I have a windows vista home premium. Bubble said there was updates for my computer and i ignored for a while then finally installed and when I restarted my computer I logged in and a black screen came up and a bubble saying:
Windows Activation
An unauthorized change was made to Windows
Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited Windows functionality. Use the link below to find out how to fix Windows.
Then it gives me 2 buttons to choose from: "learn more online button" and a "close" button
Then when I click the "Learn more online button another bubble pops up and says:
Windows Activation
An unauthorized change was made to Windows
You will no longer receive notifications, including those about your license or activation. Use the link below to find out how to fix your system.
Then there is a button "Learn more online"
And in the details it says:
Error: 0xC004D401
Description:
The security processor reported a system file mismatch error.
Also I had been running McAfee virus protection on my laptop for several years and recently downloaded and installed bitdefender total security 2012...not sure if bitdefender is to blame???
This happened months ago and I couldn't figure out how to fix it and then just put laptop in the corner and have been using my desktop but now I need my laptop for work ASAP.
Please help me fix this!!! Please!

Yep - it's almost certainly a compatibility problem with your Anti-Virus.
In my previous post -

Once you install Service pack 2 you can reinstall BitDefender with no problem.

I went to update my drivers and install SP2 and not all updates will install it says "Error(s) found: Code 80070490 Windows update encountered an unknown error"
Also while following the instructions on http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Learn-how-to-install-Windows-Vista-Service-Pack-2-SP2 which is Carey Frisch's link to install SP2 it says: "Click View available updates. In the list of updates, select Service Pack forMicrosoft Windows (KB948465), and then click Install.
If
you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation." I checked for updates but Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465) was not there in the available updates...Also I checked by clicking start, then right click computer and then properties and I have SP1 listed under editions

Sorry - I seem to have missed your earlier response somehow. The 0x80070490 error you got may be solved by following the advice here.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044 (try the Fixit first, then the CheckSUR Tool).

There is no SP3 for Vista :) (only for XP)
When you installed the CHeckSUR tool - did it complete, or did it give an error message?
either way, please upload the CheckSUR.log file to your Skydrive (or other favoured fileshare site), and post a link in your reply.

I have to admit to being unsure how to handle this one.
All the errors in the report relate to a single Update - KB951066 - which is an update for Windows Mail.
Is this update in your list of Installed updates?
The update forms part of the SP2 install, and it's possible that the problem arises because related registry keys are corrupted.
Are you using any add-ons for WinMail? (things like Incredimail)
(I'm going to have to create a virtual machine to see what I can find that may help - it may take a while)

did not see this in a list of installed updates nor did i see it in the list of updates that need to be installed......as far as mail goes I have only ever used mail from free sites like yahoo and gmail, not outlook or anything like that.
What should I do from here?
Since uninstalling Bitdefender Total Security 2012 my computer works normally, but I have not been connecting to the internet because I want to avoid getting a virus (or more of a virus/es). I can connect to the internet and the internet works fine on the computer....all I am worried about is if I reinstall bitdefender and the computer shuts down to the black screen again.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

I'd given you up for lost! :)
(possibly covering things a second time - forgive me if so)
Have you not installed an alternative 'pure' AV such as MSE?
Have you 'cleaned' the system after uninstalling Bitdefender, by using the dedicated removal utility? http://www.bitdefender.com/support/How-to-uninstall-BitDefender-333.html
I'll ask a friend to have a look and see if he can suggest a repair method.

Hello :)
I am going to try to repair those errors, and hopefully Windows Update will work after that. Unfortunately, those are hard errors to solve, and I will probably only give you a 50% chance of success. But we shall see. Please back up any important data first, just in case something goes wrong.
First, please press and hold the Windows Key, and then press R to open the Run dialogue > type regedit > OK > File > Export > Selected Branch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
Please then give it a sensible, but short, file name, and save it somewhere safe. After that please open up a copy of notepad, paste in the following code exactly, File > Save as > "fix.reg" in a location you can easily find > Drop down "Save as type": "All files (*.*)" > Save.
Now go and find that saved file, double click on it, and import into the registry. It may not accept it. If it doesn't, I will import it a different way. Please let me know of any error messages at this stage.
After that, please let me know if the problems persist. If they do, please re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, and copy a new CheckSUR.log here.
Thanks a lot.

Hello again :)
I am very sorry that I didn't explain this more fully, as this is a good question.
You should press and hold the Windows Key, and then press R to open the Run dialogue.
In the Run dialogue, type just: regedit
Click the OK button.
A new window should open. In the Top-Left hand corner, open the File menu.
From the File menu, click on Export.
A new window should open. Towards the bottom of this window, put the dot in the circle next to "Selected Branch".
In the text box just below this, copy and paste in the following line exactly: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
In the "File Name" text box, give the file a sensible name, such as CBS_Reg_Backup
Click Save.
After that, you may close regedit via the normal red X.
If you need further explanation at any point, please do not hesitate to ask.

Richard,
I clicked on both files (the "fix.reg" and the "CBS") and both files gave me the same warning sign:
"Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause components to stop working correctly. If you do not trust the source of this information in ___ (where file is saved), do not add it to the registry.
Are you sure you want to continue?"
Is this popup normal? Don't want to screw up my computer anymore than it already is?
Also when you said: "Now go and find that saved file, double click on it, and import into the registry. It may not accept it. If it doesn't, I will import it a different way. Please let me know of any error messages at this stage."
The file you are talking about is the "fix.reg" file right? Have not opened it up yet so not sure, it may be as simple to import as clicking a button, but in case its not could you tell me how to import ___ file into the registry.
Thanks
-
23 Juli 2012 13:51Moderator
Yes, it's normal in the case of the 'fix.reg' file.
What 'CBS' file are you talking about? if it's one created by export from Regedit, then that too would be normal.

There was an error message when I tried to open the "fix.reg" file. It says:

Try the fix.reg file again, this time after booting to Safe Mode.
I suspect that the parts of the registry you need to change are locked by one of hte services, and it's easier to boot to Safe Mode, than work out exactly which service is blocking it.
To boot to Safe Mode, restart the machine, and as soo and you get to teh black screen start tapping the F8 Key about 2x per second. This should bring up the advanced boot menu - pick Safe Mode, and log in as normal then follow the same instructions.

Hi - I thought you'd joined Richard and dropped off the edge of the planet :)
Seriously, though, Richard is not a well man and has spent considerable time in hospital lately.
Please run a newly-downloaded copy of CheckSUR and post the results (the tool is updated occasionally, and since there's been so long since your last run it may have a new version number)
Then I'll try and take over and at least get these edits sorted out.

Please start a new thread of your own, and include an MGADiag report.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- in your own thread, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
