I had just bought the phone.

I tested it with the most important apps..EMAIL, SEARCH and it worked beautifully!

Here's what I think caused my initial dificulty.  When I set up the conntection for my wireless network, I changed the connection from Internet to one of the connections I had created, bad move.  If you leave the connections as-is and use Internet, then the wi-fi replaces the connectivity for all apps requesting to use the Internet connection profile.

P.S.  I don't think you need to kill IE, but I can't test yet until I have to restore to default again .

You should not face any such problems in connecting your device to wifi connection. Is your device actually able to find the network? If router is protected by MAC-address security, then you must tell the network admin to put your device's MAC address to the list of allowed devices

    Hoganiri,

May I suggest that firstly, you should try to connect to the internet using AT&T media net and open some web pages. If you could do that, then you can be sure that you've done whatever necessary for a data connection.

Secondly, you should then locate an unsecured wifi location ( Starbucks, college, etc..), try to connect and then open some web pages. If you could do that, then you can be sure that you've done whatever necessary for a basic wifi connection.

Once the above two issues have been resolved, it becomes so much easier to get on with detailed troubleshooting.

    Just a suggestion...

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have used my media net connection quite a bit since I got the phone last Thursday. Is working great through that connection.  When I set up my wireless network I did not specify any specific rights to any PC via MAC addresses.  I have 2 laptops and 1 PC on the network that connect via the 128bit WEP network key.  I have had guests in my house receive the key and connected without any problem.

I've confirmed that the key I used is correct. While WIFI is enabled it shows that it is connected and shows a strong signal to my router, it just won't connect to the internet. I have not tried a public WIFI access point yet. I'm baffled what the problem could be.  Not sure what to look for next. I'm hoping that ATT/Samsung may have some ideas

Any further suggestions would be great! Thanks again.

Hi- I had the exact same problem as you.Got the phone today, 3G worked great and went home and hit a wall with the wi-fi.

I went ahead and installed Opera Mobile 9.5, and the wireless works flawless with it. There seems to be some problem (still) with IE and the wi-fi on this phone!

    Hope that helps!

    Hoganiri,

Hope that you can try out on a public WIFI access point as soon as possible.  One of the things that we want most is to connect to a public hotspot, because if I am in the house, I would rather surf the net using my laptop which has a much better screen and more powerful tools...

The observation by Zero Wolf is also correct, because IE is usually programmed to use phone data connectivity, and not wifi connection. To use IE, I usually connect to wifi first, and then launch IE...

    Regards...

I had the same problem.  I am not sure if this fixed it but it does work now.  First I turned on the wi-fi connection, then turned off the phone connection to make sure I would not connect through media net.  I then went to my yahoo email account through the messaging of the phone, in menu I clicked send/recieve.  This showed me that the wi-fi did work with my phone and home network.  I still had problems connecting directly to the internet using explorer until I connected through a link in one of my email messages.  That seemed to unlock something.  When the link worked, I then tried closing my email account and go directly through explorer and its working fine now.  Hope that helps.

Thanks for the idea.  I did try it with one of my email accounts.  It connected without any problems, but I still cannot access the internet so obviously IE is the problem.  This at least gets me headed in the right direction.

    Zero Wolf,

Thanks for the answers - YOU ARE RIGHT - SHOULD HAVE LOOKED CLOSER! I actually changed it back and forth yesterday following some other instructions from support - guess I didn't look deep enough today.

However, the more valuable advise is dumping IE altogether and going to Opera 9.5.  It does everything that I want it to do.

I can stand in front of 100+ people a day and be absolutely in control - but a little 400.00 machine can control me - WHAT A CRAZY DEAL!

    Thanks again!

I had to make a last comment hoganirl.

When this thread just began, I could not understand why you were not able to connect via WiFi.  All of the suggested solutions should have been the correct answer and I was convinced that you were just missing one of the points.

Well, I was wrong because I have had an Epix for several days to review and I spent SIX hours trying to get the WiFi to connect to the net.  NO LUCK and I am convinced I have all the setting correct.  I did find an interesting thread over at the AT&T forums with a suggested solution that seemed to work for some (but not on my device).

I believe it is some tweak they did that is giving connection through PIE a problem.  I did try Opera and was able to connect briefly but the issue came back.  All in all, not a satisfying experience.

I just replaced a Blackjack II with an Epix (Blackjack III) today, and while I *hope* the wretched POP/IMAP no-send problem is resolved with this iteration, I was stopped cold just like hoganirl, with the exact same symptoms.  'Followed your directions and BAM, I'm in like Flint!  Whose brilliant idea was it to set this Proxy setting, anyway?....

