Why cannot I create a view with a built in filter, yet the same filter can be applied as a "Custom Filter"?

I am attempting to create a view for our executives to focus on a certain subset of projects. I go to "Server Settings", "Manage Views" and select the fields I want displayed, then build a filter that permits the correct subset of data (based upon "Project Status"). When I switch to this view in "Project Center" the view fails, and I get a blank subset and a notification that "An Unknown Error has Occurred"... When I remove the filter information from the view and resave it, it works. When I create a "Custom Filter" with the same logic, it works fine.
How do I know if this is a configuration error—or an intrinsic bug in the application; if the latter, when can it be fixed?

Hi Charles,
It seems the issue is with custom fields and is addressed in march 2012 hotfix. Please check the below knowledge base articles.
