Answered Windows Genuine Advantage Not Working

    Hello All,

I have a system that was recently infected with a virus, after repairing the system I started to receive an error message stating that Windows needed to be verfied as genuine but whenever I tried to run Windows Genuine Advantage I received the error "We are unable to determine whether your copy of Windows is genuine at this time."

Rather than screw around with it I decided to just reformat the system so now there is a fresh installation of Windows XP Pro x86 on the system. The product key I am using is a Volume License key that I have used on various other systems and I am 100% sure that it is genuine.

Even after the fresh install I am still getting the same error which does not make sense to me. When I get the error it gives me the option to go online for help and the page it brings me to says that it is currently verifying whether my copy of windows is genuine and then about 20 seconds later it redirects me to a blank page with nothing on it. At no point during does it ever tell me that my copy of windows is not genuine, just that it cannot verify whether it is or not. I have also tried installing Windows Genuine Advantage manually and receive the same error every time.

Can anybody help me with this issue? I have installed XP on hundreds of systems before and have never had an issue like this.

Just an update.. I decided to test whether it was just the disc I was using or not using VMs and created 1 VM with the disc I used to install windows on the station above and another VM with a freshly downloaded iso from microsoft volume licensing.. Both are working no problem as expected and I am completely stumped.

I have not installed a single thing on the station (aside from wireless driver) that is having this issue, it is a totally fresh copy of windows and I have verified that both the disc used for installation was not corrupt and the product key is working using a VM. Does anybody have suggestions at all? This is driving me nuts.

After running the Diagnostic Tool I've determined that the reason Windows Genuine Advantage was not working as expected was because the date on the system was incorrect (set to Sunday).

Everything seems to be working as expected now.. Not sure when they implemented this new requirement as I've configured systems in the past with the wrong date and had no issue but it really irks me that instead of just telling me "your clock is wrong" that it completely locks me out of Windows Genuine Advantage with no indication of what's wrong.

That said, thanks for pointing out the diag tool, I would not have found the answer without it.

The requirement has always been there – activation over the internet cannot complete if the system clock is much more than an hour off.
This is due to the requirement for secure connections to the appropriate servers for validation and activation – such connections have a limited life, and if the clock on one machine is sufficiently off, then the life is ‘forfeit’ even before it’s active.
