Windows Vista is not Genuine after system recovery- Product key rubbed off

    Question

  • I did a system recovery on my computer about two weeks ago so that I could install the Vista service packs. Then, yesterday when updates became available for my laptop, I also got a message saying that my copy of Windows Vista is not valid. The product key on the bottom of the computer has rubbed off and I don't have the recovery cd's with me so I cannot input the COA key. I have already tried the other suggestion of renaming the tokens.dat file which ended with my computer telling me I needed to reinstall Vista. I was able to do a system restore to an earlier date to make it function once again. Is there any way I could get this to work again without the COA key? Such as, is there a way to purchase a new one (not at full price of Vista)? The OS came preinstalled on my gateway laptop. Thanks.

It seems that your OS is not able to see the SLIC table that should be in the BIOS, to confirm that the installation is correct - you need to enter the COA Key on the sticker attached
Look on the bottom of your computer for a COA sticker, it may be inside the battery compartment, install that key by navigating to system properties in the control panel (or pressing pause and win keys at the same time), scroll to the bottom of the page and click on change product key.

    Now, activate by phone

    Activate by phone

    1. Type "slui 4" in the start menu search box, hit enter

    2. Select country or region

    3. Dial the number, DO NOT select any menu options, just wait and a person will pick up.

    4. activate by phone.
