  Message pops up saying "An unauthorized change was made to windows".  The error code on it is 0xC004D401.  This started happening out of nowhere.  I have never changed my OS or system restored.  I purchased this laptop on clearance, and it was a floor model.  Windows Vista Home Premium came with it.  I know it was not pre-owned because I worked in the electronics dept of the store I purchased it from.  When I check whether the OS is genuine, it says that it's not.  Here is my diagnostic validation info:

  Thanks, but I can't install windows updates either, so uninstalling my AV would be futile.  I can't install updates, itunes won't install, AND I'm getting the "unauthorized change was made to windows".  I detailed all 3 problems in original thread message.

  The reason you can;t install Windows Updates is possibly because Windows is in a non-genuine state – not the other way around.

  If you won’t follow instructions, then I’m afraid there is nothing that I can do for you.

  Well, I tried it anyway, although I knew it would be futile, and it was.  Nothing different happened.  I have never been able to install updates, even before I had my AV (which is avast, btw).  I had a 30 mcafee trial when I bought this, so I didn't get avast until that expired.  Thanks for the idea, got any better ones?

  Your root problem is almost certainly that you never properly removed McAfee.

  First uninstall anything remaining of McAfee, then run the MCPR tool to remove what’s left.

  reboot (even if it doesn’t ask for it).

  If Avast is back in again already, uninstall that and use their removal tool - http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

  reboot

  now run another MGADiag report. and post the result – I’ll look at it in the morning.

  If the system then shows as genuine, you can install MSE temporarily until SP2 is installed

  http://windows.microsoft.com/mse

  then you should be able to install SP2.

  If not, then

  run the usual checking tools.

  type in the Search box
  CMD.EXE
  right-click on the only file that is found
  Select Run as Administrator
  - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
  At the Command prompt, type
  CHKDSK C: /R
  and hit the Enter key
  You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
  
  After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC
  
  SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
  Click on the Start button
  type in the Search box
  CMD.EXE
  right-click on the only file that is found
  Select Run as Administrator
  - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
  At the Command prompt, type
  
  SFC /SCANNOW
  
  and hit the Enter key
  Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

  Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  Did everything you said, and in the last step where I type sfc/scannow in the command prompt, it says "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service".

  I still can't update via Windows Updater.  I downloaded MSE and installed that no problem.  Then I downloaded SP2 and I'm having trouble installing it.  It comes up with Error: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002).  Starting to feel like I'm running in circles here.....

  • SP2 installation fails with ‘ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002)’
  • any other system problems you know of

  The notifications were random, and only at startup, where it wouldn't let me into the OS from the sign-in screen.  I'm not sure yet if that's resolved, I'll know after a few more times of shutting down and coming back to it.  Thank you for all your help!  Hopefully I can get these other issues resolved and be able to get these updates installed. It would also be really nice to be able to use itunes on this laptop instead of just my pc!
