Why WGA validation (KB892130) is required when downloading updates via browser(IE) while it's not required when downloading updates via Automatic Update?
Thanks

Because that’s the way the system works – if your system is not validated, the updates that you get through Windows updates are limited to those that are available to unvalidated machines. If your machine is set to validate properly, you will have access to more updates through WU.

When you mentioned Windows Update, did you mean the Windows Update website or the Automatic Update service (yellow update icon in the tray)?
updates listed in Automatic Updates are the same listed on Windows Update/Microsoft Update website, the only difference is downloading updates -using the browser- from Windows Update website require WGA validation while updates in Automatic Updates can be downloaded and installed without validation.
As in this KB892130 article the validation tool is an ActiveX that runs in the browser before downloading updates from the website. This ActiveX doesn't affect Automatic Update feature.
From the kb article:
On both the Microsoft Download Center and the Windows Update Web site, the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which is an ActiveX control, performs a validation check to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine. If your copy of Windows is genuine, you can continue to access the download.
Note The Windows Update Web site is available only to customers who are running a genuine copy of Windows.
Note The Automatic Updates feature is not affected by the WGA validation check. Therefore, you can use the Automatic Updates feature to make sure that you receive critical Windows updates.
As a conclusion, genuine Windows can receive updates from both Automatic Update feature and Windows Update web site, while non-genuine Windows can receive the same updates like genuine through Automatic Update feature only.
The same question: Why validation is not required in Automatic Updates? (i.e. genuine and non-genuine Windows can download the same updates through Automatic Updates).

Actually, they can’t. That article is not complete. There are a large number of updates which can only be got through the extended search of Windows updates, and which therefore require validation. The Express search in Windows Updates pulls down the same updates as would be got through AU (or at least, that’s the way it started out, but all things change!).

They can download the same high-priority updates through Automatic Updates since Automatic Update has no validation check. Other updates are optional and need to be downloaded from Windows Update website which require the validation check."Assem Kh" wrote in message news:ffc79ac4-33b9-445f-87cf-a2691d49f64d...The same question: Why validation is not required in Automatic Updates?
