What is Error Code 80070490, and what can I do to fix it?

I'm a new Vista user, and - although I have few issues with it - I am having problems downloading the important and recommended updates.  Every time I try to using either Windows OneCare or the Windows Update, I keep getting an error code 80070490.  As I've been trying to download the important updates since around the time I got the computer, I'm now getting nervous that there will be several updates that I am just not getting.  Right now, the updater says there are 7 such updates.  Can you please help me out?

  • I'm not sure what you mean that you get this error with OneCare, as it is a Windows Update error.

Windows Update Solution Center - http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

I did a bit of searching and found that the solution may be painful - either a System Restore to a point before the problem began or a repair or reinstall of Vista - http://www.krunk4ever.com/blog/2008/01/05/windows-update-error-80070490/

So, how does this relate to OneCare, other than the fact that OneCare sees that you are missing important and critical updates so would be in yellow or red status?

  • I am getting the same code.  I see it in Security Center when I try to use Windows Update.  I also have Windows Live OneCare installed and do think it is related somehow.  (I recently installed OneCare and I think this is what triggered the error).

What is the latest preferred solution to Error Code 80070490 ?

  • That is unexceptable!

That is a very difficult solution for a problem that so many people are having and was caused by an update to a vista component.

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for months. I tried the system restore and it did not work. The other solution of doing a fake upgrade to vista is awful.

While the solution may be difficult and I'm sorry that you have encountered the problem, you're off topic for this forum, which is dedicated to Windows Live OneCare. You may want to try the Windows Update Solution Center - http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527 - which will provide links to support for Windows Update - forums, newsgroups, and Microsoft support.

  • More often than not this is caused by a broken MSIE plug-in. The biggest culprits are the ask.com toolbar and Limewire. uninstall them and you should be fine.

  • However, MSIE plugins are not the exclusive source. In fact vista updates are the culprit. I keep MSIE pristine, turning off all in private filtering and search updates and not allowing any 3rd party toolbars at all and I was still hit by this error. I have no 3rd party burning, chat, file sharing or social networking software on this computer and I still have 15 updates that fail with 'windows update error 80070490'. This box is a simple vista home premium box with Office 2007 and not much more. It is rarely used. (sometimes it goes 3-6 months without being booted). Sometime between April 2010 and July 2010 an update caused this error. No software other than updates was installed.

The MS Update Readiness Tool fails to resolve the issue so it appears the complete reinstall is going to be the next try. Although it will probably take sending the laptop back to Toshiba as Vista home premium came preinstalled from Toshiba on the hard drive.

It does seem that Microsoft could understand its software well enough to put out a patch to resolve this problem without forcing its users through multi hour reinstalls as a 'workaround' to a CBS manifest corruption problem.
