Clean Install of Vista Home Premium - Unable to activate
Clean Install of Vista Home Premium - Unable to activate
- I have the licensed upgrade versions of windows Vista home premium, XP, 98 and 95. I have been running Vista home premium since its release.
Last weekend I was unable to boot to Vista. I was also unable to repair Vista so I had to do a custom, clean install from scratch by booting to the Vista upgrade DVD. I did not provide a validation code during the install as that caused the install software to insist I upgraded through Vista.
Over this week, my pc has downloaded all Vista updates and service packs. I have also reinstalled and set-up all my software.
Vista reminded me today that I have to activate my product but it will not accept the product key. The error code is 0xC004F061 - this product key can only be used for upgrading.
I tried to upgrade from within Vista by running my installation (upgrade) DVD and it is insisting that I perform a clean install. (another one)
Do I have to do so? Another week of updates and installations, registrations etc.

- Hello FlashmanAB,
"It is probably the service packs."
That is possible. At this point, your only options are to either reinstall the old copy of windows then install the upgrade copy of Vista, to it.
Or
Reinstall Vista without using a product key (you may need to install a lower version of Vista then the one you are going to upgrade to). Once the keyless install is done, pop in the Upgrade CD and do an Upgrade install using the Vista upgrade product key.
If you have any additional issues, I recommend posting in the Vista Answers Forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista . You will want to post your issue in the "Install, Upgrade and Activate" subforum.
Thank you,

- Hi FlashmanAB,
Using an Upgrade version of Windows requires you to have a full version of Windows (already installed) from which to Upgrade from. Normally, you would need to first install the older version of Windows to be able to use the Vista upgrade. But there is a workaround, since you now have a full (unlicensed) version of Vista installed, all you need to do now is boot into your current Vista, put the Upgrade CD back in and when prompted select " Perform an in-place upgrade".
Hope that helps,

- Hi Darin,
Windows is telling me that "Upgrade has been disabled"
the upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running.
