Did my activation work out okay?

    Question

  • I had to use the automated phone activation. I have a OEM machine from Compaq and installed WIN7 fresh. Way to much of extra ____ that came with the pc. I used the sticker on my pc. I tried to activate it online. But it told me to use the phone. Since the key has never been activated before until now. If I do another clean install down the line. Will I have to use the phone again to activate it? Or since the key has now been activated. And it knows my pc. Will it work by just putting in the key to activate online?

  • COA keys need to be activated on the phone, that key is now tied to your computer and can only be reactivated on that computer but you will have no problem reinstalling in the future.

The best way to avoid activation issues from here on with fresh installs is to use the native backup program to create a system image and save it on an external drive. To restore the image simply load the windows DVD, instead of choosing install choose repair then restore the image.

  • Hi FattysGoneWild,

You will most likely need to do a Phone Activation, yes.

But the phone Activation process should go fairly quicky.  Average is around 5 mins to complete a Phone Activation.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Thanks for the reply. I have no issue with it being tied to this pc. But will I have to call if I do a clean install? Or will it work online now? I did make a back up image after install. But was still curious about that question. Because if the external hd goes out. Then I will have to do another install. Or can I copy that image to a dvd even though it is on my external hd?
