Sync WM5 (contacts, tasks, calendar, e-mail) with Windows Live Mail - WITHOUT Outlook

    דיון כללי

  • Often I have read the answers from MVPs: No.

    No? Why?

    • http://www.obharath.net/blog/2007/06/25/why-i-hate-my-windows-mobile/ : I understand and I agree ...
    • http://www.redmondpie.com/microsoft-phone-data-manager: From MS India but only supports syncing contacts. Also always get errors 404 and 500 on MSN India when looking for further information about "Phone Data Manager"
    • http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/windowsmobilesuggestions/thread/0fd2a6f3-15b0-4ebd-8dd1-6b7f7994924a: ...

BTW: This forum does not give ma an appropriate category/forum so I just selected Live Mesh/Live Mesh Mobile.

  • You've got two forum choices:

Here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/phone or here: http://windowslivehelp.com/, though the latter forums don't have a mobile area.

However, I am quite sure that you will find that the answer remains no.

Thank you for your answer even this are no good news for me of course ;)

Edit_2010-10-25_05:03pm : Some time ago I read in a MS blog that mail.live.com will be improved and will also include the possibility to sync directly with a WM phone. They really improved the "WebMail client but the "sync directly with WM phone"-feature was forgotten obviously ...

Edit_2010-10-25_06:23pm : It is driving me crazy ... Now I discovered something called "Exchange ActiveSync": http://help.outlook.com/en-gb/140/bb896613.aspx

Quote: "If you have a Windows Mobile phone or a mobile phone that supports Exchange ActiveSync, you can use your mobile phone to access your mailbox. You can access your e-mail messages, appointments and meetings, contacts, tasks, and voice mail messages on your mobile phone. "

Exactly what I am looking for. My WM5 supports "Exchange ActiveSync" ...  BTW, "Exchange ActiveSync" has nothing to do with ActiveSync / WMDC ... So what, if I own a normal Live ID (username@hotmail.com) is it possible to use "Exchange ActiveSync"? Is Hotmail hosted on a "Exchange environment"? I just entered m.outlook.com (Info from the help.outlook.com topic) for fun and got: This account does not have an Outlook Web App mailbox.

So it seems to me that the Exchange solution made for companies is aka "Exchange ActiveSync"...? My previous employer used that but it seems to me that there is noting for consumers / private people? But what is server address = m.outlook.com described in the article!? Strange ...

Maybe someone bring a bit light to that confusion I have at the moment? ;-)

Edit_2010-10-25_06:45pm : OK, it is the normal "Exchange" stuff made for companies who running Microsft Exchange ...

I am looking for such stuff like "Outlook Connector" for WM5 ;)

  • Sorry for the (silly) question: What is "Windows Wave"? Is it just the name of the UI (like Aero for Windows Vista, 7) or is it an own product?

It looks like the live.com pages which are optimized for mobile devices (also missed calendar there for a long time).

    See also: http://liveside.net/2010/01/11/windows-live-for-mobile-wave-4-calendar-and-groups-coming-soon

Since this is more than 9 month old can I assume that "Windows Wave 4" comes with calendar support now? Of course this seems not to be the solution for syning calendar, tasks, contacts over the air (without Outlook) ... ;-)

  • Windows Live "Wave" x refers to a major release level for programs and services. The most recent upgrade is Wave 4 and includes upgrades to online services such as Hotmail and the client applications in Windows Live Essentials.

I am not well versed in the world of mobile support. However, I think your first issue is that you are running WM5, which is fairly old in the world of mobil. There is a client application for synchronizing Windows Live data to your phone, but it is supported on WM6.x

And, of course, there's Windows Phone, out now in many parts of the world and in the US in a few weeks.

It appears that it should work since it was released recently for all Hotmail users, but it is possible that not all accounts have it available yet. Settings:

    Email: yourmail@live.com or yourmail@hotmail.com
    Server Address: m.hotmail.com
    SSL: Enabled
    Username: yourmail@live.com
    Password: password
    Domain: (Leave it Blank)

In any event, head over to the Hotmail forum at windowslivehelp for more assistance.
