Mapping Network Drives

    שאלה

  • Hello,

I am trying to map network drives over the internet so I can connect to my WHS 2011 drives and use them as a local drive. I have one drive mapped within LAN, but I want the same access when I am away. I know I can login and see the server folders but I want something simple (similiar to Cisco VPN), where I can see the drive under "computer" as a network drive. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hamachi also worked well with WHS 2011 when I was testing it.  I was running version 1.0.3.0 as a service.  I briefly tested version 2 which worked fine also, but since I am a long time user, I prefer the look and feel of version 1.  Version 2 has some additional features and an updated GUI.  The older version can be found at

Version 1.0.3.0 was the last of the version 1 series and is very stable and bug free.

Yeah, I do not want it to be open for everybody. I will have to see what type of VPN can work with WHS11 or if WHS11 can be configured to as a VPN with a simple login to access the mapped network drive.

No idea how well it would work with WHS 2011 but I know that a lot of

  • Mapped Drive is going to require some kind of transport that supports SMB or some other file system protocol that you can map. That's not happening over the ports MS exposes via remote access. Imagine the security implications of WHS opening up your share to the Internet the same as the LAN.

You ought to research VPN and WHS11. That's probably a better fit to what you are asking.

  • Yeah, I do not want it to be open for everybody. I will have to see what type of VPN can work with WHS11 or if WHS11 can be configured to as a VPN with a simple login to access the mapped network drive.

  • You can configure WebDAV (i.e. it's supported in the base OS, though not in Windows Home Server, of course).

I don't recommend it, for security reasons.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
