Windows Live Messenger Upgrade Problem

When I login to WLM I am prompted to upgrade WLM I do and it appears to upgrade, when I attempt to logon on I am prompted to upgrade again this happens over and over. If I remove Windows Live Essentials then reinstall it will work 1 time then same problem on 2nd login attempt. I followed all troubleshooting suggestions on http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/ including a clean install. All other live programs a closed during the attempt. I am using XP and IE 8 recently upgraded to IE 8 maybe related? This is driving me nuts!! Any suggestions, thanks much
