Mars Data Restored - Mars data now being sever thru WWT servers
Jonathan Fay - WorldWide Telescope ArchitectMicrosoft EmployeeWednesday, May 02, 2012 2:51 AMOriginal Post 5/1/2012
WWT | Mars data hosted by NASA will be unavailable for an indeterminate amount of time. A NASA representative has informed us that a power supply problem in the server center had taken the servers hosting the Mars data off-line and that budgetary constraints might keep them from being able to restore the service. Microsoft is in the process of discussing potential solutions with NASA and we will
**** Update 5/4/2012 1:00pm PST ****
NASA has informed us that the data center will be down for several days or more. We have created a plan to move the hosting of the Martian data to Microsoft servers after the restoration of power at NASA, but in the meanwhile we have restored some Mars service by redirecting requests to a cache of the data hosted in the WWT data center.
We will eventually have full restoration of service, but we are taking steps to minimize the disruption and you might be able to help us.
**** Update 5/4/2012 9:00pm PST ****
The power has been restored to the NASA servers hosting the WorldWide Telescope data. There may be further power interruption in the NASA servers, but we have configured WWT to act as a cacheing proxy for the NASA Mars data and any future issues on the NASA servers should not have as significant an effect.
An additional side effect is that COMCAST customer who were having trouble getting to NASA website should not be able to see Mars data.
