Cannot connect the computer to the server beacuse another software installation is in progress

    Kérdés

  • I am running a WHS2011 with 3 PCs connected to it, all on Windows 7. I have been trying to connect a 4th PC on Windows 7, which sits on the same network as the rest and with similar if not same configuration. I am however stopped from installing the Connector by a persistent errror message that reads; "Cannot connect the computer to the server because either another software installation is in progress, or the computer has a restart pending".

Does anyone know how to resolve this error?

    Thanks,

  • Just a note--I had the same issue on one computer, and followed the instructions Phil copied above. I had no "PendingFileRenameOperations" key. However I did have a FileRenameOperations key (minus the "Pending.") I changed that, per the instructions, and then the computer connected just fine.

I also noticed that in the original thread about this, blame was traced to a previous install of Logitech Webcam software. No such software was installed on my computer--although we did install Microsoft LifeCam software, for whatever that's worth.

  • Did you try searching this forum before asking the question as this has been covered many times before?

To work around the pending reboot issue:
    1. Open Regedit
    2. Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager"
    3. Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to "PendingFileRenameOperations2"

  • Thanks Saul, Phil.

I encountered the same issue - no "PendingFileRenameOperations" key. I did as you did and changed the FileRenameOperations key to FileRenameOperations2, and kazam it worked beautifully.

  • Having the same issue on 2 of 5 computers at home.  One is new computer on Windows 7... other is older that was restored to original XP.

Is there anything that can bypass this installation error and force it?

I've been having this error since the original WHS.

  • As further help, on another forum someone posted the same problem. The motherboard came with  Intel Smart Connect software, this had to be deleted before the connector would install, or it gave the above error message.
