Windows XP Pro OEM will not pass windows genuine validation

    Question

  • I bought a new, sealed copy of Windows XP Pro OEM online.  It came complete with product key and COA.  The product key allowed it to install but once I tried to install updates it failed Genuine Validation and now I have a "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" notification icon in the system try that I can't get rid of.  Windows updates complains too.  I updated to SP3 by downloading the full .exe rather than going through windows update.

    The software, CD, COA and documents look 100% legit and legal.

    How can I fix this problem?