This worked really WELL!  I did have to close IE with the Task Manager, but I now can use my wi-fi connection to access the internet.  Does anyone know how to get the rest of the applications to use the wi-fi connection instead of the data network.  I too have Unlimited Data, but traffic is faster on my home network and I'd hate for the provider to cut me off because they feel I am abusing the network.

    HI,
I have the same problem. Here is what is happening in my case:

    1. I removed all my ISP connection settings so that I can not connet through Data plan of AT&T.
    2. My default connection type I set to My Work connection (but no setting).
    3. When into proxy manager and enable button ( don't use proxy).
    4. I have secured WEP network connection (D-link router 54 mbps)
    4. This made IE to work and again disconnected after 1 or 2 minutes.
    5. I Installed Opera 9.5 beta version.
    6. reboted the system and router.
    7. Able to connect 2 to 3 minutes and again disconnected saying not able to connect to network.

Really it's giving me hard time connecting to internet
    Any ideas are greatly appriciated.
    Raj.

Well documentation is not very abundant on this problem

I did what I never do, I called support AT&T
and they could not fix it so eventually was transferred to Samsung Support.

I went from level one to level two and finally level three support
and they were able to get me connected to wifi

I had to put all sorts of codes to get different information
    - specifically something called the streaming manager and then
I had to change a setting to "internet" in that manager
(the setting only accessible via the code) and finally the wifi
    worked

I can connected to my wpa network and any network I go to which
is open or if i get the key
the only problem is that battery dies quickly
and when power saver mode kicks in almost always disconnects me
from the network but not always

    I hope this helps

    Charlie

I am have problems also. My Linksys wireless router is configured using a MAC address filter. It will only allow devices that have the physical MAC address listed in the router to connect. It does not use a network key or password, The Epic MAC address is entered correctly in the router. When I try to connect via Epix wi-fi I see the network and attempt to connect, but cannot. Various laptops that I have connected in this way work just fine. I have talked to both AT&T and Samsung about this and they don't seem to know what the problem is.

Is it perhaps in the Wi-Fi configuration settings on the Epix? Neither AT&T or Samsung could tell me what should be selected/entered on the three pages of configuration settings.

Also, I attempted to connect at my local Panera's and was not successful. I connected to the network, but could not go to the Internet using IE. I have downloaded Opera and will be trying that soon.

I have the Proxy Manager box selected (Do not use a proxy server).

    Any help appreciated.

I just attempted to register online my Epix to access the wireless network of the university at which I work. They require you to enter the MAC address of the device. I entered it correctly and got a message that I could not use that MAC address. Since my home router is also set to also use the MAC address, I wonder if there is something unusual or hinkey about the MAC address on this device.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I recommend a hard reset if the phone is relative new and your not afraid of losing too much data.

I have an answer which I believe is the definitive one for the original question, that is the "page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost" error in Internet Explorer when you try to navigate to a web page after successfully connecting to a WiFi router.  Alfarocm alluded to the fix for the more "stubborn" form of the problem, but did not give sufficient details. I, too, called Samsung customer service, and got it fixed at only level TWO support ( I guess they're getting smarter :-), after about 45 minutes on the phone.  In hopes of saving others a lot of headaches, here is a hopefully complete solution:

    1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Connections tab -> Proxy Manager
    2. Check the box for "Do not use a proxy server".
    3. Go back to the "Today" screen.

This "secret code" opens a super secret application called PPC_UAMgr, the UA/Streaming Manager.
    5. Go to Menu -> IE -> Connection .
    6. Under "Select Network" choose "The Internet".
    7. Click "Save".

As an aside, I will never buy another Windows Mobile device.  This is the third one I've owned, and they all have been amazingly glitchy right out of the box.  I haven't added any software to this one, and regularly the sound dies and the display of remaining battery power gets stuck. I'm afraid the latter problem will cause the phone to overcharge my LiIon battery and fry it, so I always reboot the device right before I plug it into the charger, which is a pain. My next device will be an iPhone.

Much respect for ur response m8 but I sold the bloody phone & setelled in with a NOKIA E63 great, simple & cheap phone with the things any one would want from a business man to a multimedier & about the iPhone it actually stinks to some sort of lvl of complication & limitations I really prefer the NOKIA

Moot point for me, since I am not about to buy a new phone any time soon.  My main reason for going with a Windows Mobile device again was that I use Excel Mobile a lot, which is probably an aberration.

Addendum to my previous post: If you forget the magic code for getting into the UA/Streaming manager, it can also be found as follows:

Start -> Programs -> Applications -> File Explorer -> My Device -> Windows -> UAMgr
